The new Apple TV+ series Shrinking is a comedy…about grief.

Jason Segel plays a dad grieving the loss of his wife in show, which is out Friday. Grief might not be the first thing you think of when you think comedy, but Segel tells ABC Audio “those are the kinds of weighty issues that should be explored through comedy.”

“I really don’t want to see a drama about grief. I know what I’m going to get,” he explains. “I’ve just always felt like comedy was a great way into exploring weightier issues.”

Ted Lasso star and writer Brett Goldstein co-created the series and adds that grief is a great, universal, jumping off point.

“I think it’s something that everyone has experienced or is close to,” he shares.

That’s what makes the show so relevant and, although Goldstein didn’t plan it that way, he can understand how it happened.

“Collectively as the world we’ve experienced the trauma of COVID and we’re all trying to come out of that, I can see how this is reflective of the time. And I guess it’s all subconscious in what you’re choosing to create,” he says.

Segel’s character is also psychiatrist who learns how to use his loss to help others, a process he describes a “really clumsy and clunky, but it comes from such love.”

Segel, in the series, shares a practice with two other shrinks, played by Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams. So what was it like working with Ford?

“It’s a dream,” Segel says, adding that Ford was a “consummate professional.”

“And then also, like, selfishly, it is some affirmation that you must be doing okay. Like all of a sudden you’re sitting across from Harrison Ford and you’re like, Oh, I must be doing okay,” he adds.

Fans of the CW DC Comics-based shows Doom Patrol and Titans might have been surprised to find out that the shows won’t be back for fifth seasons, but they might also be surprised to learn that James Gunn didn’t pull the trigger.

The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise writer-director has taken flak online for making some big changes to Warner Bros. Discovery’s superhero universe along with his partner Peter Safran. However, he contends the cancellations weren’t their doing.

One fan of the shows snarked online on Thursday, “With @DCDoomPatrol and @DCTitans officially ending due to the new direction of @JamesGunn and Safran…All the fans can say is good luck. It’s a mighty big hill you have to climb to win the majority of fans over who enjoyed the shows and movies. I’ll be kicking my feet up waiting.”

Gunn set the record straight, explaining, “The decision to end the series precedes us. But I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows.”

With January nearly over, Nielsen is looking back to 2022 and noted Stranger Things was the most-watched show of the year in the U.S.

According to numbers quoted by Variety, Americans took in some 52 billion minutes’ worth of adventures in the Upside Down in 2022, which the trade said was the most of any show since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, when audiences in lockdown binged 57.1 billion minutes of NBC’s The Office.

CBS’ NCIS was the second-most-watched show in the U.S. last year, with 38.1 billion minutes viewed on Netflix in 2022.

Netflix’s cartoon kid show CoComelon pulled in 37.8 billion minutes viewed, strong enough for third place.

Disney+’s Encanto had the honor of being the most-watched streaming movie of last year.

And if you needed convincing that we’re a country of couch potatoes, Nielsen said we watched 19.4 MILLION YEARS’ worth of content last year.

That’s up from the 15 million years’ worth of stuff we watched in 2021.

In a new teaser, HBO revealed its Emmy-magnet drama Succession is coming back March 26. In the preview for the forthcoming fourth season, the Roy siblings appear to be gunning for their dad, Logan, played by Brian Cox.

“This is not getting about getting back at Dad,” Sarah Snook‘s Shiv Roy says to her brother Roman (Kieran Culkin). “But if it hurts him, it doesn’t bother me.”

Later, they’re warned, “You cannot win. Your dad will wash you away!”

HBO teases, “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is complete.”

The network continues, “A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”

(NOTE LANGUAGE) When Kylie Jenner announced that she and Travis Scott rebranded their 11-month-old son, Wolf, as Aire, people on social media had a laugh, particularly when folks pointed out that it means “my penis” in Arabic. “Anyway, I doubt many people have noticed,” Antoinette Lattouf wrote. “After all, Arabic is only spoken by around 415 million people.”

However, Kylie did laugh along with a viral video that also goofed on the name choice.

TikTok user simo_ziqubu played both the roles of Kylie and Scott four days ago, lip-synching to the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender about heroes who possess elemental powers.

The TikTok-er as Kylie rattles through “Water,” “Earth” and “Fire” — all rejected by Travis — until she chooses “Air,” making him sit up at attention.

The video got more than 12.4 million views and earned a pair of “crying laughing” emoji from the real Kylie.

Incidentally, simo_ziqubu posted a follow-up video of himself proudly sashaying around his apartment, with the caption, “How I walk around the house knowing I made Kylie Jenner laugh.”

Michael B. Jordan apparently got carried away with his role in the Creed movies while shooting the promo for the upcoming edition of Saturday Night Live, which he’ll host.

In the promo, released on Wednesday, Jordan is surveying the SNL studio when cast member Michael Longfellow approaches him from behind, startling the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actor. Jordan responds by nailing Longfellow with two hard punches to the face, causing him to scream “Jesus B. Christ!”

Jordan apologizes profusely, blaming it on “muscle memory.”

Longfellow, covering his broken nose, quips, “I can’t have a broken nose. I was hired for my looks, not my talent,” to which Jordan replies, “I know how that feels.”

The two patch things up, after which Jordan gives his fist a stern warning.

Jordan, whose new film Creed III opens March 3, hosts SNL this weekend with musical guest Lil Baby.

Peacock’s ‘Poker Face’ is a nod to classic TV mysteries, says creator Rian Johnson

Knives Out creator Rian Johnson is keeping the mystery alive, with his new show Poker Face out Thursday on Peacock.

The series stars Natasha Lyonne as a woman with a super-tuned b.s. detector, and Johnson tells ABC Audio that though both Poker Face and Knives Out involve solving mysteries, this show is way different than the movies.

“To me it is such a different genre. It’s not a whodunit, it’s a how-catch-em,” he explains. “We show you the killer in the first act, and then it’s tracking them down.”

Ultimately, what Johnson was going for was a classic TV vibe “like the type of TV I grew up watching and loving.”

“And so it was kind of a bit of a throwback to ColumboRockford Files, you know, Magnum P.I., that kind of hour-long show,” he says.

Lyonne’s casting played a role in helping Johnson achieve that vibe, which he compares to Peter Falk‘s role in Columbo.

“I don’t really watch Colombo for the mysteries. I watch it to hang out with Peter Falk every week,” says Johnson. “And so the fact that you want to hang out with Natasha and see her win week to week, I mean, that’s kind of what it’s all about.”

The show is also all about the interesting ways that Lyonne’s character, Charlie Cale, uses her unique talent, which Johnson admits wasn’t an easy task.

“She can detect lies, and figuring out interesting ways of exploring that and figuring out ways of having a detective show where the detective can detect lies and the mystery isn’t over in five minutes, that was an interesting challenge of the whole thing,” he shares.

Poker Face also guest stars Adrien BrodyChloë SevignyJameela JamilJoseph Gordon-Levitt, and more.
