Terry Kirkman, the singer-songwriter who was the founding member of the ’60s band The Association, passed away Saturday, September 23, at the age of 83.

“We’re saddened to report that Terry Kirkman passed away last night, RIP Terry,” read a post on The Association’s Facebook page. “He will live on in our hearts and in the music he so brilliantly wrote.”

The Association was known for their vocal harmonies. Kirkman wrote many of the California band’s hits, including their classic “Cherish,” which spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. The song was certified Gold by the RIAA and earned the band three of their overall six Grammy nominations.

Other songs Kirkman wrote for The Association include “Everything That Touches You,” “Requiem for the Masses,” “Six Man Band” and others.

Kirkman left The Association in 1972, rejoined the group in 1979 and stayed until 1984. He and his bandmates got together once again in 2003 when they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Petty and the band treated fans to such classic tunes as “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” “Breakdown,” “Learning to Fly” and more, wrapping the night with “You Wreck Me” and “American Girl.”

On October 2, Petty was found unconscious at his home, and died at UCLA Medical Center, although there were initially premature reports of his passing. The coroner report revealed that drugs played a role in his death.

Dave Grohl took a moment during Foo Fighters‘ headlining set at the Louder Than Life festival to pay tribute to Kent Stax, late drummer of the band Scream.

Grohl, of course, played in Scream as a teenager before he went on to join Nirvana and then form Foo Fighters. He actually joined Scream in Stax’s place when he left the band in 1986.

“I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for Scream,” Grohl told the Louder Than Life crowd. “And the man who’s place I took in that band, Mr. Kent Stax, one of the best punk rock drummers of all time, he passed the other day. So this one’s for Kent.”

The Foos then launched into their set closing performance of “Everlong.” Fan-shot footage of the moment was posted to YouTube.

Stax, born Bennett Kent Stacks, died September 20 following a battle with metastatic cancer. News of his passing came just a day after Scream had announced a new album, DC Special, featuring the original Still Screaming lineup: vocalist Pete Stahl, guitarist Franz Stahl, bassist Skeeter Thompson and Stax. Grohl also contributed to the record, which is due out November 10.

Foo Fighters have also been dealing with the death of their longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away March 2022. They returned to the road earlier in 2023 with new drummer Josh Freese.

Bob Dylan was the surprise guest at Farm Aid 2023, which took place Saturday, September 23, in Noblesville, Indiana.

The legendary artist wasn’t on the announced lineup but turned up to the Rouff Music Center to treat the crowd to a twenty-minute set. According to setlist.fm, Dylan was backed by The Heartbreakers and performed three tracks: “Maggie’s Farm,” for the first time since 2003, “Positively 4th Street,” for the first time since 2013, and “Ballad of a Thin Man.”

Dylan’s appearance was notable, as it was his comments about the plight of U.S. farmers at Live Aid in 1985 that sparked the idea for Farm Aid.

But Dylan was far from the only big name on the bill. The organization’s board members, Neil YoungJohn MellencampWillie NelsonDave Matthews and Margo Price also performed, along with Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack and more.

This was Young’s first return to Farm Aid since 2019, and he performed a short set that included “Comes A Time,” “Are There Any More Real Cowboys,” “Love Earth” and “Heart of Gold.” Mellencamp treated the crowd to eight songs, including classics like “Small Town,” “Jack & Diane,” “Rain on the Scarecrow” and more.

Willie closed the show with a full 18-song set that included “On The Road Again,” “Always On My Mind” and others, with many of the artists joining him for his closing numbers, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”/”I’ll Fly Away” and “It’s Hard to Be Humble.”

Farm Aid raises funds in support of family farmers, and fans can still help. A Farm Aid 2023 silent auction is running until October 6, offering autographed guitars, posters, books, albums and more from this year’s artists. All proceeds benefit Farm Aid.

Nothing like a Beyoncé concert to bring about a Destiny’s Child reunion.

The global superstar performed at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Saturday, September 23, where her Destiny’s Child group members were in attendance to show some love.

According to fan captured photosLeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson, founding members of the girl group alongside Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, were spotted at the tour. Rowland herself was spotted mingling with Michelle Williams, who joined the group at a later stage.

Notably absent from the reunion was Farrah Franklin, who briefly joined Destiny’s Child after the departure of Roberson and Luckett, but made a short-lived appearance before parting ways with the group.

In addition to a Destiny’s Child spotting, concertgoers were also surprised with a guest appearance from fellow Houston native Megan Thee Stallion. The duo thrilled fans with a live rendition of their hit collaboration, “Savage (Remix).”

In an endearing moment captured by fans and shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Beyoncé expressed her admiration for Megan, saying, “I love you, Queen.” In response, Megan reciprocated the love, declaring, “I love you, Beyoncé.”

This special Houston concert marked the first time that the dynamic duo performed their 2020 chart-topper together live.

Hozier reflects on 10 years of “Take Me to Church”: “I’m charged with a new energy”

Hozier reflects on 10 years of “Take Me to Church”: “I’m charged with a new energy”
ABC/Paula Lobo

Ten years ago, Hozier took us to church, which took him to music stardom.

The Irish artist’s breakout single was released in September 2013. Speaking with ABC Audio, Hozier recalls the “humble beginnings” of “Take Me to Church.”

“I was unsigned when I wrote that song,” Hozier shares. “Those vocals were recorded in the attic of my family home. I was an unknown, completely unknown, songwriter in Ireland. So my aspirations for it were very, very humble.”

“I hoped that it would find an audience and people would appreciate where it was coming from,” he continues. “I was proud of it in it being executed such that I think it communicated what it wanted to communicate, and it was executed well in that regard. But it became something far, far bigger, far greater than I had anticipated, for sure.”

Indeed, “Take Me to Church” reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified Diamond by the RIAA. And even a decade later, Hozier is happy to take thousands of fans to church each night while on tour.

“I still enjoy singing it, I have to say, I still enjoy performing it,” Hozier says. “I’m charged with a new energy and appreciation for it seeing the energy of the crowd and how much joy they get out of it.”

Hozier adds that he remains proud of the artistry and message of “Take Me to Church.”

“In some respects now it’s more applicable than it was 10 years ago,” he says. “Some of themes in that song, some of the things it’s pointing out, are bearing down on us maybe more so now than they were even 10 years ago when it was released.”

Hozier is currently on tour supporting his latest album, Unreal Unearth.

Can you believe it? Beyoncé‘s hit song “Cuff It” wasn’t originally intended for the singer, but instead the legendary R&B group Tony! Toni! Tone!

Raphael Saadiq, one-third of the beloved ’90s boy band, said so in a recent interview with Vulture, explaining he immediately thought of Queen B as someone who’d make the most of the track.

“That record was going to be a Tonyies record, the part that just sounds like [mimics the ‘Cuff It’ guitar riff],” Saadiq said.

He described how he “was going to do it,” but instead gave it to a friend, inquiring about Beyoncé as a possible artist to take over.

“She’s one of those people where if she’s feeling it, she’s going 100 percent in,” Saadiq thought, adding that he knew her version was “going to move people. It’s going to work.”

Saadiq, hitmaker The-Dream and others ended up with producer credits on the song.

Saadiq noted, “I already knew it was one of them joints. I always said, ‘If you drop the right music on an artist, it could go.'”

It certainly did “go.”

“Cuff It” peaked at number one on Billboard‘s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rhythmic charts, won Best R&B Song at the 65th Grammy Awards and was performed by Beyoncé on stages across the globe during her history-making Renaissance World Tour.
