It was a dogfight at the box office over the weekend, but in the end, Elvis downed Top Gun: Maverick.

Newly revised numbers quoted by Variety show that Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis Presley biopic beat Tom Cruise‘s sequel by around a million bucks.

The trade reports that Elvis made $31.1 million in its first weekend in theaters, while Top Gun: Maverick brought in $29.6 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. Earlier estimates had the movies tied at $30.5 million apiece.

That said, don’t feel bad for Tom: Maverick is the star’s biggest hit of his long career and flew past the billion-dollar mark at the global box office after just a month.

ZZ Top has released an updated live version of their 1975 gem “Heard It on the X” as the latest advance digital track from their upcoming album, Raw, which is due out July 22.

As previously reported, Raw was recorded in conjunction with the famed blues-rock trio’s 2019 documentary, That Little Ol’ Band from Texas. It’s being released as a tribute to longtime bassist Dusty Hill, who died in July 2021 at age 72.

For the movie, ZZ Top’s classic lineup of singer/guitarist Billy Gibbons, Hill and drummer Frank Beard played an intimate set of songs from their back catalog at historic Gruene Hall, known as “the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas,” which was filmed and recorded. That “raw” performance serves as the basis for the new album.

“Heard It on the X” originally appeared on ZZ Top’s fourth album, 1975’s Fandango!, which also included the classic hit “Tush.”

“Heard It on the X,” which featured Gibbons and Hill trading lead vocal lines, was an homage to the famous “border blaster” high-wattage AM radio stations that would broadcast from Mexico and that featured the call letters that started with “X.”

“Even though Dusty, Frank, and I grew up in different part of Texas we listened to the same stations, particularly the ‘X’ stations,” Gibbons notes, “and, as a result, we gained a lot of the same musical and cultural points of reference.”

You can check out a video of ZZ Top performing “Heard It on the X” at Gruene Hall at the band’s YouTube channel.

Raw, which was produced by Gibbons, can be preordered now and will be available as a 180-gram vinyl LP, on CD and via digital formats.

Here’s Raw‘s full track:

“Brown Sugar”
“Just Got Paid”
“Heard It on the X”
“La Grange”
“Tush”
“Thunderbird”
“I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide”
“Legs”
“Gimme All Your Lovin'”
“Blue Jean Blues”
“Certified Blues”
“Tube Snake Boogie”

Stevie Nicks weighs in on Supreme Court decision: “History is repeating itself”

Stevie Nicks has good news and bad news: She didn’t get COVID during her recent run of tour dates — but she is very upset about the Supreme Court’s ruling last week.

In a letter posted to Twitter, the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer writes, “Dear people, I got home from the tour late Wednesday night exhausted. It was great to be back in my world doing what I love for the first time in three years…AND I did not get COVID! We definitely proved that it can be done if you follow the rules. That is the good news.”

Stevie continues, “The bad news is that our women’s rights have been taken away.”

The Fleetwood Mac frontwoman then says that before she comments further, she wants everyone to watch a documentary called The Janes. “It’s a huge deja vu for me, as it is about my generation leading up to Roe v Wade,” she writes. “Please watch it. It will blow your mind.”

She signs off, “History is repeating itself…and it’s even more frightening this time.”

The Janes, available on HBO Max, tells the true story of seven women in Chicago in 1972 who were arrested for running an underground network for women who wanted to have safe, affordable abortions — which at the time were illegal. The film features firsthand accounts from those women, some speaking on the record for the first time.

The cause of death of Depeche Mode member Andy Fletcher has been revealed.

In an Instagram post penned by DM vocalist Dave Gahan and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore, the “Enjoy the Silence” outfit shares that Fletcher died of aortic dissection, which occurs when there’s a tear in the inner layer of the aorta artery.

“Even though it was far, far too soon, he passed naturally and without prolonged suffering,” Depeche Mode says of Fletcher.

Fletcher, often referred to as “Fletch” by his friends, bandmates and family, passed on May 26. He was 60 years old. At the time, a source close to the band shared that he passed away from natural causes.

In addition to sharing the cause of death news, Depeche Mode’s post also details a “celebration of Andy’s life” that took place in London last week.

“[It] was a beautiful ceremony and gathering with a few tears, but filled with the great memories of who Andy was, stories of all of our times together, and some good laughs,” the post reads. “Andy was celebrated in a room full of many of his friends and family, our immediate DM family, and so many people who have touched Andy’s and our lives throughout the years. All being together was a very special way to remember Andy and see him off.”

“Thank you for all of the love you’ve shown Andy and his family and friends over the last few weeks,” Gahan and Gore conclude. “It honestly means the world to all of us. Andy, you’ll be missed, but certainly not forgotten.”

Fletcher was a founding member of Depeche Mode and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2020.

Drake is the king of the music charts again with the #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top album on the Billboard 200.

“Jimmy Cooks,” the only collab on his new Honestly, Nevermind album, featuring 21 Savage, debuts at the top of the Hot 100 for Champagne Papi’s 11th Hot 100 No. 1. Drake also has the No. 6 track, “Sticky,” and the #7 song, “Falling Back.” Both are from his new chart-topping Honestly, Nevermind album.

The Toronto superstar is the first solo male singer to simultaneously debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 twice. On September 18, 2021, Certified Lover Boy was the top album and “Way 2 Sexy,” was the #1 single.

“Jimmy Cooks” appears to be inspired by the character Jimmy Brooks, which Drake portrayed on the CTV drama Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2001 to 2008.

As previously reported, Honestly, Nevermind debuted at #1 with 204,000 equivalent units. This is Drake’s 11th #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, making him the fifth artist to release more than 10 #1 albums. Leading the pack with 19 #1s is The Beatles, followed by Jay-Z with 14, and Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand tied with 11 each.

The 14-track album boasts the fourth-largest streaming week for an album in 2022, Billboard reports; Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar and Future make up the top three. Honestly, Nevermind is Drake’s seventh studio effort and the follow-up to Certified Lover Boy.

Walker Hayes has a new song coming next month and he’s giving fans a teaser.

On Monday, Walker shared a video of himself playing the guitar riff of an unreleased new track titled “Y’all Life” that’s slated to drop July 15. Sitting in the dark with only his hands and guitar illuminated, Walker offers a listen in to the country-meets-rock melody. He also informs fans that this is one of the rare instances where the melody came to him before the lyrics.

“Still got a lil bit before this drops July 15th but imma let y’all go ahead and get hooked on this lick..Lots of people ask if I write songs lyrics or music first…I’m usually a words first guy but with this one began with this guitar riff,” he teases in the caption, adding #YallLife.

The hitmaker is working on new music as his current single, “AA,” is making its way up the top 20 on country radio.

Walker kicked off 2022 with his headlining Fancy Like Tour and has a series of festival dates throughout the summer. He’ll then embark on his first arena tour, the Glad You’re Here Tour, September through November.

Ed Sheeran has numerous awards in his trophy case, but on Sunday he was awarded one of the most meaningful honors.

Ed was granted the Freedom of the City of London — which has been given out since the 1200s! The ceremonial honor is given to those with strong ties to the city.

Ed was selected for the award because he’s a patron of the London Irish Centre, which serves as a resource for the city’s Irish population. The center provides services such as advice sessions, concerts, information, classes and more.

“I think everybody knows how much I love London and how much it’s been a part of my musical journey, so to receive the Freedom of the City today is something truly special,” the singer remarked when picking up the honor.

He noted the other recipients of the honor when declaring, “Given my family’s Irish heritage, to receive the award from London’s first Irish Lord Mayor, Vincent Keaveny, and alongside London Irish Centre friends, is a bonus.”

The other recipients were Gary Dunne and Maeve Heath, the center’s creative director and longest-serving volunteer, respectively.
