New Music Friday: Christina Aguilera, Elton John, Britney Spears, Shakira and Carly Rae Jepsen

It’s Friday! Let’s see who’s out with new tunes…

Christina Aguilera celebrates the 20th anniversary of her Stripped album on Saturday. Ahead of the milestone, she dropped a brand new remix of the standout track “Beautiful” by DJ Benny Benassi.

Elton John and Britney Spears have released a remix of their “Hold Me Closer” collab, which is by Purple Disco Machine. The German producer infuses a nu-disco beat to the celebrated track.

Shakira has released the heartbreak anthem “Monotonía” with Latin superstar Ozuna. The two also dropped the song’s official music video, which sees Shakira put her heart on display — literally — and do everything she can to protect it. This is the second offering off Shakira’s rumored 12th album following the previously released “Te Felicito.”

Carly Rae Jepsen has released her fifth album, The Loneliest Time, which she says is “her baby.” She said on Instagram, “This album came together in isolation but it came alive on the road. Releasing The Loneliest Time has been fun, healing, scary, silly – somehow all at once!” She teased, “I’ve never been quite so open in my writing before.”

Queen premieres music video for recently released archival track “Face It Alone”

Queen has debuted a newly created music video for “Face It Alone,” the recently released archival track featuring the late Freddie Mercury that was recorded during the sessions for the band’s 1989 studio album The Miracle.

The clip, which you can watch now on YouTube, features footage and photos of Queen’s members from around the time of the making and release of The Miracle, as well as statuettes of the band; a recreation of Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, where the album was recorded; and animated segments.

The video was directed by Simon Lupton, who says of the clip, “The intention was to create, despite how the lyrics might be interpreted, an upbeat video that celebrated the fact that the period during which this song was recorded was one of the most prolific and cohesive in the band’s history.”

Lupton adds, “The meaning of the song has been interpreted that when something catastrophic occurs in your life, your instinct is to surround yourself with what is dearest and most important to you.”

“Face It Alone” serves as the lead single from an upcoming expanded reissue of The Miracle, dubbed The Miracle Collector’s Edition, which will be released on November 18. The recording was rediscovered during the process of putting the collection together.

The Miracle Collector’s Edition features five CDs, one vinyl LP, a Blu-ray disc, a DVD and a 76-page hardback book.

“Face It Alone” is one of six previously unreleased songs on the collection, along with “Dog with a Bone,” “I Guess We’re Falling Out,” “You Know You Belong to Me,” “When Love Breaks Up” and “Water.”

MAX teamed up with DJ Illenium for “Worst Day,” where he sings about struggling with his inner darkness and choosing to turn to the light — preventing what would have been “the worst day of my life.” The duo also released a music video for the uplifting single.

The Chainsmokers also jumped on the remix bandwagon, but did that to their new album, So Far So Good. Fans can now listen to a lo-fi version of the entire album. All the songs are on YouTube with animated visualizers.

GAYLE unleashed the breakup anthem “ALEX,” which she says she wrote with her friends when she realized her relationship was doomed.

Rosa Linn has released “WDIA (Would Do It Again)” with “Arcade” singer Duncan Laurence. The song is about how Rosa would be willing to do everything over — even if it means losing the person she’s in love with — just to feel the high of falling in love once more.

Taylor Swift isn’t the only singer who released a song named “Karma” on Friday — so did Trevor Daniel. His upbeat track is about him enjoying his fame and ignoring the bully who is trying to tear him down.

Elle King contemplates a different way of life in the tongue-and-cheek “Try Jesus”

Elle King is continuing to roll out new tracks from her forthcoming country album, Come Get Your Wife, and the singer proves she’ll try anything once — or twice — in new song “Try Jesus.”

“‘Try Jesus’ came at a time I was trying to give my life over to something greater — and you can feel it,” Elle says. The song recounts a series of dud relationships, leading her to believe after all the guys she’s tried to fall in love with that perhaps she should “Try Jesus.”

The music video for the song — which finds Elle shopping at the Dollar Mart Plus, with surprising results — has some aesthetics in common with the TV series The Righteous Gemstones, and for good reason: it was directed by actor Edi Patterson, who plays Judy Gemstone on the show.

The quirky clip stars Elle not only as herself, but as a series of no-good guys who try — and fail — to steal her heart. Finally she finds happiness, literally, with the help of a store clerk. His name? Jesus, of course.

Elle’s full-length country debut is set to drop on January 27. It’s available for preorder now.

Taylor Swift encourages fans to face their insecurities in new #TSAntiHeroChallenge on YouTube Shorts

Taylor Swift admits she can sometimes be her own worst enemy in her new song “Anti-Hero,” and now, she’s challenging fans to do the same.

To celebrate the release of Midnights, her 10th studio album, Taylor has partnered with YouTube Shorts for the #TSAntiHeroChallenge. Basically, fans are encouraged to call themselves out while soundtracking the clip to the new single.

For those who think they’re perfect and are unable to participate, the challenge offered a few suggestions of the problematic things most people are guilty of, such as taking the last slice of pizza, putting off the laundry or clapping at the end of a movie.

Taylor was first to embark on the challenge she created, openly admitting she thinks her cat, Benjamin Button, is her son. Fans might find this confession shocking since it is normally her two other cats — Meredith and Olivia — who hog the spotlight.

She followed up with another offering, which takes a more serious tone, confessing she is guilty of inflicting “self-imposed isolation” upon herself. She comically illustrates this by showing herself guiltily sitting in her bathtub.

By the end of this challenge, Swifties will have proudly joined Taylor in showing off their own anti-heroic traits. While there’s no prize for those who participate, Taylor thinks we all could use a laugh and have a little fun at our own expense.

Ty Dolla $ign and DJ Mustard return with the official music video for “My Friends” featuring Lil Durk.

At the start of the Daniel Russell-directed visual, Ty jolts up out of his nap prepared to shoot the high-energy music video. Turns out, the trio partied so hard, he forgot they had already done so.

“My Friends” is the first single from Ty and DJ Mustard’s forthcoming joint album, which doesn’t yet have an official title or release date. The new song also kicked off ESPN and Atlantic Record’s partnership for 2022-2023 NBA season.

Upon release of the single earlier this month, Ty & Mustard spoke of their long-term music relationship.

“Every time my brother Mustard and I link up, we make history; ‘Paranoid,’ ‘Or Nah’ and now ‘My Friends.’ What’s success and fortune if you ain’t getting it with your day ones? Big shout out to Durk for being a part of this song,” Ty Dolla $ign said.

Mustard added, “We’ve been doing this for more than a decade now and it’s always special when me and Ty link.”

Paramore answers “rumors” with UK tour announcement

After teasing the reveal of “rumors” earlier this week, Paramore has announced a tour of the U.K. and Ireland.

The outing is set to launch in April 2023. The bill will also include Bloc Party, who Hayley Williams previously shared was a big influence on Paramore’s upcoming album, This Is Why.

Paramore hinted at some type of news being announced Friday with their ever-updating website calendar, which previously read “rumors are true” for today, October 21. The next entry on the calendar is for November 3 and simply reads, “tonight.”

Meanwhile, Paramore is currently on a U.S. tour, which marks the band’s first live dates in four years. They’ll release This Is Why, the follow-up to 2017’s After Laughter, on February 10, 2023.

Charlie Puth says he is “definitely” in love with his new girlfriend

Charlie Puth is off the market, and based on his comments, she may be the one.

Charlie was grilled on The Howard Stern Show about his love life, which he usually keeps private, but the singer decided to finally address the elephant in the room. Charlie revealed he’s “definitely” in love.

When asked if he will make a new album should his girlfriend ever dump him, Charlie cryptically replied, “I don’t think she will.” When pressed further, the singer admitted that he thinks he has finally found “the one.”

He said the person he’s dating is “someone that I grew up with.” Charlie, a New Jersey native, explained, “As my life gets more turbulent and I travel everywhere, it’s nice to have someone close to you that you’ve known for a very long time.”

While dancing around identifying his girlfriend, Charlie said, “She’s always been very, very nice to me… And I would assume that when times inevitably are hard in the future, because what is life without valleys and peaks, she would be there for me as well.”

As for why he opted to date someone who knew him before he was famous, versus all the hot models or big-name singers he could link up with now, Charlie admitted, “Honestly, I get so scared of people now, like, I can’t really walk anywhere for whatever reason, and I think the more that happens, the more I just want to retreat to someone that I’ve known for a long time.”

Because of that, Charlie vowed he won’t reveal his girlfriend’s identity — and upped his sentiments by declaring the media will never know if he proposes to her. “I’ll go out of my way to make sure they don’t know,” he said.

20 years ago, Rod Stewart turned classic crooner with first ‘Great American Songbook’ album

Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the release of an unlikely hit album: It Had to Be You: The Great American Songbook by Rod Stewart.

The raspy-voiced rocker surprised everyone by recording an entire album of standards including “That Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “The Way You Look Tonight” and “The Nearness of You.” Fans liked what they heard: The album reached number four on the Billboard album chart, becoming his first release to hit the top five since 1978.

In fact, the album was such a hit that it spawned no less than four Songbook sequels, all of which reached the top five. The third installment, 2004’s Stardust, was Rod’s first number one album since 1978’s Blondes Have More Fun, and it even won him his first, and to date only, Grammy.

After volume four of Songbook, Rod released yet another album made up of covers, except this one was rock: 2006’s Still the Same: Great Rock Classics of Our Time. That was followed by Soulbook, another covers album which featured him singing R&B and Motown hits, his final Great American Songbook album, 2010’s Fly Me to the Moon and a 2012 holiday album, Merry Christmas Baby.

Finally, in 2013, Rod, who’d always thought of himself as a songwriter first, released an album of original material: Time. He explained that he’d done all those covers albums because he’d been suffering from writer’s block, but reliving his life story for his 2012 autobiography led him to rediscover his love of songwriting.

Since then, Rod’s released no less than three additional albums of original material, the most recent being 2021’s The Tears of Hercules.

Coco Jones celebrates first music nomination: “I’m BESIDE myselfff”

Congrats are in order for Coco Jones, who just earned her first-ever award nomination as a musician.

The “Caliber” singer took to social media to celebrate her Best New Artist nomination at the 2022 BET Soul Train Awards.

“BE FORREALLLL??? My first nomination as a musician I’m BESIDE myselfff @SoulTrain thank you!!!” she tweeted.

While the nomination marks the first of her music career, Jones was recognized by BET in June when she was nominated for Best Actress at the 2022 BET Awards. Her role as Hilary Banks on the hit Peacock series Bel-Air cemented Jones as a star on the rise. Now, she’s making a name for herself in the music world.

After alerting fans of new music this month, Jones dropped her latest track “ICU” on Friday. She then shared clips of what looks to be the song’s music video but has yet to release an official video.

Up against Jones for Best New Artist are CKay, Dixson, Doechii, Fireboy DML, Muni Long, Steve Lacy and Tems.

The Soul Train Awards 2022 takes place November 13 in Las Vegas and premieres Sunday, November 27 at 8 p.m. ET on BET and BET Her.
