Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish-born actor who played Hagrid, the friendly giant in the Harry Potter films, has died, his reps confirmed.

He was 72.

The star, born Anthony Robert MacMillan, appeared on the big and small screen for decades, having gotten his start in stand-up comedy. Coltrane shifted to television, appearing in shows including Flash Gordon, and the beloved Brit shows Blackadder and Cracker.

Coltrane appeared as a shady Russian arms dealer in a pair of James Bond films with Pierce Brosnan in the lead: Brosnan’s first, the franchise reboot Goldeneye in 1997, and his third 007 film, 1999’s The World is Not Enough.

However, it was playing Rubeus Hagrid in the film adaptations of JK Rowling‘s books, beginning with 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, for which Coltrane is arguably best known. Hagrid’s famous line — “You’re a wizard, ‘arry!” — became a catchphrase for the series. The actor reprised the role for 2019’s Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, a roller coaster attraction at Universal Orlando Resort.

While fans eagerly wait for the fifth season of The Crown, Netflix has revealed new images from the forthcoming season of the Emmy-winning drama.

Tenet star Elizabeth Debicki stuns in her spot-on look as Princess Diana, shown in one image with a cropped bob cut and looking forlorn at a public event. Another shows Diana all smiles and waving from a boat, with her young sons Harry (Teddy Hawley) and William (Timothee Sambor) and her eventual ex-husband, Prince Charles, played by Dominic West.

Imelda Staunton is pictured in another photo as Queen Elizabeth II at a state function beside her husband, Jonathan Pryce‘s Prince Phillip.

The streaming service teases, “As Queen Elizabeth approaches the 40th anniversary of her accession, she reflects on a reign that has encompassed nine prime ministers, the advent of mass television and the twilight of the British Empire. Yet new challenges are on the horizon … a seismic shift in the international order presenting both obstacles and opportunities. Meanwhile, trouble is brewing closer to home.”

The description continues, “Prince Charles pressures his mother to allow him to divorce Diana, presenting a constitutional crisis of the monarchy … [A]s media scrutiny intensifies, Diana decides to take control of her own narrative, breaking with family protocol to publish a book that undermines public support for Charles and exposes the cracks in the House of Windsor.”

The forthcoming season, which drops November 9, also shows the emergence of Khalid Abdalla‘s Dodi Al Fayed, Diana’s well-connected eventual romantic partner, who was killed with her in a car crash on August 31, 1997.

This season also stars Claudia Harrison as Princess Anne, Jonny Lee Miller as PM John Major and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are apparently trying to get their own story straight.

According to Page Six, Netflix and the filmmakers behind the pair’s upcoming streaming documentary “were confused” by apparent “discrepancies” between what they said on camera and Harry’s own words in his upcoming memoir.

A source familiar with the project told the publication, “A lot in the show contradicted what Harry has written, so that was an issue. Then Harry and Meghan made significant requests [to filmmakers] to walk back content they themselves have provided, for their own project.”

It seems the couple wanted to edit out comments they made about Prince William and his wife, Kate, and King Charles and his wife, Camilla, the queen consort.

Juicy.

The docuseries is set to drop in December.

Sister Act 3 is on the way.

Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the original 1992 comedy film, dished the news while appearing on Thursday’s episode of Comedy Central’s Hell of a Week with Charlamagne Tha God.

“Yes, it is happening,” she shared. “You know, it takes everything a very long time, but we should get the script by the end of this month.”

The actor, comedian and television personality went on to reveal who she’d like to cast in the film, naming Keke Palmer, Lizzo and Nicki Minaj.

“I want everybody,” Whoopi said. “I want as many people who want to have some fun, because I really, desperately need to have some fun.”

The news comes almost four years after a third installment was confirmed to be in the works to air on Disney+.

Sister Act burst on to the scene in 1992 and became one of the most successful comedies of the ’90s. Its sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, came a year later.

On Friday, the anticipated based-on-real-life drama Till hits theaters in a limited release.

The film stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother-turned-activist of murdered Chicago teen Emmett Till, who was abducted and brutally killed in Mississippi in 1955 for the “crime” of whistling at a white woman.

The film focuses on how Mamie’s activism after her son’s death galvanized much of the nation, paving the way for the civil rights struggle in the U.S.

Deadwyler told ABC Audio the gravity of the role was not lost on her. “It’s a scary thing to step into this in this role, to step into the truth of Mamie’s humanity,” the actress said. “I keep telling people … it’s not a character, it’s a person, it’s an American truth, it’s a Black American truth.” She adds, “At every step, I wanted to treat it with that kind of gravity.”

Whoopi Goldberg tried to get the film made for decades, and at one point, the EGOT winner wanted to play Till-Mobley herself.

Whoopi instead plays Emmett’s grandmother Alma Carthan in the film.

She explained how thrilling it was for Till to finally get made. “We went to lots … of people saying, ‘Please … this is such an important story.’ And, you know, people were like, ‘Yeah, no, we … know the story and it’s fine.’ And I said, ‘Well, it’s not fine, because it has never been made in 67 years!'”

Whoopi says of Till, “We’re going to tell you the truth. This is like The Diary of Anne Frank. This is the truth. This is what happened. Know it. Recognize it. Don’t think this is a good thing … You want this not to happen again.”

Till opens in wide release on October 28.

‘Rosaline’ stars discuss the film’s comedic take on ‘Romeo and Juliet’

The film Rosaline, out October 14 on Hulu, is a reimaging of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, focusing on the character mentioned in the play as Romeo’s first love.

The character might not be familiar to you, just like it wasn’t for Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Rosaline.

“She’s mentioned and she’s talked about, but it’s not as nothing major,” she explains to ABC Audio. “And so I’m excited that in our movie, we really got to create her world and who she is.”

That’s not the only update to the classic story. Dever notes, “Even the guy that my dad is trying to set me up with…randomly has kind of a Southern accent…it makes no sense within the context of the era, [but] that’s what we’re doing with the story is we’re just having a lot of fun with it.”

Actress Isabelle Merced, who plays Juliet in the movie was also relieved to ditch the Shakespeare-ese.

Admittedly not much of a Shakespeare person, she says, “I wish I was. It’d probably be cool. But no I’m glad we did not have to do all that for this one.”

One of the themes of the movie, according to Dever: love is complicated.

“Sometimes you think you might be in love with somebody, and then it turns out to be either lust or infatuation, or you think that this is the person you are supposed to be and meant to be with for the rest of your life. And that doesn’t quite pan out always,” she says.

Adds Merced, “We have a tendency as Hollywood to represent love as some sort of perfect, unbreakable thing that triumphs above all…I think love’s a little bit more realistic than that…And I think that’s what Rosaline learns [and] what Juliet learns.”

Liam Neeson taken with a ‘Naked Gun’ reboot?

Liam Neeson may soon apply his “particular set of skills” to revive the Naked Gun movie series.

Variety reports that the Irish actor may very well succeed the late Leslie Nielsen in the lead of the slapstick cop films, with Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer co-writing, directing and executive producing the film for Paramount Pictures.

The 70-year-old Neeson has seen a career course change in the past decade or so into an AARP-eligible action hero, starting with 2008’s trilogy-spawning Taken, the man-vs.-wolves thriller The Grey in 2012, and more recently The Marksman and Blacklight.

Earlier this year, he joked to People TV that reviving The Naked Gun could “either finish my career or bring it in another direction,” adding, “I honestly don’t know.”

Spun from the cop-show-spoofing Police Squad! TV show starring Nielsen as bumbling Detective Frank Dreben, 1988’s The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! was a blockbuster and spawned a pair of hit sequels: 1991’s The Naked Gun 2 1⁄2: The Smell of Fear and 1994’s Naked Gun 33 1⁄3: The Final Insult.

Olivia Wilde is addressing the drama behind her recent film Don’t Worry Darling.

In an interview with Elle for the magazine’s 2022 Women in Hollywood November issue, Wilde, who directs and stars in the movie, talked about her “disappointment” over the conversations about the film offscreen instead of the film’s message.

“This film is trying to ask questions, but [it’s], ‘Let’s just focus on this sideshow over here,'” Wilde said.

The film, which came in at #1 its opening weekend in September, has been at the center of tabloid gossip and fan speculation about what happened behind the scenes, including a rumored feud between Wilde and the film’s leading star, Florence Pugh.

“It’s brought my attention to the media and how it pits women against one another,” said Wilde, who praised Pugh’s work in Don’t Worry Darling. “She’s so generous in her acting in every scene. She makes everyone around her better.”

Harry Styles, Chris Pine and Gemma Chan star alongside Pugh and Wilde in Don’t Worry Darling, which is about a picture-perfect 1950s community called Victory, an experimental company town that houses the men who work on a top-secret project. The film’s underlying theme centers on women’s rights and feminism.

Wilde says, “I had no interest in making a feminist parable that was judgy or that defined men as bad and women as good. I was much more interested in that tense space where we recognize our own participation in the system that objectifies us.”

Wilde is one of eight stars featured in Elle for creative and cultural contributions in music, film and television.

Elle‘s 2022 Women in Hollywood November issue hits newsstands on Nov. 1, 2022.
