Even those smart enough to get into Harvard didn’t realize they were classmates with Rivers Cuomo.

Reminiscing about his time attending the Ivy League school in the mid-90s, the Weezer frontman tells the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast that his fellow Harvard students didn’t recognize him.

“I’d be riding the bus with other students that were wearing Weezer shirts that had no idea it was me,” Cuomo says in a clip from the episode, which premiered on RollingStone.com.

To be fair, though, Cuomo was sporting a very long, identity-concealing beard at the time. He also walked with a cane due to recent surgery on his leg.

“I just looked like some really weird, super old weird guy,” Cuomo laughs.

Eventually, Cuomo’s day job was revealed on the last day of class.

“I remember having a conversation with some other kids, and one of them said, ‘So what are you doing for the summer?'” Cuomo recalls. “I was, like, ‘Uh, we’re going on tour with No Doubt.”

“He was, like, ‘Oh cool, are you working on a tour or something?'” the “Buddy Holly” rocker continues. “[I said], ‘No, I’m in Weezer.’ Minds were blown at that moment.”

Cuomo attended Harvard following the release of Weezer’s 1994 debut, the Blue Album, and again after 1996’s Pinkerton. He eventually graduated in 2006.

A sitcom inspired by Cuomo’s Harvard days called DeTour was in the works but was ultimately scrapped.

Fans of late rapper Coolio flocked to streaming services after his death last month, resulting in an extreme surge of his music catalog at over 264%.

According to data by Luminate, Billboard reports the rapper’s songs registered 19.6 million U.S. on-demand streams in the week of his death, September 28 – October 4.

Coolio’s biggest hit “Gangsta’s Paradise” re-entered the charts at #16 on Hot R&B/Hip Hop and #11 on Hot Rap Songs. The popular song gained the most traction on streaming with close to 15 million, an increase of 195%.

Upon its release in 1995, “Gangsta’s Paradise” sat at the top of the Hot 100 chart for seven weeks, won Single of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards and a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 38th annual show.

Appearing on the soundtrack to the film Dangerous Minds, the song’s accompanying music video includes Michelle Pfeiffer, who also starred in the film. Upon news of Coolio’s death, the actress paid tribute to the rapper with a heartfelt message on social media.

“Heartbroken to hear of the passing of the gifted artist @coolio,” she wrote. “He won a Grammy for his brilliant song on the soundtrack — which I think was the reason our film saw so much success.”

Coolio, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., died September 28 at age 59.

Lady Gaga has yet to be officially cast as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, but she’s already received a stamp of approval from Margot Robbie, who plays the DC villain in the Suicide Squad franchise.

Speaking to MTV News, Margot talked about Gaga potentially taking on the mantle in the upcoming Joker sequel. “It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning is all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way, like, Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” she expressed.

“I feel like in not so many cases are there female characters,” Margot continued. One example she provided is the case of Queen Elizabeth I, but Margot noted how shallow the pool for actresses really is. She didn’t focus on the negative and instead revealed how thrilled she is to have moved the needle.

“It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing and I think she’ll do something incredible with it,” the actress said.

Gaga confirmed in August she has been cast in the Joker sequel but declined to reveal which character she’ll play. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Gaga announced on Instagram, sharing a brief teaser of the upcoming thriller.

The video, set to a red backdrop, features Gaga’s all black silhouette — except for a little red heart on her right eye — dancing to Fred Astaire‘s “Cheek to Cheek.” The heart’s placement is in the same spot on Robbie’s movie interpretation of Quinn.

Joker: Folie à Deux laughs its way into theaters on October 4, 2024.

U2 frontman Bono took part in a Q&A event focusing on his forthcoming memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, on Friday in New York City as part of the 2022 edition of The New Yorker Festival.

According to Billboard, the event, which featured the 62-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer in conversation with longtime New Yorker editor David Remnick, began with the singer performing a trio of U2’s songs — “With or Without You,” “City of Blinding Lights” and “Vertigo.”

During the interview, Bono revealed that bassist Adam Clayton had a few critiques regarding the memoir, including that he felt there wasn’t enough about music in the book.

Regarding his bandmate’s complaint, Bono said he told Clayton, “Well, you know, it’s not just a music memoir. I wanted to give people a view that my life as an artist, my life as an activist, my life as a hooligan, my life as a husband, my life as a father … [were] all part of the same creative canvas.”

A major part of Surrender is devoted to Bono’s 40-year marriage to his wife, Ali. Musing about what has been behind the couple’s successful relationship, he said, “Friendship can outpace romantic love, sometimes. And friendship is what myself and Ali have.”

Bono also talked about the significance of the book’s title.

“I still find it hard to surrender to my bandmates,” he noted. “As an older person, it gets even harder to surrender to my wife, to surrender to my maker. I’m a defiant character, but I’m working on that … That’s why I wrote the book.”

Surrender will be released on November 1. Bono will launch a 14-date world book tour the following day in New York.

ABC

Lizzo isn’t here for comments made about her weight or physical appearance.

The superstar singer seemed to address comments Kanye West made about her weight during his recent appearance on The Tucker Carlson Show.

“I feel like everybody in America got my motherf*****g name in their motherf*****g mouth for no motherf*****g reason,” Lizzo said to a crowd during a recent concert in Toronto. Check out the viral moment caught on camera, later shared by The Shade Room.

“I’m minding my fat Black beautiful business,” she added before requesting to stay in Canada. “Can I stay here? Who can I marry for dual citizenship?”

During the controversial interview on October 7, Ye made statements about the “About Damn Time” singer.

“When Lizzo loses 10 pounds and announces it, the bots — on Instagram, they attack her losing weight, because the media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal when it’s actually unhealthy,” he said, adding, “It’s demonic.”

The “Praise God” rapper appeared on the show after wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt at his Yeezy fashion show in Paris last week. The shirt garnered much criticism and negative attention from celebrities like Jaden Smith, who found issue with its messaging.

“I Don’t Care Who’s It Is If I Don’t Feel The Message I’m Out,” Smith wrote after attending but exiting the fashion show early. “Black Lives Matter,” he wrote in a follow-up message.

Ye’s unpopular fashion choice was followed by anti-Semitic comments made on social media that resulted in the rapper’s suspension from Instagram and Twitter.

Hardy will welcome the new year with release of sophomore album, ‘the Mockingbird & THE CROW’
Big Loud Records

Hardy is blending all of his musical influences on his new album, the mockingbird & THE CROW.

The two-part sophomore album, set for release on January 20, features 17 tracks that marry Hardy’s passion for country and rock music, including three new songs that dropped simultaneously with the new album announcement.

Here lies country music,” serves as a nod to country tropes like broken hearts, trucks and red dirt roads, with references to Johnny Cash and Jack Daniels, while “truck bed” follows a man who, after a night of getting drunk in his own yard, has to resort to sleeping in his truck after his girlfriend locks him out. “The mockingbird & THE CROW” tells the singer’s personal story of journeying from songwriter to artist.

the mockingbird & THE CROW is, in my opinion, the best thing I’ve made so far. I had a lot of time to get in the weeds making this record with some of my favorite people in Nashville, and it truly captures every part of who I am as an artist,” Hardy says in a statement. “I’m honored that I get to share it with you next year; can’t wait to hear what you think about it.”

The project will also feature his top 40 single with Lainey Wilson, “wait in the truck,” and the recently released “JACK.”

The Mockingbird & THE CROW follows Hardy’s 2020 debut album, A ROCK, and collaborative EPs Hixtape, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, released in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

Julian Lennon discusses journey to create his new album, ‘Jude’

Julian Lennon discusses journey to create his new album, ‘Jude’
Julian Lennon discusses journey to create his new album, ‘Jude’
BMG

Last month, Julian Lennon released his first new studio album in 11 years, an 11-track collection titled Jude.

Julian, the older of late Beatle John Lennon‘s two sons, tells ABC Audio that Jude is actually made up mostly of previously unreleased older songs.

“This journey started with me receiving a few boxes of different formatted tapes from the basement of my business manager in London, who retired,” he explains, noting that the tapes dated back to the beginning of his music career.

“The first thing I saw was reel-to-reel tape,” Julian says. “[I]t had the original demos for ‘Too Late for Goodbyes,’ for ‘Valotte,’ a number of other songs on the [1984 Valotte] album, and a couple of songs that I was saving for a later date.”

Lennon says he began working his way through the tapes, picking songs to update for what he initially felt would make a good EP. Julian looked for tunes with themes that fit together well, and that reflected what was currently going on in his life and in the world, eventually realizing he had enough tracks for a full album.

The album’s title is a reference to the classic Beatles song “Hey Jude,” which Paul McCartney famously wrote in 1968 to cheer up a young Julian after his father left his mother. Lennon says titling the record Jude partly ties in with his recent decision to legally change his given first name, John, to Julian, which he’s been called since childhood.

“Jules, Jude, me, retrospective, collection of songs from life, taking ownership of the name Jude and/or being me finally … that all made sense to me,” he maintains. “And it was just pieces of this weird puzzle that just came together and all made sense in the end.”
