(TACOMA, Wash.) — Former Seattle Supersonics star and NBA great Shawn Kemp has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a drive-by shooting at a mall, police say.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:58 p.m. Wednesday when officers from the Tacoma Police Department in Washington responded to reports of shots being fired in the parking lot of the Tacoma Mall, the largest shopping center in the city.
“Responding officers determined an altercation had occurred between two parties in vehicles,” said the Tacoma Police Department in a statement following the incident. “One of the drivers fired off several rounds at the occupants of the other vehicle.”
A short time later, officers say they were able to locate the suspect who had fired shots at the driver of the other car and arrest the 53-year-old suspect without incident. Authorities also confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the scene.
Online arrest records for Pierce County Corrections show that Kemp, 53, was booked on a felony drive-by-shooting charge at 5:58 p.m. — four hours after the incident took place at the Tacoma Mall.
Kemp, a six-time NBA all-star who led the Seattle Supersonics to the 1996 NBA Finals, was denied bail and is set to be arraigned on Thursday, according to ABC News’ Seattle affiliate KOMO-TV.
The motives behind the alleged shooting are currently unclear.
Kemp — nicknamed “Reign Man” — played 14 seasons in the NBA, including eight with the Seattle SuperSonics who selected him 17th overall in the 1989 draft, as well as stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trailblazers and the Orlando Magic before dropping out of the league following the conclusion on the 2003 NBA season.
In 2020, Kemp opened a cannabis shop in the Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood and just last month he opened a second location in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood, according to KOMO.
The investigation into the shooting is currently ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.

In a post made to the Orlando Pride Instagram account, players Ally Watt and Haley McCutcheon pose in the team’s new dark shorts. — @orlpride/Instagram
(ORLANDO, Fla.) — This season, players for the Orlando Pride, part of the National Women’s Soccer League, will take the field in black shorts instead of white.
The reason, according to the team, is so that players feel “more comfortable and confident” when they are playing in a game while on their period.
The team says it is the first in the NWSL to make a change to its uniform after listening to players’ concerns about being uncomfortable wearing white while menstruating and competing.
“The reasons behind not wanting to wear white shorts are clear, but it is unfortunately something that hasn’t been addressed until recently,” Orlando Pride midfielder Erika Tymrak said in a statement shared by the team. “I think it’s a big step for us as a Club to make players feel comfortable and allow us to focus solely on competing.”
The team will debut its new look on March 26, when they take on the Portland Thorns in their first game of the 2023 season.
The Pride, which announced its uniform change this week on social media, said its players will be able to wear dark shorts in practices as well as games.
“We must remove the stigma involved in discussing the health issues impacting women and menstruating non-binary and trans athletes if we want to maximize performance and increase accessibility to sport,” Haley Carter, Orlando Pride’s vice president of soccer operations and general manager, said in a statement. “I am proud to be part of a Club that is making a small but extremely impactful change when it comes to both our professional and youth players.”
The Orlando Pride is one of 12 teams in the NWSL, which was founded in 2012.
The Pride’s shift on its uniforms is the latest in a growing movement to destigmatize menstruation and increase accessibility to menstrual care.
The U.S. Women’s National Team, on which many NWSL players compete, has in recent years spoken openly about using period tracking to help the team compete at the highest level.
In 2019, Dawn Scott, at the time the high performance coach for both the USWNT and NWSL, credited the breakthrough use of period tracking — knowing the time of your menstrual cycle as well as the symptoms — as one of the strategies the USWNT used to win its fourth World Cup title.
While competing at the 2019 World Cup in France, the USWNT used a period tracking app and had players fuel and train according to which phase of their menstrual cycle they were in, according to Scott.
Women, on average, get a period for about 40 years of their life and lose about 2 to 3 tablespoons of blood during each menstrual cycle, according to the U.S. Office on Women’s Health.
Across the globe, including in the United States, many people experience period poverty, when they cannot afford even the most basic of period supplies like pads and tampons, which can keep them from jobs and school, period rights advocates say.
Last school year, California started requiring its public schools and colleges to offer free menstrual products in restrooms.
The state law was inspired by similar legislation in Scotland, which in 2020 became the first country in the world to provide period products to all women for free.
(ATHENS, Ga.) — University of Georgia football player Jalen Carter, a projected top pick in the NFL draft, has surrendered to police on charges of reckless driving and racing tied to a crash that killed a player and staff member in January, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
An investigation found that Chandler LeCroy, a member of the team’s recruiting staff, and Carter were racing shortly after leaving downtown Athens and that alcohol impairment, racing, reckless driving and speed were contributing factors to the crash that killed LeCroy and Devin Willock, an offensive lineman, hours after celebrating UGA’s championship win.
Carter was booked into jail at 11:33 p.m. Wednesday and was released on his own recognizance shortly after at 11:49 p.m., according to jail records. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance April 18.
In his first statement since the charges were announced, Carter said in a statement, “It is my intention to return to Athens to answer the misdemeanor charges against me and to make certain that the complete and accurate truth is presented. There is no question in my mind that when all of the facts are known that I will be fully exonerated of any criminal wrongdoing.”
Carter is the No. 1 overall prospect in this year’s draft, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. He is not participating in the workout portion of this week’s NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis but was scheduled to conduct interviews with teams, undergo a physical and was scheduled to address reporters Wednesday.
LeCroy, who was driving a 2021 Ford Expedition at the time of the crash, had a blood alcohol concentration of .197, according to police. The Expedition was driving at 104 mph just before the fatal crash, police said.
“The evidence demonstrated that both vehicles switched between lanes, drove in the center turn lane, drove in opposite lanes of travel, overtook other motorists, and drove at high rates of speed, in an apparent attempt to outdistance each other,” Athens-Clarke County Police Department said in a press release.
Willock, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. LeCroy, 24, was transported to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to Athens police.
“The charges announced today are deeply concerning, especially as we are still struggling to cope with the devastating loss of two beloved members of our community,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Wednesday. “We will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities while supporting these families and assessing what we can learn from this horrible tragedy.”
Body camera footage obtained by ABC News shows Carter was also pulled over for speeding, driving nearly 90 mph in a 45 mph zone, on Sept. 22, 2022.
The Athens-Clarke County police officer told Carter he had recently pulled over two of his teammates for speeding, including one “just a minute ago.”
“You guys need to slow down, dude,” the officer is heard saying in the footage.
“Your break is you’re not going to jail,” he later told Carter. “Because that would make all kinds of news, right?”
Carter, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, has been a top defensive lineman for several years. He was a key part of the defense that led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships.
The 21-year-old from Apopka, Florida, had six sacks and two forced fumbles in his three years with Georgia.
Nolan Smith, a linebacker for Georgia, spoke about losing Willock Wednesday morning at the combine prior to the news breaking about Carter’s involvement.
“No one should deserve to die like that,” Smith, also a top prospect, told reporters. “This is my first time talking about it. … Those are my brothers … it’s more than a game.”
(NEW YORK) — It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Mia Brookes making history at the Snowboarding Freestyle World Championships!
The 16-year-old freestyle snowboarder became the youngest ever snowboarding world champion in Bakuriani on Monday.
But that’s not all. In order to clinch the gold medal spot, Brookes, who is British, delivered a history-making second run and executed the first-ever cab 1440 double grab — four full frontside rotations while grabbing the board — completed in a women’s snowboarding competition.
“I’m just really, really happy — like, I’ve never been so happy in my life. I feel like I’m going to cry!” Brookes said after completing the highly difficult slopestyle trick. “I actually can’t believe [I did the cab 1440]. When I did it, I wasn’t sure I’d managed it, but I thought about it and was like … yep, I’ve done a 14!”
Brookes earned a winning score of 91.38 on her final run, beating New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who won the gold medal in women’s slopestyle and the silver in big air at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Brookes, who was too young to compete in Beijing, has only participated in three World Cup events prior to winning this year’s world championships.
GB Snowsport head coach Pat Sharples praised the young boarder’s immense talent.
“What Mia’s done out here today is just next level,” Sharples told the press after the competition. “We all know Mia’s got the talent, but this is her first season on the WC circuit and her first World championships so to land a run like that with all the pressure of a World Championships tells you everything you need to know about her.”
