On This Day, Feb. 13, 1950 …

Peter Gabriel was born in Surrey, England. The musician, singer, songwriter, record producer and activist gained fame as the original lead singer of the rock band Genesis and appeared on the band’s first six albums.

He left the group in 1975 and went on to have a hugely successful solo career, releasing his self-titled debut that year, which featured the future classic “Solsbury Hill.”

His fifth studio album, 1986’s So, became his bestselling album, moving over 5 million copies in the U.S. It featured the number one song “Sledgehammer,” as well as songs like “Big Time,” “In Your Eyes,” and “Don’t Give Up” with Kate Bush.

Gabriel is the winner of eight Grammy Awards, as well as 13 MTV Video Music Awards, nine of which went to the video for “Sledgehammer.” He’s also a two-time member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, being inducted in 2010 as a member of Genesis and in 2014 as a solo artist.

Gabriel released his first new album in 20 years, i/o, in 2023, which earned two Grammys for engineering at February’s 67th annual Grammy Awards.

The Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their live collaboration.

The artists will rerelease Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes: Live at the Greek on March 14, featuring a new mix of the album, along with 16 previously unreleased tracks, including “Jams,” a song Page and The Crowes’ Rich Robinson wrote during a soundcheck, as well as behind-the-scenes photos, videos and more.

The 36-track album features performances of both Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin tunes, recorded in October 1999 at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, and August 1999 at New York’s Jones Beach theater.

Page shares that he’s “really looking forward” to the rerelease, noting, “The new mixes capture the collaboration of those historic encounters and provide the full explosive passion and exciting energy of those alchemical moments.”

“The new Live at the Greek box set brings the whole experience of our work with Jimmy into a vibrant, electric, mystical and powerful perspective,” Crowes frontman Chris Robinson adds, with Rich noting, “Going through the shows and putting together the new box set has been such an incredible dive back to that time in our history. It was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill to play these amazing iconic songs with the man who composed them.”

As a preview, two songs from the set have been released, The Crowes tune “No Speak No Slave” and the never-before-released performance of “Bring It On Home,” from Led Zeppelin’s 1969 album Led Zeppelin II.

Both songs are now available via digital outlets.

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes: Live at the Greek will be released in a variety of formats, including a 6-LP box set, and a 3-CD version. All are available for preorder now.

Gloria and the Miami Sound Machine’s hit “Conga,” Santana’s Grammy-winning Supernatural album — the one that features “Smooth” — and Luther’s 1981 debut Never Too Much are some of the eight albums and five singles that will be honored at the Grammy Hall of Fame Gala on May 16 in Beverly Hills.

To be considered for the Grammy Hall of Fame, a recording must be at least 25 years old and “exhibit qualitative or historical significance.”

Other inductees include Cat Stevens‘ 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman, featuring “Wild World” and “Father and Son,” Eddie Floyd‘s soul classic “Knock on Wood” and Jay-Z’s 1996 album Reasonable Doubt.

In a statement, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. says, “Music has the unique power to shape culture and mark moments in time. Each inducted recording reflects that spirit, and we’re excited to celebrate these impactful works, ensuring their legacies continue to inspire generations to come.”

Cyndi Lauper is on tour in the U.K., but she still got the good news Wednesday morning that she’s once again been nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She was first included on the ballot in 2023, but after failing to get in, she’s back on again.

“It was amazing news to wake up to after last night’s show at the O2 in London,” Cyndi says in a statement provided to ABC Audio. “The audience showed me so much love, like all the audiences have all along this, my Farewell Tour.”

“I am so grateful to my fans for my career. From the start, I’ve just wanted to make music that means something to people, that lifts them up and makes them feel seen,” she adds. “This honor, should I get in, is as much for them as it is for me. Thank you, Rock Hall.”

At Cyndi’s concert Tuesday night, she was joined onstage by her friend Boy George of Culture Club to sing her signature tune, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” The two have toured together in the past.

She told George while onstage, “If it wasn’t for you, when you came out looking like you looked, I would have never had the courage to look like I looked!”

Fans can vote for Cyndi via the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Fan Vote, which is open now.

Bad Company is one of the artists nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, and frontman Paul Rodgers is thankful for those he believes made it happen.

“If I were a gambling man, I would wager that Bad Company fans and friends had something to do with this nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” Rodgers tells ABC Audio in a statement. “I’ve been told there has been a movement afoot for some time, and we salute them for their persistence and dedication.”

He adds, “I do hope that the induction happens while Mick Ralphs can experience it too. It would be an honor to join the great company already inducted,” adding a thank-you on behalf of bandmates Ralphs, Simon Kirke and the late Boz Burrell.

Bad Company has been eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 1999. They released their self-titled debut album in 1974. It hit #1 thanks to such classic songs as “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love,” the title track, “Movin’ On” and “Rock Steady.” It went on to be certified five-times Platinum by the RIAA.

This year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class will be announced in April. The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction is set to take place in Los Angeles this fall, although an exact date has yet to be announced.
