Go-Go’s drummer Gina Schock releasing new photo book, ‘Made in Hollywood,’ charting band’s 40-year journey

Black Dog & Leventhal

A new book featuring candid photos taken by Go-Go’s drummer Gina Schock during her 40-year music career will be published on October 26, just days before the band is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In Made in Hollywood: All Access with the Go-Go’s, Schock takes fans through a photographic journey through the all-female groups history, using a treasure trove of personal pics, as well as images of posters, memorabilia and more from the band’s archives.

The book also features essays from all five Go-Go’s members — Gina, singer Belinda Carlisle, guitarist Jane Wiedlin, guitarist/keyboardist Charlotte Caffey and bassist Kathy Valentine — as well as from such famous fans as The B-52sKate Pierson, Jodie Foster, EurythmicsDave Stewart, MTV VJ Martha Quinn, and Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens.

“I truly had no idea that I was to become the Go-Go’s archivist,” Schock notes. “I’ve always loved photography, so taking photos of the band was a natural process. When you check out this book, I hope you feel like you were right there with me over the last forty years. From Baltimore to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, what a trip this has been.”

Made in Hollywood also features a foreword penned by Valentine, who notes that as the Go-Go’s drummer, Schock “gives the songs identifiable hooks — instantly recognizable, the heartbeat and life-force of a track.”

You can pre-order the book now by visiting BlackDogandLeventhal.com.

The Go-Go’s will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on October 30 in Cleveland, along with Todd Rundgren, Carole King, Tina Turner, Foo Fighters, JAY-Z and others.

The band also has lined up a series of West Coast concerts in late December 2021 and early January 2022.

Missy Elliott rocks purple hair in tribute to her idol, Prince

Josh Brasted/FilmMagic

Missy Elliott remembered her idol Prince this week with purple hair as she listened to one of her favorite songs by the legendary Minneapolis artist.

The two icons shared the same favorite color, purple, so Missy wore purple tresses in a short Instagram video to the opening line of Prince’s sultry ballad, “Adore.”

“Until the end of time I’ll be there for you” we hear Prince sing as Missy enjoys the track from his 1987 double album, Sign o’ the Times.

“Saaaang Prince,” Missy captioned the clip with a raised-hands emoji. “Purple always been my favorite color.”

One month after Prince passed away on April 21, 2016, Missy revealed that after meeting her in Los Angeles, he planned a duet.

“He had sent me some stuff, music of his, and I moved and I could never find that music,” she said on CBC Music’s The Strombo Show, as reported by The Guardian.

The “Work it” rapper added that it is essential to honor great performers before they die.

“We really have to start appreciating these artists while they are still here, and not wait until these moments [after they’ve died] to recognize their genius and the greatness of what they’ve done for music,” said Missy.

When Prince passed in 2016, Missy posted a custom-made portrait of him with the comment, “This is heartbreaking. I had this Prince pic drawn on my wall years ago because his music inspired so many. R.I.P.”

Chris Jagger releasing new album featuring backing vocals from his brother, Mick; publishing memoir next month

Credit: Barry Lewis

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger‘s younger brother, veteran singer/songwriter Chris Jagger, will release a new studio album called Mixing Up the Medicine on September 10, and also will publish a memoir titled Talking to Myself the same day.

Mick has contributed some backing vocals to Chris’ album, which features several songs that the younger Jagger wrote with his frequent collaborator Charlie Hart, a multi-instrumentalist who also has played with late Faces bassist Ronnie Lane and Wreckless Eric.

Mixing Up the Medicine, which you can pre-order now, also features three songs with lyrics taken from poems by an obscure 19th-century poet named Thomas Beddoes that Chris set to music.

Among the other musicians featured on the album are one-time Who touring percussionist Jody Linscott and drummer Dylan Howe, son of Yes guitarist Steve Howe.

Chris has already released a few tunes from Mixing Up the Medicine as advance digital tracks, including “Talking to Myself,” a song inspired by his autobiography.

In the book, Chris delves in to his life story, including his childhood with older brother Mick, the siblings’ mutual appreciation of the blues, his own musical adventures and his travels around the world.

Talking to Myself will be the first autobiography from a member of the Jagger family, but Chris says that while he was working on it, he encouraged Mick to write his own.

“I said to [Mick], ‘I’ve almost finished my book, now let’s do yours’ and he laughed,” Chris reveals. “He’d do a fantastic book.”

Reflecting on his experience writing the memoir, Chris notes that “writing can be quite prosaic and descriptive. It doesn’t have to be all poetry. I have even included some recipes in [my book] too.”

You can check out an excerpt from the book at AmericanSongwriter.com.

Lizzo urges her fans and haters to band together to stop global catastrophes

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Coachella

Lizzo is stressing the message of her new song, “Rumors,” telling her fans and haters alike to pay attention to what’s going on in the world.

“Rumors,” also featuring Cardi B, is a song that tells haters to be more concerned about what’s happening in the world and not obsess over what women choose to do with their bodies and free time.

In a video posted Tuesday to Instagram, Lizzo featured various catastrophes happening around the globe as she plays the song’s chorus, “Spending all your time/ Tryna break a woman down/ Realer s*** is going on/ Baby, take a look around.”

Among the disasters featured in the brief clip are the skyrocketing cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, the earthquake that devastated Haiti, the wildfires in Turkey and Greece, and the troubling new reports concerning climate change.

“The internet has brought the world together, for better and for worse. Right now there are people in peril,” Lizzo expresses in the caption. “If I can help bring awareness to these issues it’s the least I can do.”

She also linked to several organizations that her followers can donate to and support.

Lizzo later took to Instagram live to call out the backlash she’s received for “Rumors,” telling fans. “We really need to check ourselves for how we treat people… I want this to be a conversation on how we treat people.  A conversation on how so much toxicity is rooted in our culture and in the way that we speak to each other and how we can progress and grow from that.”

She added that she will continue to be “transparent” about how she feels if “it is necessary to start a conversation for some progress.”

“If It Wasn’t for…” Riley Green, this might be just another song about “Trucks”

Big Machine

At first glance, Riley Green‘s latest hit, “If It Wasn’t for Trucks,” might seem like just another ode to country’s favorite vehicle for riding backroads, throwing tailgate parties, and hauling hay.

But for the Alabama native, it hits much closer to home than that.

“The whole song is really personal,” Riley reveals. “And talking about when my granddaddy died, and ‘where would I have first heard Merle [Haggard],’ the line about ‘where was I supposed to cry.'”

“You didn’t cry in front of anybody,” he explains. “You pulled off in your truck somewhere if you were gonna do it.”

“And I love the line, ‘how would anybody’s daddy get around,'” he goes on. “That thought to me is pretty cool to go, ‘Everybody’s dad drives a truck. What would they do if there weren’t trucks?’ They’d have to walk everywhere, because nobody’s dad drives a car.”

While Riley freely admits it’s almost impossible to come up with an entirely new idea, he maintains it’s the execution that can really make a song special.

“Everything’s probably been said. Anything you can ever say, any idea’s probably been written in one of the eight billion country songs that are out there,” Riley points out. “But finding a cool way to say it and finding a personal way to say it, I think is what makes a song stick out, in my mind.”

Right now, Riley’s busy with the Beers on Me Tour with Dierks Bentley and Parker McCollum.

“If It Wasn’t for Trucks” is the title track of Riley’s 2020 EP, and is also included on his new collection, Behind the Bar.
