Fletch is back, on screens big and small! The bumbling but talented investigative reporter made famous on film by Chevy Chase in the 80s is now reimagined by Jon Hamm, in Confess, Fletch out today in select theaters and video on demand.

Hamm tells ABC Audio that as much as he loved the original, the new version “was about redefining it and coming into it with fresh eyes.”

“[It was] really getting back to the source material of the book and understanding that all of the things that Chevy brought to it in the first film are very redolent of Chevy and very redolent of the 80s as well,” he continues. “So we wanted to make a movie that was much more about current times.”

Specifically, adds Confess, Fletch writer and director Greg Mottola, “There’s a certain, you know, bit of satire about the world we live in today and white privilege and influencers and tone deaf privilege behavior”.

As for any chance of a cameo from Chevy, Mottola admits “There’s a part of me that was very, very tempted to beg him to be involved because I’m such a fan.”

“But ultimately, I thought, you know, that movie is really quite perfect for what it is and it’s out there,” he continues. “And if anyone hasn’t watched it, they should because it’s great. And, you know, we just decided not to make a nostalgia thing.”

Roy Wood Jr., who plays a detective investigating Fletch for murder, loved the original movie, and 80s comedy in general, explaining, “I’m 43, so that was essentially my comedic foundation, was the Fletch stuff, the Zucker brothers, Martin Short and Steve MartinEddie Murphy of course, like those things were all large and big.”

Oprah Winfrey is paying tribute to the late Sidney Poitier as the producer of the new documentary Sidney, which premiered September 10 at the Toronto Film Festival.

Winfrey was a close friend of the iconic actor who became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for best actor in 1964 for his role in Lilies of the Field.

“I learned from watching him, Maya Angelou, and Quincy Jones what it means to be a real star. The bigger the star, the more humble you are with everyone else,” Oprah told BET.

“I’ve seen nothing but humility in his personal and professional life. I’ve learned to ground myself with everything around me because he was my counsel, friend and advisor,” she added. “He was a steady force of humility and integrity.”

Working with director Reginald Hudlin, the 19-time Emmy winner says her goal for the documentary is for the public “to see the best of what it means to be a real man and what the measure of a man is.”

“To this day, Poitier’s daughters still see him as a dad because he had great stories to tell them and gathered them as a family unit,” Oprah continued. “Reginald and I wanted audiences to see their hope and possibility through the light of Sidney Poitier’s magnificent life.”

Sidney features interviews with Denzel Washington, Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones, Halle Berry, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Spike Lee, Morgan Freeman and many more.

The documentary will be shown in select theaters and will debut on Apple TV+ Friday, September 23.

While both stars are officially mum, Blake Lively let her apparent baby bump speak for itself at a red carpet event Wednesday: It appears she and hubby Ryan Reynolds are expecting their fourth child.

While reps for the parents of daughters James, 7, Inez, 5, and Betty, 2, haven’t answered ABC News’ request for comment, Lively’s appearance caused a stir while she was working the carpet at the 10th annual Forbes Power Women’s Summit in New York City.

Lively literally couldn’t hide the good news in the sequined, cream-colored minidress she wore as she posed for pictures at the event; she smiled atop sky-high matching platform heels, to boot.

Two weeks ago, Lively turned 35, an occasion Reynolds marked with a sweet Instagram post featuring a throwback photo of their 2012 wedding. The Deadpool star declared, “You’re spectacular. I’m not sure if you were born or invented. Also, thank you for urging me to leave the house every now and again.”

‘Star Wars: Rogue Squadron’ shot down from Disney’s schedule

Lucasfilm

In a move that’s not surprising, considering the history of the project, Disney has removed Wonder Woman movie director Patty Jenkins‘ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron from its release schedule.

The film was initially announced back in 2020, with Jenkins explaining in a short film that the movie about the legendary Rebel fliers will be a tribute to her late military pilot father.

“When he lost his life in service to this country, it ignited a desire in me to turn all that tragedy and thrill into one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time,” Jenkins said.

In 2021, Jenkins’ own schedule was to blame for the movie’s start being bumped from the Disney schedule. However, some outlets said creative differences behind the scenes were actually at fault.

Rogue Squadron would have been the next big-screen Star Wars project for Disney-owned Lucasfilm since 2019’s Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker and would have made Jenkins the first woman to direct a big-screen Star Wars film.

Other just-announced Disney scheduling moves were less potentially dramatic: The ride-based movie The Haunted Mansion starring Ahsoka‘s Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVitoLaKeith Stanfield and Jamie Lee Curtis will now open August 11, 2023, instead of March 10.

Other D23-announced titles were also given official release dates Thursday: Pixar’s Elio will open March 1, 2024. Disney’s live-action Snow White, starring Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler, will open March 22, 2024; Inside Out 2 from Pixar will open June 14 of that year, and the Lion King prequel Mufasa: The King is slated to open July 5, 2024.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Tubi to debut Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial movie on September 30

Tubi to debut Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial movie on September 30

ABC Audio has confirmed that the headline-making defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard, has been made into an original movie for the Fox-owned Tubi streaming platform.

Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial will star Mark Hapka as Depp and Megan Davis as Heard. It’s slated to debut Friday, September 30.

Station 19 star Melissa Marty will play Depp’s tenacious — and ultimately victorious — lawyer Camille Vasquez; Law & Order True Crime‘s Mary Carrig joins for the defense as Heard’s attorney Elaine Bredehoft.

“‘Hot Take‘ [is] in the title for a reason,” explained Adam Lewinson, chief content officer at Tubi, in the announcement. “With our partners at MarVista, this Tubi Original was fast-tracked into production to capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer.”

In June, a Virginia jury agreed with the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s legal team that there was “clear and convincing evidence” Heard had defamed him in a Washington Post op-ed in which she described being the victim of domestic and sexual abuse without naming him.

Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, but the latter was capped to $350,000 due to Virginia law.

Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages for statements made by Depp’s former attorney, but was awarded no punitive damages.

Anne Heche‘s new memoir, Call Me Anne, will be released in January, about five months after she died following a fiery car accident in Los Angeles.

Publisher’s Weekly reports Heche had presented a manuscript to Start Publishing in May, and the book will be released by its Viva Editions imprint.

Start President Jarred Weisfeld explained the company is working with Heche’s estate to finish the book, saying, “Anne was an inspiration to the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. This book deserves to be read by all of her fans.”

He added, “We are grateful to have the opportunity to share her message with the world. While we are very sad that Anne isn’t here to see the book be published we know it’s what she would have wanted.”

Heche’s previous memoir, Call Me Crazy, was a 2001 bestseller in which she detailed her struggles with mental health and overcoming sexual abuse in her family. The book has been out of print, but interest in it grew after her death at 53.

Call Me Anne is being billed as a sequel to the former book, containing “personal anecdotes of her rise to fame: how Harrison Ford became her on-set mentor, her relationship with Ellen Degeneres, her encounter with Harvey Weinstein, her history of childhood sexual abuse, her relationship with God [and] her journey to love herself.”

Heche’s partner on the Better Together with Ann and Heather podcast, Heather Duffy, reportedly wrote an epilogue to the new book, explaining, “[Heche’s] wish was that this book could help others get to the other side of pain and learn about her philosophy, which allowed her to remain in a life where she woke up each day looking for opportunities to find joy and spread kindness.”

ABC Audio has confirmed that Ridley Scott, Oscar-winning filmmaker and the director of 1982’s Blade Runner, is bringing a sequel series to Amazon Prime.

Blade Runner 2099 will be a follow-up to Denis Villenueve‘s acclaimed 2017 film Blade Runner 2049, which Scott produced and which featured Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto, as well as Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard from Scott’s groundbreaking 1982 original film.

Based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, 1982’s Blade Runner was set in the dystopian future of 2019 Los Angeles, with Ford’s character, an investigator known as Blade Runner, tasked with hunting down a rogue band of artificial humans known as replicants.

In a statement, Vernon Sanders, head of global television, Amazon Studios, noted, “The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re…honored to be able to present this continuation of the…franchise.”

Sanders said he’s “confident…Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

An anime series set in the same universe, Blade Runner: Black Lotus debuted last year on Adult Swim and the animation hub Crunchyroll, featuring the voice of The Gray Man‘s Jessica Henwick.
