Dwayne Johnson says he won’t be returning to the Fast & Furious franchise, despite Vin Diesel’s recent pleas on social media.

Johnson tells CNN that back in June, he told Diesel privately that there was “no chance” he’d return, so he was surprised when Diesel shared an Instagram post in November begging him to come back.

“Vin’s recent public post was an example of his manipulation,” Johnson, who played Luke Hobbs in the series, says. “I didn’t like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker‘s death. Leave them out of it. We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding.”

Johnson adds that his goal was “to end my amazing journey with this incredible Fast & Furious franchise with gratitude and grace” and says “it’s unfortunate that this public dialogue has muddied the waters.”

Still, Johnson says, he wishes his former co-stars and crew member “the best of luck and success in the next chapter.”

In Diesel’s Instagram post on November 7, he wrote, “My little brother Dwayne… the time has come. The world awaits the finale of Fast 10,” adding, “I say this out of love… but you must show up, do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play.”

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut in The Lost Daughter, one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year that’s racking up award nominations left and right.

Maggie tells ABC Audio the movie takes a hard look at a little-shown side of the female psyche and features two mothers acting out in different ways after struggling to live up to expectations.  That experience, says Gyllenhaal, is universal but not explored enough in film.

“Many many women have spent a whole long time watching movies where there was no one for us to immediately identify with,” she explained, adding she wanted the audience to think, “This person doesn’t look exactly like me, but I’m going to find a way in to understand their experience and have it be important to my experience.”

Peter Sarsgaard, Maggie’s husband, who co-stars in the movie, recalled when the audience at the Venice International Film Festival, where the movie premiered globally, praised Maggie’s vision.  “I remember several people who came up to her and they feel that need to say, ‘You did something to me.  I’m thinking.  I’m feeling,'” he said.

Another cast member, Olivia Colman, explained why she jumped at the opportunity to star in the film, saying, “I’ve never seen this woman depicted so honestly before on screen and I wanted to have a crack at it.”

Echoing those remarks was Dakota Johnson, who was interested because the movie explored “an unhappy mother and wife — you’re not supposed to be that.”

“This idea that Nina wanted more for herself and had never really been seen and wasn’t being nourished in her heart and her mind just resonated with me,” she continued. “I found it heartbreaking and so real and so common.”

The Lost Daughter premieres Friday on Netflix.

The Year in Entertainment 2021: The ‘Bachelor’/’Bachelorette’ — Chris Harrison is out; so is Colton Underwood

There was plenty of drama on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette in 2021, which is nothing new to Bachelor Nation. However, the most shocking developments took place behind the cameras.

Longtime Bachelor/Bachelorette host Chris Harrison left the franchise after 19 years.  That development was  followed by season 24 lead Colton Underwood‘s announcement that he was gay.

Harrison’s exit came after a backlash over racially insensitive comments during season 25 of The Bachelor, which starred Matt James, the first Black bachelor. The comments were made after old photos resurfaced online of contestant, and eventual winner, Rachael Kirkconnell attending an “Old South” antebellum plantation-themed party in 2018.

Harrison defended Kirkconnell in an interview with The Bachelorette alum Rachel Lindsay, the first Black bachelorette, saying Rachael was a victim of so-called “cancel culture” and asking for “some grace.” He later apologized. But the damage had been done, and producers showed Harrison the door.  Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe, two former bachelorettes, replaced Harrison for The Bachelorette‘s 17th and 18th seasons.

Meanwhile, the tumultuous relationship between Underwood and Cassie Randolph, who met on season 23 of The Bachelor in 2019, came to a head in October of 2020 when she filed a restraining order against Colton, claiming he was stalking her. Cassie dropped the restraining order a month later.

Then, in April of 2021, Colton came out as gay, telling GMA‘s Robin Roberts, “I’ve ran from myself for a long time. I’ve hated myself for a long time. And I’m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”

Earlier this month, Underwood released a Netflix docuseries, Coming Out Colton. He also introduced fans to his new boyfriend, 39-year-old Jordan C. Brown.

Not only will we likely be getting a season two of Squid Game, we might be getting a season three as well.

The Korea Times reports that the creator of the mega-popular South Korean series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is in talks with Netflix about bringing the show back for two more seasons.

Back in November, Hwang confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s already been plotting out season two.

“I do have a basic storyline for season two — it’s all in my head — and I am currently in the brainstorming stage,” he said. “It will happen, someday, but as for when I cannot tell you the details.”

A Netflix spokesperson told ABC Audio at the time that a second season was “in discussions, but not confirmed yet.”

Since its launch on September 17, Squid Game has become the biggest hit in Netflix’s history in terms of worldwide viewership, and the first Korean-language series to reach the number-one slot on the streaming giant’s charts.

The pandemic already twice postponed actress Sarah Hyland and The Bachelorette alum Wells Adams‘ wedding, but the duo believes 2022 will break the vicious cycle.  Speaking to ABC Audio, the pair discussed what they hope to accomplish in the upcoming year.

“To get married, finally,” Sarah declared in unison with her fiancé.  “That’s a good [resolution.]”

Wells added, “I failed two years in a row on that one, so I’m hoping third time’s the charm.”

Other than taking that long-delayed trip down the aisle, Sarah also hopes to pick up horseback riding.  “I did a job this past spring in Ireland, where I got to ride horses and so I got to actually learn how to properly trot and canter and everything! I would really like to continue that,” the Modern Family alum revealed before admitting,  “I just want to spend more time with animals than people [next year.]”

While Wells admits getting married is his biggest goal for 2022, it’s not the only thing he wants to accomplish.  “I want to be a scratch golfer,” he said.

“I’m close, but not quite there,” Wells admitted, and said pro golfer Max Homa “made fun of my swing a few times — and I don’t blame him for that.”  Despite being roasted by the PGA Tour champ, the reality star expressed, “If I ever get to play in a Pro Am, I want him to be my partner.”

Wells is set to appear in the upcoming LPGA Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida, where he’ll play alongside fellow Bachelor Nation star Ben Higgins in late January.

Sarah hyped the “very exciting” event, because Wells is “playing a golf game that’s televised.” After pausing over saying “golf game,” she grinned, “I’m such a good golf wife — er, fiancée — whatever!”

An old adversary is slithering his way back to the All-Valley Karate Championship in season 4 of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, the wildly popular continuation of the Karate Kid films.

Terry Silver, played by Thomas Ian Griffith, has returned to the franchise after he was last seen tormenting Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso in 1989’s The Karate Kid Part III. Griffith tells ABC Audio it was the story that convinced him to come back.

“You know I had been working as a writer and I wasn’t sure about going back into the whole acting thing to begin with,” Griffith says. “And then once I heard this incredible path they had mapped out from the backstory in Vietnam through what he’s been up to for the last 30 years and how that manifests itself in the show today I’m going ‘oh man, this is like gold!’

This season, Daniel and longtime frenemy Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka, forge an uneasy alliance between their dojos. Macchio says it required some changes on Daniel’s part.

“He lets go of some of his grip on the you know, Miyagi teachings,” Macchio says. “The more he sees Johnny and his daughter Samantha and how they’re interacting/reacting to this is where he loosens that grip and says maybe it’s time to find your own way.”

Cobra Kai has already been greenlit for a season five. So does the cast ever think about the endgame?

“The endgame is, it just keeps getting bigger,” Zabka says. “As far as characters go, hopefully there’s some resolve. I’d like Johnny to find some peace in his life and some love. You know, he was a good kid, he just had a bad teacher!”

Cobra Kai season four debuts Friday on Netflix.

(SPOILERS AHEAD) Star Wars fans get to unwrap a late Christmas gift today: the first episode of The Mandalorian spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+.

Written by The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who brought his boyhood bounty-hunting idol back into the Star Wars universe in The Mandalorian season 2, Temuera Morrison again plays Fett both in flashback and in the present, as he’s trying to rebuild the crime syndicate run by Jabba the Hutt, who was killed by Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi. At his side is Ming-Na Wen‘s master assassin character Fennec Shand, from The Mandalorian.

But grabbing Jabba’s throne does not go unchallenged.  “Lord Fett” is both lauded by by local underworld figures — including Jennifer Beals‘ Garsa Fwip — and also set upon by assassins.

We also learn just how Boba Fett escaped his apparent inglorious end in the belly of a Sarlacc, the giant desert-dwelling creature that ate him in Return of the Jedi. Suffice it to say he was discovered and rescued by Tatooine’s scavengers, the Jawas, who also strip him of his legendary armor suit and hold him captive.

Harvesting water for the Sand People, Boba Fett earns their respect — and presumably his freedom — when he saves one of their own, and himself, from a sand-dwelling alien’s attack.

The second episode of The Book of Boba Fett debuts January 5 on Disney+.
