A.J. Croce is currently touring with a very special show. The Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary Tour has him honoring the legacy of his late father, the legendary Jim Croce, performing his dad’s classics along with his own music.

A.J. tells ABC Audio he was hesitant to perform his dad’s songs for almost 25 years of his career, but his perspective eventually changed.

“You know, I started off feeling like there was no integrity in just recording his music or riding his coattails,” he explains. “But as I got older, I saw that there was this, recognized always, there was this love of his music.” He says he realized fans missed and treasured the music.

At A.J.’s shows, fans will hear classics like “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” and “Time in a Bottle,” but A.J. says he’s not a cover band, so he puts his own touch on his dad’s music.

“I felt like the only way this would be really fun was to make the connections between his music, my music and a lot of music that connected us,” he shares.

As for why Jim Croce fans still love his music so much, A.J. says, “I think they’re great songs. I think that they’re pretty timeless.”

“I think that there’s a lot of songs that have humor in them, and he makes heroes out of everyday people,” A.J adds. “And then I think that the more sensitive songs were written by a person who, like a lot of us, has a hard time saying those things in real life but feels them, and had a way to communicate them in lyrics and in his music.”

Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary Tour hits Cincinnati on November 9. A complete list of dates can be found at ajcrocemusic.com.

Paul Russell‘s viral hit “Lil Boo Thang” is climbing the Billboard charts — and oddly enough, it blew up online after he vowed to stop using social media to promote his music.

“I’d told myself I was going to post a lot on social media to promote my music, but it hadn’t been working,” he tells ABC Audio. “So then I decided, forget the promo stuff … I’m just gonna make stuff that, you know, is never going to come out, but it’ll just be fun content.”

But being stressed about “all of the promo stuff,” he says, meant he put on some music to chill out. And the rest, as they say, is history.

“‘Best of My Love‘ came on,” he says, referring to the 1970s #1 hit that “Lil Boo Thang” is based on. “And I was like, ‘Y’know what? I could get the instrumental and just, you know, play around with that and see if there’s anything fun that comes out of it.’ And, you know, that’s what ended up being the little 20-second clip [that went viral].”

Paul thinks the song is a hit because it appeals to fans of all ages. “It’s cool having people who liked the original song also like my song,” he says. “You don’t want them to be like, ‘Man, you ruined it! I’m so mad!’ But people have been super receptive, so I’m loving it.”

Thanks to “Lil Boo Thang,” Paul will appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in a couple weeks. In December he’ll play his first-ever live shows. Is he glad this song is the one that ended up bringing him success?

“I am,” he says. “Because I think it’s a very happy song, in a time when there’s not that much happy music. I’m glad this one worked.”

Fall Out Boy returned in 2023 with So Much (for) Stardust, their first album in five years. As for what’s next for the “Dance, Dance” outfit, bassist Pete Wentz says the wheels are starting to turn.

“There’s potential for us to do the occasional single here and there, but I’ve really been thinking about the next big thing Fall Out Boy does,” Wentz tells NME. “It’s extremely difficult to come up with something that feels new, that also feels clever, that doesn’t feel like it’s chasing something.”

Wentz notes that recording So Much (for) Stardust amid the COVID-19 pandemic gave Fall Out Boy a “new perspective on the band.”

“Whatever comes next, it could go anywhere, but it has to be something that’s a little bit beyond what we’ve done before,” Wentz shares. “It could be a musical, but I don’t think we can just get together in a studio in Los Angeles and follow this record up. That just can’t happen for us to be creatively satisfied.”

As for Fall Out Boy’s concrete upcoming plans, the group will launch a U.S. arena tour in February and is set to headline the U.K.’s 2024 Download Festival in June, which traditionally focuses on metal and hard rock artists.

“So many of the bands who have headlined Download before have been such a big influence on us,” Wentz says. “We grew up watching videos of Metallica playing Donington and most of our band was informed by that era of the band.”

“Headlining a festival for the first time is always a new thing though,” he adds. “We’re not stressed about it, but we want to honor the festival and honor the bands that have played before us.”

At the Country Music Association Awards, which aired live from Nashville on ABC on November 8, Tracy Chapman made history.

Her 1988 song “Fast Car” — turned into a massive country and pop hit this year in a new version by country superstar Luke Combs — was named Song of the Year at the CMAs. That makes Tracy the first Black woman ever to win in this category.

She wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, but she sent a statement, which read, “I’m sorry I couldn’t join you all tonight. It’s truly an honor for my song to be newly recognized after 35 years of its debut. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all of the fans of ‘Fast Car.’”

Luke also won the Single of the Year award for “Fast Car.”

Also on the CMAs, Post Malone made a special appearance, singing with country stars Morgan Wallen and HARDY on a version of the late country star Joe Diffie’s signature song, “Pick Up Man.”

Jelly Roll, who’s been a fixture on both the rock and pop charts recently with his song “Need a Favor,” was named New Artist of the Year at the ceremony.  Also of note: Country star Lainey Wilson was named Entertainer of the Year. She’s the first woman to win what’s considered the CMA’s most prestigious category since Taylor Swift back in 2011.

American Idol judge Luke Bryan co-hosted the telecast with Peyton Manning.

Sia surprised Jax at her wedding last week. The “Chandelier” singer appeared in person to sing an original song Jax wrote about her parents during the father-daughter dance. “I’m still bawling. The songwriter I’ve looked up to my entire life sang my own song at my wedding. I don’t deserve you, @Sia,” Jax wrote on TikTok.

Louisville native Jack Harlow got a shout-out in Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear‘s victory speech after Beshear secured his second term Tuesday. “Tonight Kentucky made a choice. A choice not to move to the right or to the left, but a choice to move forward for every single family,” Beshear said. To really draw the point home, he added, “A choice of Jack Harlow over Sarah Huckabee Sanders.”

The Kid LAROI has surprised fans with the release of his latest track, “What’s the Move? (Feat. Future & Baby Drill).” The collaboration arrives two days before his highly anticipated album The First Time drops on Friday, November 10.
