That’s where my love for music began—in a children’s hospital.”

“I was fortunate and only have minimal lasting effects. But so many children aren’t as lucky,” he adds.

If you enter before Aug. 15, you’ll also get a chance to win an Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50s guitar.

You can register for the sweepstakes at donfelder.com/contests. You’ll receive one entry for every $50 you donate to St. Jude.

Amusement / Island Records

Chappell Roan has already had quite the ride with “The Subway,” her new song out now.

The singer reflects on the journey in an Instagram post Friday, writing, “I’m very proud of this song & what a journey she has been on.”

“I first played it at gov ball when I was painted green as lady liberty and in the past have played new songs live to feel them out,” she continues. “Obviously not knowing this really chaotic year would follow the performance, it didn’t really leave me the time to build the world the song deserved. But finally we are here.”

Chappell adds that she “def ripped my hair out trying to figure out the puzzle of how this song should feel musically and visually and emotionally,” but that it “was worth it to make sure everything was absolutely right.”

And speaking of “ripping her hair out,” Chappell also released the music video for the song, where she sports Rapunzel-length red hair. The visual has her haunted by a green-haired girl who got away as she moves through various New York City scenes.

Creed frontman Scott Stapp has premiered the video for his solo song “Deadman’s Trigger.”

The nine-minute clip, described as a short film, takes place in the Old West and stars Stapp as a priest pulled back into a world of violence. It also co-stars Stapp’s son Anthony Stapp.

“Adapting Scott’s storyline for the screen was easy because he is a narrative songwriter – the arc is already there,” says director Tyler Dunning Evans. “As a collaborator, he’s clear on his vision and values other creators’ expertise. With Anthony on-set and [Stapp’s daughter] Milan working behind the scenes, Scott was hands-on in establishing safety measures and his love for his kids translated to a vulnerable but fierce performance in the final cut.”

You can watch the “Deadman’s Trigger” video on YouTube.

“Deadman’s Trigger” appears on Stapp’s latest solo album, 2024’s Higher Power.

Stapp is currently on tour with the reunited Creed.

On This Day, Aug. 1, 1942: Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia is born

On This Day, Aug. 1, 1942…

Jerome John “Jerry” Garcia was born in San Francisco, California.

Co-founder of the legendary rock band the Grateful Dead, Garcia was the principal songwriter, lead guitarist and a vocalist for the group, and for many he was their de facto leader.

The Grateful Dead came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s, and went on to become one of the most beloved rock bands, especially among fans who would follow them across the country.

The Dead only had one Top 40 single throughout their career, 1987’s “Touch of Grey.” But their touring success was immeasurable, and they were one of the highest-grossing touring acts for decades. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Garcia struggled with diabetes later in life, and also struggled with addiction. He passed away from a heart attack on Aug. 9, 1955, at the age of 53.

This weekend, the Grateful Dead’s 60-year legacy will be celebrated in San Francisco, the city where they were formed. Dead & Company, which features founding members of The Dead Bobby Weir and Mickey Hart, are headlining three nights at the city’s Golden Gate Park, Aug. 1, 2 and 3.

Hayley Williams officially releases group of 17 solo songs

Post Atlantic

After uploading, and then removing, 17 solo songs on her website, Hayley Williams has now officially released every track on streaming platforms.

Instead of bundling them together as an album, the Paramore frontwoman put out each song as a separate, individual single.

The songs were initially locked behind a code sent out by Williams’ hair dye company, Good Dye Young. As Good Dye Young had just announced a new shade, Ego, that became the de facto name of the collection for fans.

Williams released her debut solo album, Petals for Armor, in 2020, and followed that with 2021’s Flowers for Vases/Descansos. Her planned debut solo tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though in late 2024 she teased possibly playing makeup dates in 2025.

Rhino Records

One of Madonna’s classic hits is all dressed up for its 40th anniversary.

“Dress You Up” was the final single to be released from Madonna’s album Like a Virgin: It dropped on July 31, 1985. Now, it’s been rereleased as part of a three-song digital single: It includes the “Dress You Up” remix/edit, a “12-inch Formal Mix” and a “Casual Instrumental Mix.”

Madonna has dedicated this release of “Dress You Up” to Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, a couple who worked with Mattel designing custom Barbie dolls, including several Madonna ones. Tragically, the two died in a head-on collision on an Italian highway on July 27.

A press release reads, “Thank you for dressing up so many of your creations in Madonna iconic looks over the years.”  The official Barbie Instagram account wrote, “Their spirit and love for the brand turned every creation they touched into a masterpiece.”

Madonna is currently at work at what she’s hinted will be a sequel to her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Demi Lovato launches new dance-pop era with ‘Fast’

Daniel Sachon

Demi Lovato is going full speed into her new era.

The singer released her new dance-pop song “Fast” on Friday, along with a music video. It’s the first taste of Demi’s upcoming ninth studio album, which will be her first project since her foray into rock and punk-pop with 2022’s Holy Fvck.

In the video, Demi struts down a dark and busy city street as she sings over a pulsating dance beat, “I wanna go fast/ I wanna hard/ I wanna anywhere, anywhere you are.” The further she walks, the more wild the scene becomes, with burning cars, clowns and people running around in their underwear — but Demi remains unfazed.

Her husband Jordan Lutes, who she married on May 25, was a supportive husband, posting a clip of the video on his Instagram Story and writing, “video of the year song of the year obsessed with u so proud of u @ddlovato.” Demi reposted it on her own Story.

Demi’s ninth album is expected later this year.

The dancing duet partner who tops Thomas Rhett’s list

Thomas Rhett just sold out Boston’s Fenway Park with Teddy Swims, who also duets with him on a version of “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Woman.”

In the past, TR’s also collaborated with Katy Perry, Riley Green and Jon Pardi. But the country star is still dreaming of another bucket list duet partner.

“I would say out of this genre, Bruno Mars has kinda always been my one,” TR reveals. “You know, we just gotta like hang out one time and write a song, and I feel like something could happen. But yeah, Bruno would be a lot of fun to duet with.”

It turns out TR’s also a little envious of Bruno’s fancy footwork.

“If I could just get a little bit of his swagger, like even just a third, and be able to dance similarly, you know, I feel like we could record something really neat,” he says.

Thomas Rhett’s still doing just fine on his own, however, as “After All the Bars Are Closed” is top five and climbing at country radio.

No, Jessie Murph doesn’t have a mansion in Malibu — yet

No, Jessie Murph doesn’t have a mansion in Malibu — yet
Columbia

Jessie Murph‘s music may be inspired by her real life and experiences, but that doesn’t mean everything she sings is true. For example, despite what she says in her hit “Blue Strips,” she didn’t, in fact, just buy “a mansion in Malibu.”

“Not yet,” she tells the Los Angeles Times. “That line was just the first thing that came out of my mouth when I was writing the song. It feels so glittery, the thought of living in Malibu. It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do.”

Asked how she learned about Malibu growing up in a small town in Alabama, she says, “I’m a really big fan of Property Brothers — I’m sure I saw it on there.”

In the interview, Jessie also addresses the backlash she’s received for “1965,” a tongue-in-cheek song in which she sings about wanting to be wooed in the way they did it back in the day. The backlash came from the line “I might get a little slap-slap” and from the extremely NSFW video, which has domestic violence overtones. Fans interpreted it as Jessie advocating the oppression of women by men, similar to the criticism Sabrina Carpenter got for her album cover.

Jessie posted a TikTok in response, writing, “This entire song is satire r yall stupid.” Regarding the criticism, she tells the paper, “The weirdest part about it is that it’s a lot of women who are hating. But I think some people are weirded out by my age.”

Jessie, who’s 20, continues, “A lot of people met me when I was 16 or 17 and a much different person — which, thank God I’m a different person. I don’t know. When people find you at a certain age, it’s like you need to be frozen in time. Let me live.”
