The Brenaissance is here and, according to Brendan Fraser, it’s all due to his journey with fatherhood.
Fraser makes his return to Hollywood in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming drama film The Whale, where he plays a reclusive English teacher trying to reconnect with his daughter.
The actor — who is a father to sons Griffin, 20, Holden, 18, and Leland, 16 – told Entertainment Tonight that the film’s themes of fatherhood are what drew him toward the role.
“I have kids now and that really warrants how I make decisions, what I’m going to do — and, whatever it is that I’m doing, how I feel about what I’m doing,” Fraser said. “Somehow stakes get raised to such a point that something that might seem garden variety or normal takes on much more gravity.”
While Fraser says he spent the first 25 years of his career generating hope and joy from simply the screenplays he read and the characters he played, he now insists it comes from a different place.
“Some alchemy happens when you have kids and suddenly everything clicks,” Fraser said.
The Whale opens in limited release on December 9 and will expand to more theaters on December 21.
There’s a new addition to the 1 billion hours viewed club over on Netflix.

In November, Netflix renewedMonster for two more seasons, guaranteeing the franchise will return with two installments that will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.”

Elliot Page can now add author to his list of accomplishments.
On Monday, the actor revealed that his previously announced memoir, Pageboy, will hit bookstore shelves everywhere on June 6.
Page also posted the book’s cover on Instagram, alongside a caption that detailed his experience in writing the memoir.
“Trans people are facing increasing attacks, from physical violence to the banning of healthcare, and our humanity is regularly ‘debated’ in the media,” Page wrote. “The act of writing, reading, and sharing the multitude of our experiences is an important step in standing up to those who wish to silence and harm us. Books have helped me, saved me even, so I hope this can help someone feel less alone.”
A portrait of Page adorns the memoir’s cover, where he poses in a white tank top and jeans.
“At many points in my life, it felt unbearable to be in front of a camera,” Page wrote. “But making this cover … was a joyful experience that I will never forget.”
Fans of Gabourey Sidibe may have been waiting for an update about a forthcoming wedding, but it turns out she’s already married.
The actress spilled the beans to Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on Live with Kelly and Ryan Monday after being asked about her and husband Brandon Frankel‘s plans for the nuptials.
“The thing about weddings is I don’t like them,” Sidibe replied. “Here’s an example of how much I don’t like them: I’m actually married. We got married over a year ago.”
Sidibe and Frankel announced their engagement in 2020; they got married about four months after the proposal, news the actress first revealed during her Ripa and Seacrest appearance.
“I really don’t like weddings,” continued Sidibe, explaining that her aversion to weddings stems from her wedding-singer mother. Despite that, she’ll soon give in to fulfill her mother-in-law’s desire to attend an official ceremony.
In the meantime, Frankel is just relieved that he “can finally tell the world” about being married.
“SURPRISE! I can finally call her my WIFE publicly! Since @gabby3shabby finally spilled the beans today on Live with Kelly and Ryan- we’ve been MARRIED since March ’21!” he wrote. “So thankful to have found my forever person, my partner-in-crime, and the love of my life.”
“Every day is the best day with you. Nobody I would rather raise cats with and be in bed by a smooth 8pm with. Love you forever,” he went on, to which Sidibe commented, “You can finally wear your ring!”
