In a career-spanning interview with Guitar World, Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford is asked whether his band or KISS is the “America’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band.” But he says the answer isn’t as simple as you might think.

“That’s a really tough one. I think you’d have to come up with things to sort that out categorically,” he tells the publication. “But what I love about KISS is they can go on forever because of their makeup. So that’s one aspect of what they do that’s very different from what we do.”

“The last KISS show I saw was absolutely brilliant, and there are days when I’ve come off the stage with Aerosmith and just went, ‘Wow. What the hell was that? How do I recreate that?’” he continues, adding, “You never know when you’re going to have one of those supernatural shows. It’s not something you can rehearse; a lot of it comes down to the band and the audience.”

“Sometimes you end up with a magic moment you can’t predict; I think all the good bands have those moments. We have them, and so does KISS,” he concludes. “I don’t know how you choose.”

Whitford also says that he believes Aerosmith’s 2012 Music from Another Dimension! will be their final album, which he thinks is sad because “that was just a p***-poor record.” As far as his favorite Aerosmith album, that’s 1976’s Rocks.

“I think you’re right about the generational way of thinking because, to me, it’s Rocks. If I had to go to a desert island with just one of our albums, Rocks would be it. So put that on my gravestone – it’s Rocks.

November 8, 1971 was the day that Led Zeppelin released their iconic untitled fourth album, known as Led Zeppelin IV, ZoSo, Symbols or Runes.  And today — November 8, 2023 — brings us the news that the figure who appears on the cover of the album has been identified.

The image depicts a man in old-fashioned dress, with a huge bundle of sticks on his back. Now, the BBC reports that Brian Edwards of the University of West England found the original photo while he was looking through a photo album for research on a different topic.

“I instantly recognized the man with the sticks – he’s often called the stick man,” said Edwards, adding that his discovery was “quite a revelation.”

Edwards went on a hunt for information about the photo and determined that the man was likely a 19th century thatcher named Lot Long, from Wiltshire, England, and that the photograph was taken by Ernest Farmer, the BBC reports.  Farmer was the first head of the school of photography at what is now the University of Westminster.

The Wiltshire Museum has acquired the photo and will put it on display next year in an exhibit called The Wiltshire Thatcher: a Photographic Journey through Victorian Wessex.

The image on the Led Zeppelin IV album cover is colorized and appears in a frame. It was reportedly spotted by Robert Plant in an antique shop near Jimmy Page‘s house.

Poet Paul Muldoon on interviewing Paul McCartney: “He’s very open”

Paul McCartney fans are getting insight into his songwriting process with podcast McCartney: A Life in Lyrics, which features interviews McCartney did with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon for McCartney’s bestselling book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present.

Muldoon tells ABC Audio that when he and McCartney first sat down for the interviews they had no idea anyone would ever hear them, which may have made the interviews even more interesting.

He says that being so relaxed each other made for good listening, though that’s not what they set out to do. He adds, “In fact, I’m sure there were moments where we were so unbuttoned that we probably wouldn’t have thought it would ever be broadcast.”

Muldoon says one of their main goals during the interviews was to make sure McCartney didn’t tell the same stories he had shared in the past.

“The fact that he has been interviewed so often over the years makes it more difficult, actually,” he says. “We felt some kind of, I suppose, obligation to mix it up a little bit.”

And Muldoon insists that McCartney was never hesitant to discuss anything, noting, “He’s very open.”

“There’s very little of a schism or a chasm between how he presents himself and who he is,” Muldoon shares. “I think … what you see is pretty much what you get.”

A new episode of McCartney: A Life in Lyrics, a co-production of Pushkin and iHeartPodcasts, premieres every Wednesday, with each episode focused on a specific song. So far, there have been episodes on “Penny Lane,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Let it Be” and more.

That’s what I like: Bruno Mars gets his own signature guitar

Bruno Mars says he doesn’t think of himself as a guitar player, but Fender has honored him with his own signature model anyway.

The Bruno Mars Signature Stratocaster comes in a brand new color named after Bruno: Mars Mocha Heirloom. The gold hardware is aged, which gives the guitar a worn-in feel, and it features vintage-style elements and leopard-print accents. The finish and the leopard print are nods to two of Bruno’s guitar heroes: Jimi Hendrix and Prince

Plus, the guitar comes with custom pickups that will allow fans to get the same kind of sounds that Bruno uses on his records. It costs $3,000 — but that includes a case and a leopard-print strap.

The new instrument will allow Bruno to play with “Finesse,” pun intended. He says in a statement, “I don’t think of myself as a guitar player. I’m more of a frustrated songwriter. Every song is like a puzzle you have to solve, and a good guitar can bring something out of you that can help take you to the finish line.”

“That’s what I wanted from this guitar,” he added. “It was also important to have a workhorse that I could depend on for performing live and writing in the studio, whether it be rhythm or lead.”

Luke Combs is up for four awards at the 2023 CMA Awards, including one in the coveted Entertainer of the Year category.

The nod arrives after Luke spent the bulk of 2023 taking the world by storm on his World Tour. The global trek included stateside stops as well as shows in countries like Australia, Germany, Scotland, France, Denmark and  England.

Speaking with ABC Audio, Luke reflected on his international feat, his view from the stage and a personal sacrifice made.

“It was really difficult, to be honest. You know, Beau was born while I was in Australia, so that was very difficult,” Luke shares. “But from the stage, man, I mean, it’s amazing. It’s different. We played this year everywhere from, I believe it was 800 people in Paris to 65,000 people. So that was the range of shows that we played this year. It was pretty wild.”

Will Luke win CMA Entertainer of the Year for a third consecutive year? Find out Wednesday, November 8, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Austin John Winkler proves “Lips of an Angel” is “more of a love song than it is a cheating song” with Shaylen

The ever-unpredictable TikTok has resurrected the Hinder song “Lips of an Angel,” with users reimagining the 2000s rock hit by adding a female perspective to the lyrics. The track’s resurgence inspired ex-Hinder frontman Austin John Winkler to put a new spin on “Lips of an Angel” himself.

“I thought that it would be a really cool thing to actually really go in and lay to down a female perspective to tie the whole story in together,” Winkler tells ABC Audio.

To do that, Winkler teamed up with country artist Shaylen, who sings a new verse on “Lips of an Angel” as the woman with whom the song’s protagonist is on the phone. Winkler feels that Shaylen’s verse and all the TikTok videos bring out an aspect of “Lips of an Angel” he believed was always there in some form.

“It’s more of a love song than it is a cheating song,” Winkler says. “And I can tell you that, because I wrote it.”

“I think having [women] wanting to have their side of the story kinda be told was kinda solidification that the song’s for everybody,” he adds. “It’s not just kinda a one-sided thing.”

The updated “Lips of an Angel” comes with a new video, which, among other things, replaces the very prominent landline in the original clip with a cellphone. Though even the concept of using a phone to actually call people might seem like ancient technology to the younger generation, Winkler feels the idea still translates. Besides, the lyric, “Honey why you texting me so late?” doesn’t have quite the same, ahem, ring to it.

“If you really feel that way about the person, you’re gonna give them a shout,” Winkler says. “You’re gonna wanna hear the voice.”

Tierra Whack said her latest song, “Chanel Pit,” is really only new to fans.

The Philadelphia native delved into the makings of the track, revealing in a recent Apple Music interview that she dug it up from the archives before releasing it to the world.

“The song has been, it’s been sitting for a while. I made it a few years ago,” Whack said.

Whack said she has lots of music stacked away, but she dropped “Chanel Pit” because of the response it got anytime she’d play it for people. “Their eyes would just light up,” she said.

When it comes to the first line of the song — it’s also the song’s chorus — “I think I wrote it down in my notes and then I went to the studio and I just was like, ‘I got to start with this line: Mosh pit smell like Chanel,'” she said.

“Mhm, mosh pit smell like Chanel, hm / Yes, Microsoft, I’ma excel, hm,” she raps.

As for the origin of the line, “I actually was in the mosh pit. I was going crazy, just having fun.”

There’s even a unique story for the song title.

“I had this friend, I think I was at an event, a show, a concert or something, and he pulled up and he said he knew that I was there because he knows my scent.”

Whack said she’d been wearing the same Chanel Gabrielle for years and it’s her signature scent.

“I was walking, he was like, ‘I smell Whack. She’s here.’ Then he made his way backstage and he found me,” she recalled.

“Chanel Pit” is one of the songs expected to show up on her new album, which Whack promised is on the way.

“Top of the year, it’s coming.”
