Charli XCX and Sam Smith are releasing a collaborative single on October 19 called “In the City.” Ahead of its release, the “Boom Clap” singer  took to TikTok to call out online trolls for their “hateful” comments about Sam.

“I’m about to release a song with Sam Smith, and the experience so far has been really interesting,” says a makeup-free Charli, who seems to be talking from a film set. “Because never in my life have I seen somebody receive so many hateful comments online.”

“Honestly it’s been really disheartening,” she continues, “but at the same time, I’m so proud of Sam’s ability to withstand that, because I know that I certainly couldn’t withstand it. So I just wanna say Sam, I love you. I love our song together and I’m in awe of your strength.”

In the comments, many fans chimed in with support for Sam, but others complained they’d prefer Charli release a solo version of the song.

Most recently, Sam and Charli were both featured on the Barbie soundtrack with their songs “Man I Am” and “Speed Drive,” respectively.

Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, had a pretty big weekend: a couple of dinner dates, a cameo on Saturday Night Live and lots of PDA at the star-studded after-party. Travis dished about it on his and his brother’s podcast, New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment.

Travis said he and Taylor “showed up at SNL having the idea of going [and] supporting [the show’s musical guest] Ice Spice,” noting, “Her and Taylor are good friends.” But once the two got involved in the actual show — Travis on a sketch poking fun at the NFL’s obsession with Taylor, and Taylor introducing Ice Spice — they had a “spectacular” time.

“It was electric to be back in that place,” said Travis, who hosted the show earlier this year. “There is just something about being in that room. And being their first episode this season, I had such a freaking blast man.” He added, “I don’t even remember what I said, I blacked out.”

When the two got to the after-party, Travis made headlines for moving a security guard aside so he could open the car door and help Taylor out. When Jason asked if he’d gotten any pushback from the guard for pushing him out the way, Travis clarified, “I didn’t push him.”

“I placed my hand on the gentleman’s back to let him know I was behind him,” Travis explained, noting his chivalrous behavior is just who he is.

“I feel like whenever I’m on a date I’m always having the sense of like, I’m a man in the situation, I’m like protective, yeah for sure. You always kind of have that feeling — or that self-awareness, I guess.”

On This Day, October 18, 1957: Paul McCartney makes his first appearance with The Quarrymen

Paul McCartney made his first appearance with John Lennon’s band The Quarrymen at New Clubmoor Hall in Liverpool, England.

McCartney was so nervous that he messed up his big guitar solo on the song “Guitar Boogie.”

Years later, McCartney claimed George Harrison, who joined The Quarrymen in February 1958, was recruited because McCartney realized he was “just too frightened” to be the group’s lead guitarist.

Of course by 1960, the band evolved into The Beatles, one of the most successful rock groups of all time. McCartney also went on to have a successful solo career and continues to tour to this day. In fact, he launches the latest leg of his Got Back tour on Wednesday, October 18, in Adelaide, Australia.

Real World/Photo by Nadav Kander

Peter Gabriel has spent the past year giving fans previews of his new album, i/o, dropping a new song with each full moon. Now, he’s finally ready to share the entire project. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is set to release the 12-track record December 1. It will be his first album of new material since 2010’s Scratch My Back.

“After a years-worth of full moon releases, I’m very happy to see all these new songs back together on the good ship i/o and ready for their journey out into the world,” Gabriel shares.

All songs on the album are getting two stereo mixes: the Bright-Side Mix by Mark “Spike” Stent and the Dark-Side Mix by Tchad Blake. Each artist’s mix will be part of a double-CD package and will also be available as separate double vinyls.

“We have two of the greatest mixers in the world in Tchad and Spike and they definitely bring different characters to the songs,” Gabriel explains. “Tchad is very much a sculptor building a journey with sound and drama, Spike loves sound and assembling these pictures, so he’s more of a painter.”

There will also be a third remix, the In-Side Mix in Dolby Atmos, by Hans-Martin Buff, which will be included in a separate three-disc set that also includes a Blu-ray.

Peter Gabriel’s i/o is available for preorder now.

Here is the track list:

“Panopticom”
“The Court”
“Playing for Time”
“i/o”
“Four Kinds of Horses”
“Road to Joy”

A previously unreleased concert from the Grateful Dead is coming out on CD later this month, featuring liner notes by a famous celebrity Deadhead.

Dave’s Picks Volume 48 will feature the band’s complete November 20, 1971, concert from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, with Basketball Hall of Famer Bill “Grateful Red” Walton, who attended the show, sharing his memories in the notes.

“Basketball and music have always been alike for me, the celebration of life and all other good things,” Walton, who played for the UCLA Bruins, shares. “UCLA and the Grateful Dead embody the highest levels of this celebratory joy. At UCLA, it was endless fun, every day, in every way. We couldn’t wait to get there, to get going — though it was never as much fun as when the Grateful Dead came to play with and for us.”

Chosen by Dead archivist David Lemieu, the two-CD concert features performances of such Dead classics as “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Ramble On Rose,” an over 23-minute jam on “The Other One” and more.

The set also comes with a third CD featuring a concert from October 24, 1970, at Keil Auditorium in St. Louis, Missouri, with performances of such songs as “Not Fade Away,” “Good Lovin,’” “Dancing In The Street” and others.

Only 25,000 numbered copies of Dave’s Picks Volume 48 are being produced. They are available for preorder now and will ship October 27.

In other Grateful Dead news … fans can now get their hands on the first-ever Grateful Dead vape pen from Grenco Science. The Grateful Dead x G Pen Dash is covered in the band’s colors and features their signature imagery, including the Grateful Dead skeleton. It’s available at gpen.com.

Dirty Honey is launching a U.S. tour supporting their upcoming album, Can’t Find the Brakes, on Wednesday, October 18, in San Francisco. Speaking with ABC Audio, frontman Marc LaBelle teases what you can expect from the shows.

“Obviously a bunch of new music, for starters,” LaBelle shares. “We’re really excited, obviously, for a bunch of people to hear that.”

LaBelle adds that the music itself won’t be the only thing new about Dirty Honey’s live presentation.

“I think there’s definitely gonna be a little bit of an initiative to create a little bit more of a show around what we’re doing,” he says. “I think the music is a little bit more theatrical, and how we translate that to the stage is gonna be a definite, conscious decision.”

Can’t Find the Brakes, the sophomore Dirty Honey album, is due out November 3, but if you catch the tour before then, you’ll be able to hear it a bit early. Leading up to the record’s official release, Dirty Honey plans to offer copies of Can’t Find the Brakes at each show.

“When we found out the delivery times were a little bit ahead of a schedule, we were like, ‘Let’s just do it, that’s gonna be awesome,'” LaBelle says. “I think people are gonna love it.”

Dirty Honey’s tour will also feature “Blackout” rocker Austin Meade on the bill.

Taylor Swift and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds are good friends, and Ryan and his Deadpool 3 co-star Hugh Jackman joined Taylor when she went to watch Travis Kelce play in New Jersey earlier this month. But does that mean that Taylor is going to appear in Deadpool 3, as has been rumored? The director’s not saying.

When asked by The Wrap, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy wouldn’t confirm or deny reports that Taylor will play the Marvel Comics character Dazzler in the movie.

“They sure are loud,” Levy said of the Swifties who are excited at the possibility of her portraying the character — a mutant who can convert sound vibrations into light and then weaponize it.

But Levy won’t spill. “I’m going across the board. ‘No comment’ because that’s a double whammy. That’s Taylor-related. And it’s MCU-related. I’m no dummy,” he says. “You’re going to have to wait and see.”

And there may not even be any movie to watch for quite some time. Deadpool 3 is set for release on May 3, but given the ongoing strike, Levy says he’s not sure it’ll even be finished in enough time to make the release date.

Cher says she had to take voice lessons to prepare for new Christmas album

Cher has one of the most powerful and iconic voices in pop music — but she’s revealed that ahead of recording her new holiday album, Christmas, she needed to take her pipes in for a tune-up.

“I haven’t sung in years. So I call my unbelievable teacher, Adrienne Angel, who I love like the sun and the moon,” Cher, 77, tells The New York Times. “She’s 96; she’s been my teacher since my 40s … I just wanted it to sound like my voice. I didn’t want to have to lower any keys. That’s always the dead giveaway.”

“My doctor said I have the vocal cords of a 25-year-old girl,” Cher adds. “I mean, look, you don’t usually have a very great voice at 77, right? But it seems like a lot of us are having some sort of resurgence. I don’t know what it is. Revenge of the old people.”

Old or not, Cher says she’s grateful to be able to do what she does. She recalls a conversation she had with Barbra Streisand when she was still touring. Barbra asked her, “Cher, why are you still doing this?” She says she replied, “Because there’s going to come a day where I can’t do it. And I don’t want to have thought that I could have done my art longer, and chose not to.”

Ironically, Cher says holiday songs aren’t front and center in her own Christmas celebrations.

“I don’t cook, but everyone ends up at my house … [w]e’ve got lots of kids around, and teenagers. Mostly we’re just talking and acting crazy and watching movies and hanging out,” she says. “We don’t put on, really, Christmas music, just fun music. But music doesn’t seem to be a large part of it. Everybody’s talking too loud.”
