Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at age 96.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” read the brief announcement on the Royal Family’s official Twitter.

About a half-hour later, King Charles, as he is now officially known, also issued a statement on the Royal Family’s official Twitter. Titled “A Statement from His Majesty the King at the Time of The Queen’s Death,” it reads: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.  I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

The queen was preceded in death by her husband of more than 70 years, Prince Philip, who died April 9, 2021, at the age of 99.

Queen Elizabeth is survived by her three sons, Charles, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward; one daughter, Princess Anne; eight grandchildren, Princes William and Harry of Wales, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York, and Peter and Zara Phillips, as well as Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.

Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son, Charles, will officially succeed her as king at a date to be determined, though with his mother’s passing, he is now formally known as King Charles. His wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is now queen consort, a title that Queen Elizabeth requested Camilla be granted at the time of her Platinum Jubilee celebration earlier this year.

Charles’s eldest son, Prince William, is now heir to the throne.

In June, the queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne. She attended just three events during the four-day celebration due to what Buckingham Palace described at the time as “some discomfort.” The previous October, she’d been hospitalized overnight for what Buckingham Palace described as “preliminary investigations.” She also tested positive for COVID-19 in February but experienced only “mild cold-like symptoms” as a result of the virus, according to the palace. Two months later, in April, the queen celebrated her 96th birthday at Sandringham, her country estate in Norfolk.

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in London on April 21, 1926, a granddaughter of King George V and the first child of Prince Albert, the Duke of York, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, a daughter of Scottish nobility. The family’s lives changed in 1936, when King George V died and his eldest son became King Edward VIII.

Edward VIII soon famously began a relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The romance triggered a constitutional crisis that ended with Edward giving up the throne to marry Simpson. Elizabeth’s father, Albert, adopted his father’s name and became King George VI — leaving 10-year-old Elizabeth, his eldest daughter, as heir to the throne.

When her father died on February 6, 1952, after years of declining health, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the British throne at age 25; some Britons were so thrilled by the young queen they declared it was a second “Elizabethan Age.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s reign spanned 14 U.S. American presidents and just as many British prime ministers. Along the way, she proved herself a savvy stateswoman and a constant leader on the world stage. She traveled on more than 271 state visits during her reign and was sometimes the only woman on the stage with world leaders. She always stayed mum on her personal political opinions, demonstrating her mastery of “soft diplomacy.”

As recently as June 2021, Queen Elizabeth II met with world leaders at a Group of 7 summit meeting in Cornwall, and hosted President Biden and first lady Jill Biden at Windsor Castle afterward.

In addition to being sovereign of the United Kingdom and 15 Commonwealth realms, the Queen was also the head of the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of 54 independent countries. During her reign, she visited nearly every country in the Commonwealth — missing only Cameroon and Rwanda — and made many repeat visits, according to the royal family’s official website.

As popular as she was, the Queen weathered particularly harsh scrutiny over her alleged poor treatment of Princess Diana, whom then-32-year-old Prince Charles married in 1981, when the former Diana Spencer was 25. Diana later accused Charles of having an affair with his now-wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, while Diana by all accounts had a hard time adjusting to the pressures of royal life, including merciless hounding by the press, and felt that she received little support from Buckingham Palace.

Diana and Charles’ divorce was finalized in August, 1996. Just one year later, on August 31, 1997, Diana died at age 36 following a car crash in the Pont D’Alma Bridge in Paris during which her car, in which she was traveling with her romantic partner, Dodi Fayed, was pursued by paparazzi.

Much beloved the world over, Diana’s death plunged Britons into grief that soon turned to anger when the Queen was absent during public tributes and made no official statement of her own. Facing increasing public criticism, Elizabeth ultimately returned to London from Balmoral Castle, where she and Prince Philip had been when the accident occurred, along with Diana’s two sons. The Queen delivered an address to the nation praising her former daughter-in-law. At Diana’s funeral procession, Queen Elizabeth II was seen bowing as the cortege passed by.

If tradition is observed, Queen Elizabeth II’s death will be followed by ten days of official national mourning before her funeral is held at Westminster Abbey, in London. Her remains will be interred at Windsor Castle.

Former Smash star Megan Hilty took to Instagram to pay tribute to her family members who were killed in a plane crash on Sunday.

“On Sunday afternoon, a small float plane crashed into Puget Sound off the coast of Whidbey Island. My beloved sister Lauren, brother-in-law Ross and baby nephew Remy were on that plane,” began the 41-year-old star.

“To make this news even more devastating, my sister was eight months pregnant and we were expecting to welcome baby boy Luca into the world next month,” she added.

Hilty, who posted Wednesday evening, called the last three days, “the worst of our lives.”

“There are truly no words to appropriately convey the depth of our grief,” she wrote, adding , “The last thing I wanted to do was acknowledge this painful family tragedy publicly.” However, she said she wanted to clear up that several news outlets reported her “sweet nephew” Remy was female, and “some haven’t even mentioned baby Luca.”

The actress also explained that the family had a sole surviving member. “Lauren and Ross left behind my niece who we are all holding in our hearts,” Megan said, noting, “Thankfully, she was not on the plane and we ask that her name and personal information be kept private as she is a minor.”

The actress closed by thanking fans and others for, “the outpouring of love and support” that, “has meant so much to everyone in our family.”

“It has been so comforting to know just how loved Lauren, Ross, Remy and Luca truly are,” she commented.

The crash of the de Havilland DHC-3 Turbine Otter into Washington State’s Puget Sound took the lives of 10 people in total.

Growing up isn’t easy these days, given the state of the world and the pressures of social media. But there’s still hope: just watch Disney+’s new docuseries Growing Up.

It follows the stories of 11 “heroes,” aged 18 to 22, focusing on how they’ve been able to thrive despite obstacles like disability, struggles with sexual and gender identity, racism, homelessness and body-shaming. Executive producer and Captain Marvel star Brie Larson tells ABC Audio about the challenges of making Growing Up.

“It was a pretty long process in terms of narrowing it down to these 10 stories and 11 heroes, and part of that was because these are young people and we need to protect them at all costs,” Larson explains.

The Oscar winner notes, “You’re going through and making sure that they were ready to do this, ready to tell their story, ready to be on the public stage. And so that was a really important process, so that everybody felt safe and ready all the way through.”

Larson directed the only episode to feature two “heroes”: Clare and Isabel, best friends who successfully lobbied the Pennsylvania state government to provide free menstrual products to schools statewide. Larson was drawn to that episode because, she reveals, “The inception of the series began with my own shames. One of them was around menstruation and my fears around menstruation.”

Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi directs the episode about Sofia, a young Black woman who struggles with imposter syndrome as a self-proclaimed “math and science nerd.”

Shahidi tells ABC Audio that she identified with Sofia’s story, so the topic “came out of that so naturally — imposter syndrome and discussing the importance of underrepresented voices in these spaces that are led by dominant culture and how much we have to offer the world.”

Start your engines! More Cars stories hit Disney+ today — nine mini episodes of Cars on the Road, featuring Pixar favorites Mater and Lightning McQueen.

Larry the Cable Guy is the voice of Mater, and tells ABC Audio the plot is simple: “Mater is going to see his sister and McQueen’s with him and we got nine awesome adventures.

“If you told me to pick my favorite, I couldn’t do it because I swear they’re all really good,” he continues. “The writing on this is so good. I just had to show up and bring life to the character. And man, it’s funny. I love it. It’s one of my favorite things that we did.”

That’s not surprising, considering the 59-year-old comedian loves road trips.

“My favorite part of a road trip is you’re with people that you love,” he explains. “You’re with people you have a good time with. And it’s just you out on the road and there’s you got no, you don’t have any outside intrusions.”

Marc Sondheimer, one of the series producers, says the series is all about “the friendship and the connection and the kind of the bumps and bruises that you go through all along the way.”

And those, says Sondheimer, “are part of life and those are part of living. And at the end of the day, when you look back on it, that’s part of what made you who you are.”

“…I think that going on a road trip with these two characters and letting them kind of go through all that, but then reconnect and find that friendship and realize how much they love each other,” he adds.

HBO Max

HBO Max has renewed its second series in the Pretty Little Liars franchise for a second season. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin launched its 10-episode first season in July, and it didn’t take the streamer long to re-up.

“We are so proud of the incredible response both critically and from fans that Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin has received,” said Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content, in a statement.

“Viewers have embraced our new generation of Liars, and Roberto and Lindsay’s brilliantly dark, horror-fueled take on this iconic franchise,” she said of series creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon, enthusing the streamer is “thrilled” to continue the Liars legacy.

Original Sin is set 20 years before the events of its predecessor, which starred Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell.

In the first season of the follow-up series, characters played by Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria Simone and Malia Pyles are “tormented by an unknown assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago … as well as their own.”

The producers of The Jennifer Hudson Show have revealed the guests for the first week of the EGOT winner’s forthcoming talk show.

As reported, J Hud will reunite with her former American Idol host Simon Cowell for the first installment of the syndicated program, airing on her 41st birthday, Monday, September 12.

However, it has just been announced that NBA legend Magic Johnson will grace the second episode on September 13, as will country star Mickey Guyton, who will also perform.

September 14 will see comic and Insecure star Yvonne Orji join the newly minted talk show host; September 15 will feature Emmy-wining Ted Lasso lead and Hocus Pocus 2 star Hannah Waddingham; and the first week will wrap up with The Woman King lead Viola Davis.

Incidentally, Hudson only has one trophy on Davis in the EGOT category; the Fences actress has an Emmy, an Oscar and a Tony Award, but — as of yet — no Grammy on her mantel.

The Walking (Almost) Dead: Norman Reedus details “scary” injury that sidelined him from show
AMC/Jace Downs

As reported in March, Norman Reedus suffered a concussion during a mishap on the Georgia set of The Walking Dead.

To Entertainment Weekly, however, the actor revealed the injury was more serious than previously thought.

“Oh dude, that was horrible,” Reedus explains. “That whole ordeal for me personally was terrifying. I thought I was going to die.”

The fan favorite, who plays Daryl Dixon on the show, explains, “It was very serious. It was scary. I’ve been hit in the face and the head a million times. I’ve gone through car windows, but that one rung my bell.”

The “through car windows” refers to a “gnarly” car crash Reedus was involved in, which left him with a titanium eye socket. His previous injuries impacted his recovery from the March mishap, he reasons.

“I had a neurologist … I had a security guard in the driveway, just in case. I was holding onto the walls walking through the rooms. It was nuts.”

The actor explained he already suffered from headaches from the car wreck and learned some coping mechanisms, like avoiding light.

“You download every calming app you can possibly find, you’re listening to crickets on your phone, and waterfalls, but then you have the ringer off so nobody can really get in touch with you because they’re like, ‘Do not answer your phone. Do not watch television. Just sit in the dark.'”

Reedus explained that to add insult to his most recent injury, he felt guilty that the on-set accident held up production of the AMC show’s final season — the finale of which will air November 20.
