“Sam Raimi” catfishing scam gets a laugh from his frequent collaborator Bruce Campbell

While celebrity online scams are nothing new, one has gone viral, thanks to its famous subject, original Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi

While most online scams don’t pass the smell test, this one takes the cake.

People have noted getting DMs from somebody claiming to be the filmmaker, making the following pitch, which surfaced in the wake of the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“Hi there it’s Sam Raimi the director here. I’m trying to make spiderman 4 with the doctor strange budget but Kevin Fiegey [sic] has caught on and pulled the funding. Can you send me 1500 in iTunes gift card codes so I can hire Tony [sic] Maguire thanks.”

While the scammer gets credit for knowing Raimi is directing the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he probably should have researched how to spell the name of Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

Oh, and it’s Tobey, not Tony Maguire who played Spidey for Raimi.

Bruce Campbell — who worked frequently with Raimi since 1981’s The Evil Dead and appeared in the director’s Spider-Man films — had a bit of fun with the scam. “Boy, that Sam,” Campbell tweeted with a picture of the phony DM. “Always hitting people up for money.”

Campbell added, “I will chip in, because I love Tony Maguire.”

Following last week’s announcement that the 94th Annual Academy Awards telecast will have a host for the first time since 2018, a number of names have been floated as hypothetical candidates and, recently, Amy Poehler was asked if she had any interest in accepting the gig.

Poehler, a four-time Golden Globes co-host along with her friend and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey, told Variety how she’d feel putting all that experience to use on the Oscars.

“Oh, I think that’s a different deal,” she said. “It’s an interesting time. So again, who knows what any of that stuff will…Everything feels like it’s truly in flux in every way.”

“I’m open to all things,” she continued. “I try to keep an open mind to all things.”

The 50-year-old Parks and Recreation vet and Making It star is currently directing the documentary Lucy and Desi, which explores the unlikely rise to fame and enduring legacy of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, whose groundbreaking sitcom I Love Lucy revolutionized the genre.

Poehler says the goal of the doc was to tell a love story.

“So much is made of their work and comedy, and it should be,” she says. “But I also think it is also an equal triumph to have a relationship that was the kind that they had. It is hard to maintain a working relationship, as well as a relationship with someone you love and is your partner in raising kids.”

Poehler has two children with ex-husband Will Arnett; the couple divorced in 2016, but amicably co-parent sons Archie Arnett, 13, and Abel Arnett, 11.

Lucy and Desi will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday.

The new series Single Drunk Female makes its debut tonight on Freeform, telling the story of Samantha Fink, a late 20s alcoholic realizing things are spiraling out of control.

Sofia Black-D’Elia plays Sam in the series and tells ABC Audio that the show is highly relatable, even if you’re not a late-20s alcoholic from Boston.

“We are all touched by addiction in some way or another,” she says. “We all sort of know somebody or are that person…So it’s sort of impossible to not relate to some part of this story.”

For Black D’Elia, the part of Sam’s journey that she relates to is “when you realize that you’ve spent most of your 20s thinking you know who you are, and you were wrong and you don’t really know anything and you kind of have to start over.”

The creator of Single Drunk FemaleSimone Finch, also relates to the titular character and even admits, “I think she is me, but me when I was an alcoholic.”

“Just kidding, I’m still an alcoholic,” Finch jokes. “But when I came into AA at 28, is sort of Sam — they’re very similar, I would say.”

While alcoholism doesn’t necessarily sound like the premise for a comedy, executive producer Daisy Gardner would beg to differ.

“The darkest moments of my life are also the moments that I laugh the hardest,” she explains. “Like, when stuff goes so awry and is so terrible, just something ridiculous will happen. And that’s truly funny to me.”

Starz releases trailer for sixth season of ‘Outlander’
Starz

After a Christmas Day sneak peek of the show’s return on March 6, Starz has dropped a new trailer for the sixth season of its time-skipping romantic drama Outlander.

“I cannot be two things at once Claire,” Sam Heughan‘s Jamie tells his wife, played by Caitríona Balfe. “A rebel, a loyalist, an agent for the crown and an enemy of the king. Claire replies, “You can’t live your life afraid of being who you are.”

Based on author Diana Gabaldon‘s sixth book in her series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Starz teases the upcoming installment, “The last time we saw Claire and Jamie, Claire had just escaped a violent encounter with Lionel Brown and returned to Fraser’s Ridge….The sixth season of Outlander sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America.”

The trailer shows colonists going to arms, and establishing alliances with Native Americans, with the threat of the Redcoats closing in.

The network’s announcement continues, “Establishing a home in the New World is by no means an easy task, particularly in the wild backcountry of North Carolina — and perhaps most significantly — during a period of dramatic political upheaval. The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which — as Claire knows all too well — is unwittingly marching towards Revolution.”

The ninth book in Gabaldon’s Outlander series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, debuted in November.

Amazon Studios

Amazon has dropped a new video branding its anticipated J.R.R. Tolkien-based series with an official title: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The multi-season series, costing a reported $465 million — the most expensive ever made — will tell the tales that happened before Frodo trekked to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring, as seen in Peter Jackson‘s Oscar winning Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Quoting Tolkien’s words, a female voice can be heard, as molten metal is poured into a mold.

Instead of forging the rings, in the teaser, the metal forms reveal the series’ title.

“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky. Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone. Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”

For the uninitiated, the Rings were forged by the Dark Lord Sauron, playing the long game to enslave the world via its varied races. His One Ring, later entrusted to Frodo, is described in the portion of the passage the teaser omits: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them…”

Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said in a statement, “…The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.”

“Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring, but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”

The series debuts globally September 2.

The cause of death of the late Sidney Poitier has been revealed. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that the Academy Award winner passed away on January 6 from a combination of cardiopulmonary failure, prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s dementia, according to Deadline.

As previously reported, Broadway theaters in New York City will dim their lights Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. in tribute to the iconic actor. Poitier made his debut on the Great White Way 75 years ago in an all-Black revival of Lysistrata, and earned a Best Actor Tony nomination for the role of Walter Lee Younger in Lorraine Hansberry‘s groundbreaking drama A Raisin in the Sun.

One of Poitier’s best friends, Harry Belafonte, will be honored at an all-star 95th birthday tribute on March 1 in Manhattan. John Legend, Laurence Fishburne, Doug E. Fresh, Danny Glover, Lenny Kravitz, Q-Tip, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Alfre Woodward are among the confirmed participants. The event will raise funds for Sankofa.org, the social justice organization Belafonte co-founded ten years ago.

“I am honored that so many are coming together to celebrate my birthday, life, and legacy,” the Oscar, Grammy and Emmy winner said in a statement. “I founded Sankofa.org alongside my daughter Gina and Raoul Roach to create additional space for artists and allies to join force to garner an artistic approach to the needs of our disenfranchised communities… to use art as a tool to educate messages of hope and to encourage and energize the public to become engaged.”

Finally, Spike Lee will receive the lifetime achievement award for distinguished achievement in motion picture direction from the Directors Guild of America, Variety reports. The Do The Right Thing director will be honored at the DGA’s 74th annual awards ceremony on March 12.

‘Book of Boba Fett’ co-star Rory Ross on living out his lifelong dream of being in that galaxy far, far away

Lucasfilm

Actor Rory Ross has been a Star Wars fan since he was six years old, when he spent a month in Iowa Children’s Hospital, battling a rare fungal condition. He tells ABC Audio he calls it “crazy” his life has “come full circle,” with parts in both The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

“That first day [in the hospital] my mom [brought me] Star Wars: A New Hope,” he explains. “It was my first introduction into Star Wars. And then as I stayed in the hospital…seeing Luke’s journey, it gave me the hope and inspiration…that I was going to be OK.”

He adds, “And…even at such a young age, I was sort of like, ‘I don’t know what to do with my life, but whatever it is, I want to bring hope and inspiration to people just like Luke did for me.'”

In The Book of Boba Fett, Ross played one of the desert planet Tatooine’s Tusken Raiders, who save Temuera Morrison‘s Fett, and allow him to join their tribe. It showed a different side of the Sand People — after all, in the movies, they mug Luke Skywalker in A New Hope, and murder Anakin’s mother in Attack of the Clones

“When we saw The Tuskens in A New Hope, we just unfortunately saw them as kind of beasts, we thought like, you know, that’s all they are,” Ross says.

“But with The Book of Boba Fett, it really does humanize Tuskens. It really…shows their society, their culture and how, just like with humans, each tribe or each person, even from that tribe, can be very different.”

Unfortunately, the tribe that rescued Boba meets a grisly end in the third episode, setting the former bounty hunter on a mission of revenge. However, before he does, he mourns his new family.

“That was sad,” Ross says of seeing the aftermath of his tribe’s slaughter at the hands of a speeder bike gang. “I wish they would have let that draw out a little bit more in terms of the emotional connection there. But man, yeah, seeing Boba crying, it’s a heartfelt moment.”

He adds, “It was really cool to be able to live that.”

A new episode of The Book of Boba Fett dropped today on Disney+.
