Remember when Violent Femmes were on ’Sabrina the Teenage Witch’?

We finally have an answer to one of rock’s greatest questions: Why were Violent Femmes on an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch?

If you saw the episode when it originally aired in the ’90s, or perhaps caught a rerun of it later, you were probably confused why the alternative outfit — whose signature song, depending on your interpretation, may not be family-friendly — would’ve guested on the Melissa Joan Hart-starring sitcom. As frontman Gordon Gano tells ABC Audio, you were right to feel that way, as Violent Femmes were not supposed to be the guest stars.

“We were a late substitution,” Gano reveals. “The whole thing had been planned for somebody probably that you would think would make more sense, or you wouldn’t go, ‘That was very strange.’ And they already had the whole script, they had everything done, but whoever the artist or band was, they had to cancel.”

As for who was in that original script, Gano unfortunately doesn’t have an answer.

“If I knew at the time, I have forgotten, or maybe it was somebody I didn’t know, but it would’ve been somebody considered popular,” Gano says. “Even the whole script, in the way in which it was done, makes the Violent Femmes sound more popular than we were at the time, I think.”

What may have been the most confusing part of the episode was that the bully character, Libby, is portrayed as a big fan of Violent Femmes, whose music was catered more to outcasts.

“Maybe, whoever had been planned to do it might’ve made more sense,” Gano says.

He laughs, “I mean, it couldn’t have made less sense.”

Violent Femmes will release a 40th anniversary reissue of their self-titled debut album on December 1.

Waiting eagerly for Carly Pearce‘s fourth album? Fret not, it’s coming soon.

“Well, it’s done. We’re mixing it,” Carly tells ABC Audio. “You’re probably going to get it in the beginning of the year.”

How will Carly’s fresh collection of music differ from 2021’s 29: Written In Stone?

“I feel like 29 gave me the confidence to be as country as I wanted. But this album — I know the title but I can’t say it — solidifies who I am,” she explains.

2024 will be a big year for Carly on both the music and tour fronts. The Kentucky native’s set to open for Tim McGraw on his Standing Room Only Tour, and she’s already looking forward to singing his Faith Hill-assisted duets with him.

“Come on. He already knows that I want to sing them. I’m ready,” says Carly. “I idolized him and Faith. I still do. It’s probably the most starstruck I’ve ever been meeting the two of them. And to now get to be on his tour? He’s such a force, and he has been for decades, which is crazy. Like not years, decades. And that’s goals.”

Carly’s approaching the top 30 on the country charts with her Chris Stapleton-featured single, “We Don’t Fight Anymore.” The track alongside “Country Music Made Me Do It” and “Heels Over Head” serve as previews of her forthcoming album.

After three decades of dropping R&B hits, Brandy makes her holiday music debut with her new album Christmas with Brandy.

On the 11-track project the singer lends her Grammy-winning vocals to beloved holiday classics like “Deck the Halls” and “Jingle Bells” and also offers a selection of fresh originals including the previously released “Christmas Party for Two” and “Christmas Gift” with her daughter, Sy’Rai

Christmas with Brandy precedes the star’s appearance at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as well as the premiere of her accompanying Netflix holiday film Best. Christmas. Ever!

While the holiday album is a first for Brandy, her musical resume boasts a long list of accolades and honors. And, although she’s aware and grateful for the love always shown by fans, Brandy says the nickname often used to describe her — the “vocal bible” — is still, to this day, a humbling honor.

“It’s very humbling and I feel very honored to be just recognized for my craft and all the time and hard work that I’ve put into just music in general,” she told ABC Audio.

Adding that it took a while to get used to the complimentary moniker because “it’s such a big thing to live up to,” Brandy said that over time, she’s grown to appreciate it.

“It just feels good to be loved and appreciated by people that you inspire,” she said.

Christmas with Brandy is available for streaming on major platforms.

Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale reflects on his past feuds with Dave Grohl and Trent Reznor in a new interview with NME.

The tiff with the Nirvana drummer-turned-Foo Fighters frontman sprang from when Grohl wore a T-shirt with Bush’s name that replaced the “s” with a dollar sign.

“The feud was obviously that Bush were doing well, Nirvana were dealing with Kurt [Cobain]’s death,” Rossdale says. “It was seen that there was a second-wave of that style of music [grunge] — and the first wave were mad at us, so it was inevitable, but it didn’t sustain for long.”

Rossdale notes that he and Grohl have long since made up and have bonded over being parents.

“His daughters and my sons ended up going to the same school — like Fiddler on the Roof or something! — so I saw him at school assemblies for around five years,” Rossdale says. “And I’ve recorded in his studio since and he’s been perfectly gracious to me.”

As for Reznor, Rossdale shares, “Me and Trent never used to get along and the other night we went to an immersive theatre dinner.”

“You think: it was so stupid we had these b***** exchanges back in the day,” he says.

Listen to Sting, Santana and Stevie — all on one song

Sting, Carlos Santana and Stevie Wonder have come together to contribute to one song.

It’s called “The More I Love My Life,” and it’s by musician and producer Narada Michael Walden. In addition to producing songs for the likes of Whitney Houston, Steve Winwood, Elton John, Gladys Knight, Mariah Carey, Santana and Aretha Franklin, Walden was the drummer in Journey from 2021 to 2022.

On “The More I Love My Life,” Santana plays guitar, Stevie plays harmonica and Sting trades vocals with Walden, who says the song was “a real joy to put together.”

After I recorded the main parts I asked Carlos to play guitar on it,” says Walden in a statement. “That’s when I got the idea for harmonica, so I asked Stevie Wonder if he would like to play on it.” He adds that he got Sting to sing on the song when he served as musical director for one of the ongoing rainforest benefits concerts Sting organized alongside his wife, Trudie Styler.

The song is included on Walden’s solo album Euphoria, out November 17.

Taylor Swift might grab all the headlines, but when it comes to touring, it’s the legendary rock acts who consistently do great business. That’s why a bunch of them have been nominated for the 2024 Pollstar Awards, which celebrate the biggest touring artists of the year.

Bruce Springsteen and Dead & Company are up for Rock Tour of the Year along with Foo Fighters and Metallica. In the Support/Special Guest of the Year category, Steely Dan‘s opening slot for The Eagles‘ Long Goodbye tour is nominated. Dead & Company member John Mayer‘s solo tour is up for Pop Tour of the Year.

The Residency of the Year category includes Billy Joel‘s Madison Square Garden run, which is closing in 2024 with its 150th show, and U2‘s relatively new residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Billy’s residency partnership with Citibank is also nominated in the category of Brand Partnership/Live Campaign of the Year.

Meanwhile, The Eagles’ tour is up for the all-genre Major Tour of the Year prize, which is the biggest award. However, since they’ll be competing against Taylor’s Eras Tour and Beyoncé‘s Renaissance World Tour, they’ll have some stiff competition.

The winners will be announced at the Pollstar Awards on February 7 in LA.

When the 2024 Grammy nominees were announced Friday, November 10, the list revealed many expected award honors but also some, fans say, that might’ve been missed.

While R&B is represented in three of the top categories: Song, Album and Record of the Year — mostly by way of SZA‘s nine nods — the Recording Academy failed to acknowledge any rap music in the big groups.

Seeing as 2023, also the year of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, saw chart-topping work from Drake21 SavageNasTravis Scott and more, social media users quipped about the awards shows’ snubs when it comes to rap.

Tweets like “Smh. Grammys have never taken hip hop or rap seriously” and “Once again grammys never have respected rap and probably never will” circulated after the announcement.

Now, onto the rappers who were nominated.

For the first time in seven years, Nicki Minaj‘s name is included in the mix. With all three of her nods tied to “Barbie World,” fans aren’t sure a first win, on behalf of newcomer Ice Spice, is the most honorable way to acknowledge the superstar.

As for the dedicated rap categories — Best Performance, Album and Song — Drake & 21, Nas, Scott, Metro BoominKiller MikeLil Uzi VertDoja Cat, Coi Leray, Kendrick Lamar and Black Thought are all up for awards.

Lil Durk scored his fourth nomination: He’s up for Best Melodic Rap Performance with “All My Life,” which also adds to feature J. Cole‘s 16 past nods.

A Best Melodic Rap nod also goes to Burna Boy, who additionally earned recognition for Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Performance and Best Global Music Album.

Travis Barker jams hospital drum session to new baby’s heartbeat

Is Travis Barker ever not drumming? A new TikTok from the blink-182 member and new father suggests that the answer is emphatically no.

The video shows him sitting at a makeshift drum kit in the hospital while playing along to the heartbeat of his newborn baby with Kourtney Kardashian. In the caption, Barker writes, “Practicing to my [baby’s] heartbeat.”

Perhaps the TikTok isn’t too surprising, as drums have been a big part of Barker and Kardashian’s parenthood journey. Kardashian first announced that she was expecting at a June blink-182 concert, during which she held up a sign reading “Travis I’m pregnant” in reference to the “All the Small Things” video. The two later revealed the baby’s gender with Barker playing a literal drum roll.

In fact, it seems the only time Barker wasn’t playing drums was when he left blink’s European tour to return home to Kardashian, who required emergency fetal surgery.

ABC News confirmed with a source close to the situation on November 4 that Barker and Kardashian welcomed their baby boy, their first child together.
