MTV EMAs canceled “out of an abundance of caution,” rescheduled for November 2024

The MTV EMAs, scheduled for November 5 in Paris, France, have been canceled due to the conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement shared with ABC Audio, a spokesperson for Paramount said, “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.”

The statement continued, “The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024.”

On social media, the MTV EMA account further clarified, “Voting is continuing and the winning artists will receive their MTV EMA Awards.”

The EMAs had just announced a star-studded lineup of performers earlier this week, including, The Kid LAROIDavid GuettaJung KookSabrina CarpenterRemaAnne-MarieCoi Leray and Reneé Rapp

The leading nominee is Taylor Swift with seven nods; Olivia Rodrigo and SZA are next with six each.

MusiCares, the charitable arm of the Recording Academy, has named Jon Bon Jovi its Person of the Year for 2024.

That means Jon will be the guest of honor at the MusiCares annual gala, which will takes place February 2 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, two nights before the Grammy Awards. At the event, a star-studded lineup is expected to perform Jon’s songs.

On social media, Jon offered his thanks and shared a video that his “dear friend” Paul McCartney made, telling him he’d be receiving the honor.

Laura Segura, executive director of MusiCares, says in a statement that Jon’s “remarkable contributions to rock and roll have not only left an indelible mark on the music industry, but also in the hearts of countless fans around the world.”

She also noted he’s getting the award for his philanthropic work as well, adding, “His long-standing commitment to serving food-insecure and unhoused individuals inspires us all. We’re looking forward to celebrating him and the many ways he has made a difference in this world.”

“Humbled” by the honor, Jon notes in a statement, “Philanthropic work has been a cornerstone of my life and has always run in tandem to my music career and achievements. I know this for sure: helping one’s community is helping one’s self.”

The money raised by the gala goes toward MusiCares’ programs that help those in the music community with physical and mental health, addiction recovery, preventive clinics, unforeseen personal emergencies and disaster relief.

Tickets to the event are available at personoftheyear.musicares.org.

Sonic Youth‘s Thurston Moore ponders the possibility that the band could reunite in a new interview with The New York Times.

“Everybody wants us to get back together,” Moore says. “I don’t foresee it happening because I think maybe it’s a little too unwieldy at this point … I’d rather be like the Beatles and never get back together.”

However, Moore doesn’t completely shut the idea, saying it would be “really worthwhile” for Sonic Youth to reunite.

“[It’s] something that’s always going to be on the table,” he says.

Of course, there remains the question of Moore’s relationship with bassist Kim Gordon. The two had been married for 27 years before splitting up in 2011, leading to Sonic Youth’s disbandment.

In response to a question about if he and Gordon could share the same stage again, Moore says, “We’re adults.”

“We can find our peace in this kind of situation,” he says. “We’re very connected in our family with my daughter and my nieces and everything. It’s not like some hate-fest or anything.”

Moore is set to release a new memoir, Sonic Life, on October 24. Earlier this month, Moore shared that he’d canceled his U.S. book tour due to a health issue, which he now reveals is a longstanding condition related to his heart rhythm.

“This year, it became slightly concerning,” Moore says. “I was finding myself at times to be so weak I could hardly walk around the neighborhood.”

Moore adds, though, that his “prognosis is very good,” and his book tour through the U.K., where he now lives, is still on schedule.

Billy Joel will turn 75 next year, and to celebrate the milestone, he’s doing the same thing he did when he turned 65.

Just like he did in 2014, Billy will spend his birthday — May 9 — onstage at Madison Square Garden. It’ll be the third-to-last show of his residency and his 148th lifetime show at the famous venue. However, this particular show is subject to change if it conflicts with a playoff game.

Citi cardmembers will have access to a presale starting October 23 at 10 a.m ET via citientertainment.com. The general onsale starts October 27 at ticketmaster.com.

As previously reported, Billy will conclude his residency in July with his 150th career show at the Garden. Billy’s next show at the venue is Friday, October 20. He has two shows with Stevie Nicks left in 2023: November 10 in Minneapolis and December 8 in Phoenix. Billy will ring in 2024 with a New Year’s Eve show at USB Arena in Elmont, NY.

Creed held a press conference Wednesday, October 18, to address the Texas Rangers’ ongoing use of the band’s music amid the baseball team’s ongoing run through the MLB playoffs.

As previously reported, Rangers pitcher Andrew Heaney shared that the team had been playing Creed’s music before games. Fans have since started singing the song “Higher” in the stands during games.

As seen in video posted by ABC affiliate WFAA, all four members of Creed attended the press conference while wearing Rangers jerseys.

“I was just floored and excited that the music, after all these years, is still connecting with people, still inspiring folks,” says frontman Scott Stapp. “I’m grateful to be part of the ride.”

The Rangers phenomenon comes during an exciting time for Creed, who announced in July that they were reuniting to perform at the 2024 Summer of ’99 concert cruise, marking their first live shows together in over 10 years. As drummer Scott Phillips teased during the press conference, there’s more to come.

“We have a big announcement coming out in a couple weeks,” Phillips said. “There’s some Creed news on the horizon.”

By the way, the Rangers fell to the Houston Astros on Wednesday 8-5, marking their first loss of playoffs, though they still lead the series 2-1.

Singer-songwriter Dwight Twilley, who gained fame in the ’70s and ’80s with hits like “I’m On Fire” and “Girls,” passed away Wednesday, October 18, at the age of 72. The Church Studios in Tulsa confirmed the news of his death on Facebook

“With heavy hearts, we share the devastating news of Dwight Twilley’s passing. Today, he peacefully departed this world, surrounded by the love of his life, Jan, and close friends,” they wrote. “The loss is immeasurable, and our words can’t capture the depth of our grief. Dwight’s musical prowess touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many. We are profoundly thankful for the enduring musical legacy he has bestowed upon us all.”

The Dwight Twilley Band, which also featured Phil Seymour, had their first Billboard hit in 1975 with their debut single, “I’m On Fire,” which peaked at #15. They released their debut solo album, Sincerely, in 1976, although it failed to have much chart success, peaking at #138.

Seymour left the Dwight Twilley band in 1978, and Twilley went on to launch a solo career, releasing his first album, Twilley, in 1979. His biggest hit as a solo artist was the track “Girls” from his 1984 album, Jungle, which peaked at #16 on the chart.

He released his last album, Always, in 2014.
