Jay Leno might need skin grafts to repair the third degree burns he suffered in a car repair accident in his Los Angeles garage on Sunday, but the former Tonight Show host tells TMZ things could have been much worse.
From his hospital bed at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, the 72-year-old comic and avid car collector explained to the gossip site that he was working on his 1907 White steam car when gas from a fuel leak sprayed on his face and hands. A spark touched off an explosion and set him on fire.
However, Leno says his friend and fellow shop worker Dave acted quickly, jumping on him and smothering the flames.
Jay could spend as many as 10 days in the hospital, according to the site.
Lifelong comic book fan James Gunn came to fame when he turned the obscure Marvel team the Guardians of the Galaxy into a household name. And as reported, he’s now in charge of the fate of Warner Bros. Discovery’s deep bench of DC Comics-based heroes.
With that in mind, hopeful fans are eager to see what’s up his sleeve. If a new Instagram post is any hint, it could be Terrific. Specifically, he just posted, without comment, a rendering of the DC hero Mister Terrific.
The character, the second to take that mantle, is otherwise known in the books as Michael Holt, the third-smartest person in the DC Comics universe behind Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor. A polymath, Holt has earned dozens of Ph.Ds and has invented advanced nanotechnology that gives him all manner of nifty powers, all emanating from the black T-shaped face mask bearing the particles.
The character did appear briefly in CW’s so-called “Arrowverse” but remains — as the Guardians once did — relatively obscure to the casual fan.
So is Gunn teasing that Mister Terrific is ready for a close-up? Time will tell.
As one fan put it in reply, “Is teasing us like this one of the perks that comes with being the head of DC?”
Kate Winslet has opened up her heart — and her purse — to come to the rescue of a Scottish family plagued by bills stemming from a 12-year-old girl’s life support equipment.
BBC Scotland reports the family of Freya Hunter was threatened with a massive heating and power bill, thanks to rising home heating fuel and electricity costs. The cerebral palsy patient requires an oxygen generator and other machines to keep her alive.
Her mother Carolynne started a GoFundMe to try to ease the burden on the Tillicoultry family and get the government’s help for others who may be imperiled as winter approaches and U.K. residents potentially face blackouts and bills as high as 73% over normal.
Hunter admitted she already has to go without heat in many rooms in her home just to keep her daughter’s room warm.
Winslet heard the news and kicked in £17,000 — about 20 grand in U.S. dollars — to cover the Hunters’ heating and energy bill for the year. As shocked as Carolynne was, she told the news agency she was even more surprised that the Oscar and Emmy winner got in touch to pass along well wishes.
“When I heard about the money I just burst into tears – I thought it wasn’t even real. I’m still thinking, ‘Is this real?'” she exclaimed.
Hunter also added, “I’m going to be helped but what about everyone else? I wanted the government to pay for it and do the right thing — it shouldn’t have to be a celebrity that steps in.”
The woman whose Mar Vista, California home was set ablaze when Anne Heche‘s car crashed into it last August is now suing the estate of the actress, who perished after the fiery wreck.
Page Six reports Lynne Mishele is seeking $2 million in damages, claiming she and her two dogs were nearly killed when Heche’s blue Mini Cooper “barreled through the front of her house and deep into its interior,” stopping “just feet away” from her, her two dogs, and a turtle.
What’s more, the resulting blaze, which led to the 53-year-old actress’ death, destroyed “an entire life’s worth of her personal possessions” in the home, according to the suit.
The legal filing claims that the “sudden and terrifying blast shook [Mishele] to her core,” and left the woman “traumatized…terrified of walking outside, and, atop that, without a place to live.”
Donny Brasco star Heche was trapped inside the car for 45 minutes as the fire consumed the home, causing the actress smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. She became comatose after being extricated from the wreck and never regained consciousness.
Results from a blood draw completed after the crash showed Heche had narcotics in her system, which was referenced in the suit, according to the publication. The actress had been public during her life about her struggles with sobriety.
Heche was declared brain dead on August 11 and subsequently taken off life support on Sunday, August 14, after some of her organs were harvested for donation.

The show, which wrapped its first season run in September, was Freeform’s least-watched and lowest-rated original series in linear ratings this year. The series also streams on Hulu, though it’s unclear how it fared there. Everything’s Trash starred Robinson as a 30-something podcaster attempting to navigate the messy nuances of life in Brooklyn…
Dancing with the Stars dropped a few bombshells during Monday night’s episode.
The first announcement of the night came from dance pro Whitney Carson, who revealed she’s expecting her second child with husband Carson McAllister. The pair are already parents to two-year-old son Leo.
The dancer, who is paired with Wayne Brady this season, shared, “I’m so excited to finally announce that Carson, Leo and I are expecting baby number two.”
“I’m so blessed. And this felt like a really really good time to share it. And I can finally share it, which is great,” she said.
Then, later in the show, longtime judge Len Goodman announced that this season would be his last.
“It’s been a huge pleasure to be a huge part of such a wonderful show,” he expressed, adding that he wants to spend more time with his grandchildren. “I cannot thank you enough, the DWTS family. It has been such a wonderful experience for me. I’m looking forward to next week’s finale. I’m sure it’s going to be absolutely brilliant.”
Goodman, who’s 78, has been a judge on DWTS since 2005.
Bachelorette Gabby Windey is opening up about her split from Erich Schwer.
During Monday night’s semi-finals episode of Dancing with the Stars, while prepping for her waltz routine to Des’ree‘s “I Am Kissing You” with partner Val Chmerkovskiy, the reality star revealed why it meant so much to her.
“For me, it holds a special place because I did just go through a breakup,” Gabby said. “The end of our relationship happened because we weren’t completely in step and in sync with each other on our common goals or just the way we approach life. We weren’t each other’s best match.”
The 31-year-old went on to share that she looks to her own family as role models for the kind of love she wants in her life.
“I’m just so grateful that my dad and my stepmom encompass so many fundamentals and values that I look for in a relationship, like never placing blame” she told Val. “I want to channel that kind of everlasting love in this dance.”
Gabby and Erich, 29, called it quits earlier this month, just two months after getting engaged on season 19 of The Bachelorette.
The Dutton clan really knows how to gather a herd. Yellowstone‘s double-shot fifth season premiere on Sunday lassoed some 12.1 million viewers when you count both live viewing across Paramount+, Paramount Network, TV Land, CMT and Pop, and those who streamed it the same day.
The numbers for the Kevin Costner-led show were up 52% in the 18-34 demographic from the previous season and up 22% among those 18-49, Paramount Network announced, touting Nielsen numbers.
The premiere of the show saw Costner’s John Dutton being sworn in as governor of Montana and featured a shocking death.
Margot Robbie‘s planned Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been sunk by ABC News’ parent company, Disney, according to the Oscar-nominated actress.
The spin-off would have been an attempt to resurrect the billions-grossing franchise after Disney dropped star Johnny Depp when accusations of domestic abuse were leveled against him by his ex Amber Heard.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool,” Robbie explains of the swashbuckling adventure to Vanity Fair.
With a “but,” she added of Disney, “I guess they don’t want to do it.”
Time will tell if that means the studio is opening the door for a possible return of Jack Sparrow himself, following Depp’s win in his headline-grabbing U.S. defamation case against Heard’s 2018 op-ed, in which she said she had been abused.
However, during the course of the trial, Depp was revealed to have said he’d never reprise the role because of how quickly Disney torpedoed a sixth Pirates movie over Heard’s piece — even for “$300 million and a million alpacas,” to quote the court testimony.
Christina Applegate was seemingly overcome with emotion in Los Angeles Monday, where she unveiled her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Applegate, a breast cancer survivor, went public last August with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis.
The actress’s Married with Children mom, Katey Sagal, and her Married brother, David Faustino, were also there to sing her praises, as was Applegate’s Dead to Me co-star Linda Cardellini.
“Humility, humor, fortitude, grace, bravery. I’ve watched you wear it all,” Sagal said. “To this day, you still call me mommy,” Sagal said to Applegate. “I love you so much, my sweetheart. You’re not alone. We’re all here.”
Later in the ceremony, Sagal helped Applegate to the podium to accept the award and stood with the actress, who now needs a cane to help her walk.
The actress said she remembered being 5 years old and walking the Walk of Fame after seeing Star Wars, exclaiming of the stars on the famous sidewalk: “I effing want one.”
“This day means the world to me,” said Applegate, who admitted she wouldn’t be able to stand for long because of her condition. Barefoot, she quipped, “I have a disease. You didn’t notice I’m not wearing shoes?”
Among those in the industry who showed up to lend their support was Selma Blair, who also has MS.
The 50-year-old actress nearly broke down when she closed by praising her daughter, 11-year-old Sadie Grace LeNoble. “The most important person in this world is my daughter. You are so much more than even you know,” Christina said, her voice shaking with emotion. “You are so beautiful and kind and smart and interesting. I’m blessed every day that I get to wake up and take you to school … thank you for standing by me through all of this.”
