(LAS CRUSES, N.M.) — The New Mexico State University men’s basketball coach has been fired days after the program was suspended for the rest of the season amid an investigation into alleged hazing incidents, the school’s chancellor said.

Dan E. Arvizu, chancellor of New Mexico State University, said he decided to terminate coach Greg Heiar earlier on Tuesday, after learning of the hazing allegations involving the students on the team.

“As I’ve stated previously, hazing has no place on our campus, and those found responsible will be held accountable for their actions,” Arvizu said in a statement. “I am committed to the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community, as well as to the integrity of our university.”

The chancellor added that the school will work to “ensure that support systems are in place to prevent this from happening again.”

Arvizu said he informed the university’s director of athletics, Mario Moccia, of his decision Tuesday afternoon.

Heiar, the former Northwest Florida State coach, was hired by New Mexico State University in March 2022.

ABC News was not immediately able to reach Heiar for comment.

The decision to terminate Heiar comes two days after the chancellor announced he had suspended the men’s basketball program for the rest of the season.

“This action is clearly needed, especially after receiving additional facts and reviewing investigation reports related to the hazing allegations involving student-athletes on the team,” Arvizu said in a statement on Sunday, adding that it’s “time for this program to reset.”

The allegations surfaced Friday as the men’s basketball team was in Southern California preparing for a game against California Baptist University in Riverside, Arvizu said in a statement Saturday night. He said he immediately suspended the basketball program, canceled Saturday’s game and placed the coaching staff on paid administrative leave.

“We took this action after receiving reports of alleged hazing incidents within our men’s basketball team,” Arvizu said in his statement.

According to a New Mexico State University Police Department report, a player reported the alleged incidents on Friday, claiming they have been “hazed” by three teammates in the locker room of both home and away games for several months, usually in front of the entire team.

Arvizu said the players and coaching staff were called back to the school in Las Cruces and interviewed by university personnel specially trained to conduct investigations into hazing incidents.

“The most important job I have as Chancellor of the NMSU System is to ensure our students are safe and protected from harm,” Arvizu said. “That’s why I was so heartbroken and sickened to hear about these hazing allegations.”

Arvizu did not provide details of the incidents or say when they occurred. In his statement, Arvizu added, “hazing is a despicable act. It humiliates and degrades someone and has the potential to cause physical and emotional harm, or even death.”

“Sadly, hazing can become part of an organization’s culture left unchecked,” Arvizu said. “NMSU policy strictly prohibits hazing, in all forms, and it’s something we simply will not tolerate.”

School personnel were “recently informed of new allegations” involving the potential violations of school policy, the Las Cruces university said in a statement.

The New Mexico State University Board of Regents said in a statement that it “supports the action taken by the university leaders and is confident a full and thorough investigation will be conducted.” The board noted it was informed of the suspension Friday evening.

In a statement on the university’s website, the Board of Regents announced it will hold a closed-door meeting on Tuesday on matters that “may include discussion of personally identifiable information about individual NMSU students.”

The men’s basketball team competes in the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference.

In a statement Sunday night, WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton said: “The Western Athletic Conference is committed to both the mental and physical well-being of all of our student-athletes. We are saddened and disappointed that hazing continues to be a part of our society at any level.”

“Over the last 48 hours, our staff and membership have been working to find a solution that best protects every WAC student-athlete and institution,” Thornton said. “We fully support New Mexico State’s decision to suspend the rest of its season, as they take this time to focus on the health and safety of their student-athletes.”

The allegations are unrelated to a fatal shooting involving one of the men’s basketball team players that occurred in Albuquerque late last year, the school said.

On Nov. 19, forward Mike Peake was allegedly involved in a pre-dawn shootout on the University of New Mexico’s campus while in Albuquerque for a game against the school, New Mexico State University officials said.

Brandon Travis, 19, and three other University of New Mexico students allegedly lured Peake to the campus to assault him, New Mexico State Police said.

Travis allegedly confronted and shot Peake, 21, who returned gunfire, police said. Travis was pronounced dead at the scene, and Peake was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and conspiracy in connection to the shooting, and no additional arrests have been announced. The incident remains under investigation by state police.

That weekend’s Albuquerque game and a Dec. 3 rematch in Las Cruces were canceled, and Peake was suspended from the team.

In December, New Mexico State University announced it will launch an independent investigation into the events and university response involving the shooting.

ABC News

(ANAHEIM, Calif.) — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke with ABC News’ Good Morning America from the happiest place on Earth and described the final nail-biting minutes before a game-winning field goal that clinched Sunday night’s Super Bowl victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Oh man, dude, that’s like the most nervous feeling of all time. I mean, we have a great kicker. But in those moments, you just never know,” Mahomes told GMA from Disneyland, a post-Super Bowl winner’s tradition, where he is celebrating with his family.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl win in four years, beating the Eagles 38-35 in a comeback victory Sunday night in Glendale, Arizona.

“You’re just holding on for those eight seconds until the game’s over and then after that, it’s just celebration,” Mahomes, who also won his second Super Bowl MVP on Sunday, said. “And you just run, hug your teammates, hug your family members because all your hard work paid off.”

The 27-year-old father of two was immediately joined on the field by his wife Brittany Mahomes and their soon-to-be 2-year-old daughter Sterling Skye.

The couple’s son, Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, who was born last November, did not join the family for the on-field party, but is in attendance for the Disneyland celebrations.

Mahomes is the 13th quarterback in NFL history to win more than one Super Bowl. His first Super Bowl win came in 2020 after beating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV.

(NEW YORK) — After leading the Kansas City Chiefs to their second Super Bowl win in four years, Patrick Mahomes enjoyed a candid celebratory moment with his wife and daughter on the confetti-covered field.

The Super Bowl MVP quarterback and his wife Brittany Mahomes both kissed the cheek of their soon-to-be 2-year-old daughter Sterling Skye in the first of five photos from the festivities Brittany Mahomes posted on Instagram.

Alongside a carousel of photos of Patrick Mahomes holding and hugging his daughter, his wife wrote, “Super Bowl CHAMPS” and a red heart emoji.

Their family was only missing its newest addition, Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, who was born last November.

Mahomes added to his already storied legacy Sunday night, becoming the 13th quarterback in NFL history to win more than one Super Bowl; his first came in 2020 with a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

The 27-year-old played through an aggravated right high ankle sprain and still managed to go 21 of 27 for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

“I had to learn to be a better leader,” Mahomes said Sunday night after the win. “I had to learn how to stay on guys, how not to let the little stuff slide. I had to teach guys the culture we have here, that I learned from Alex Smith and Derrick Johnson.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid hailed Mahomes as the reason the team and players rallied in the second half to pull out a comeback win.

“He wants to be the greatest player ever,” Reid said Sunday night. “And he does it humbly. He does the work. And then when it’s time for the players around him to raise their game, he helps them do that.”

Why Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton said winning in front of his mom was ‘a dream come true’

ABC News

(NEW YORK) — Super Bowl 57 was a dream come true for Kansas City Chiefs star linebacker Nick Bolton, who said he envisioned himself in the end zone just days prior.

That dream came true during the second quarter, when Bolton came up with one of the biggest plays of the night to change the momentum in Kansas City’s favor.

The second-year lineman scooped up a fumble by Jalen Hurts, then ran 36 yards for a defensive touchdown to tie the game at 14-14.

“I dreamed about it and it came to fruition when that play happened. It’s kind of surreal,” Bolton told ABC News’ Good Morning America hours after the Chiefs’ 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. “I came to the sidelines and I couldn’t enjoy the moment because I felt like I was living through a dream again. It was a great play for our team, we needed it and we found a way to win.”

Bolton, who led the team in tackles, said the post-win feeling was “still surreal” and has been soaking it in with his teammates and family.

“I haven’t gone to sleep. We’re up and happy to be here,” he said.

Down 24-14 at the half, Bolton said the team refocused in the locker room.

“We understood we just got to keep being us, but do it better in terms of penalties or getting off the field on third down and longs,” he explained. “We had to find a way in the second half to keep coming back in the box on third down and long and keep the ball to the outside and just run the tackle out in space.”

The 22-year-old said it was “huge” to have his mom there for his first NFL championship, “especially because I didn’t have the opportunity to have her at the game when I played my state championship in Texas in high school. She had to be at home and she didn’t want to travel because of her health issues. Having her come to a game of this magnitude, and happening the way it did, it’s a dream come true.”

He joked, adding, “She’ll probably end up getting that [ring] and holding onto that one for awhile for me.”

As for what’s next, Bolton said the team will get back to Kansas City for the victory parade Wednesday.

Kansas City Chiefs players welcome babies before and after Super Bowl

(NEW YORK) — Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Nick Allegretti had an “unbelievable” Sunday and it wasn’t just because the Chiefs emerged victorious over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

Nick’s wife, Christina Allegretti, gave birth to the couple’s twins early Sunday morning, according to a locker room interview clip shared by a Chiefs Digest writer.

Allegretti told Chiefs Digest that Feb. 12 would be a memorable one for him.

“It’s the best day of my life no matter what – 3:30, 4 a.m. – I became a dad, father of two daughters. Unbelievable. And now, I’ve got a ring for both of them. Incredible, cannot believe it,” the 26-year-old said.

Allegretti joined the Chiefs in 2019 and won his first Super Bowl ring when the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 during Super Bowl LIV in 2020. The Chiefs’ 38-35 win against the Eagles gives Allegretti his second Super Bowl ring, hence the two coveted rings for each of his newborn twin girls.

Allegretti wasn’t the only Chiefs player on baby watch over the weekend. Teammate Mecole Hardman Jr. also tweeted on Sunday that his girlfriend, Chariah Gordon, had gone into labor.

“OMG HER WATER BROKE,” the wide receiver wrote, adding three eye emojis.

On Monday morning, the 24-year-old tweeted again, writing, “He’s HERE !!!!!!”

New Mexico State men’s basketball program suspended after alleged hazing incident

(LAS CRUCES, N.M.) — The New Mexico State University men’s basketball program has been suspended indefinitely amid an investigation into alleged hazing incidents the school’s chancellor said left him “heartbroken and sickened.”

The allegations surfaced Friday as the men’s basketball team was in Southern California preparing for a game against California Baptist University in Riverside, Dan E. Arvizu, chancellor of New Mexico State University said in a statement Saturday night. He said he immediately suspended the basketball program, canceled Saturday’s game and placed the coaching staff on paid administrative leave.

“We took this action after receiving reports of alleged hazing incidents within our men’s basketball team,” Arvizu said in his statement.

Arvizu said the players and coaching staff were called back to the school in Las Cruces and interviewed by university personnel specially trained to conduct investigations into hazing incidents.

“Sadly, hazing can become part of an organization’s culture left unchecked,” Arvizu said. “NMSU policy strictly prohibits hazing, in all forms, and it’s something we simply will not tolerate.”

Arvizu said the men’s basketball program will remain suspended “until further notice.”

The men’s basketball team competes in the Western Athletic Conference. In a statement to ESPN, the NCAA Division I conference said it is “continuing to monitor the situation at New Mexico State and at this time has no additional comment.”

Wheelchair Football League gives disabled athletes new field of possibilities

Wheelchair Football League gives disabled athletes new field of possibilities
Wheelchair Football League gives disabled athletes new field of possibilities
ABC News

(PHOENIX) — Before fans flocked to Phoenix for this weekend’s Super Bowl, the city hosted another major football championship event featuring a different group of hard-hitting players.

The Wheelchair Football League held its second Super Bowl on Tuesday with a match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams.

The league, which was created by the NFL, the Bob Woodruff Foundation and Move United, is made up of athletes with disabilities who compete in wheelchairs, complete with uniforms and helmets of NFL teams.

Many of the players are veterans who were wounded abroad, and for some, like Alex Nguyen, a wide receiver and defensive back for the WFL’s Chiefs, the league has given them a new meaning in life.

“I guess finding sports kind of just turned it around a little bit for me,” Nguyen, who lost his leg while serving in Afghanistan, told ABC News. “Everybody’s got that fire that an able-bodied football player does.”

The league was founded in 2020 and now has 400 athletes in 11 teams across the country. Passes, receptions and throws take place on a 60-yard hard ground, in some cases a parking lot, and tackling is done by touching the upper part of the body.

Bart Salgado, a former Marine who plays for the WFL’s LA Rams, told ABC News there are plenty of times players crash into the pavement.

“Some guys can just get themselves back up. Some guys need a little bit of help,” he said.

The league’s fanbase has been growing throughout the years, according to Anne Marie Dougherty, the CEO of the Bob Woodruff Foundation.

“I saw the championship game last year, [and] I was like, ‘Wow those are some hard hits! OK!’ We’re here for it, those are some great throws,” she said.

Cam Jordan, a defensive end for the New Orleans Saints who attended this week’s championship game, agreed.

“These guys out here smashing into each other with reckless abandon. And I love the mentality,” he told ABC News.

One of the best parts of the league, according to the players, is the new community they’ve grown and the camaraderie they’ve created.

Even though the Chiefs defeated the Rams in the game 7-0, players on both teams said they were ready to celebrate with some post-game drinks.

“Yeah during the game. We might hate each other a little bit,” Nguyen said.

“But it’s just trash-talking and sportsmanship,” Salgado added.
