In Brief: ‘She Hulk’ gets a Disney+ debut date, briefly; ‘Doctor Who’ reunion set, and more

We might know the date when She-Hulk, starring Tatiana Maslany, arrives on the Disney+. The streaming service’s U.K. site revealed in a blog post — before quickly deleting it — that the Marvel series arrives August 17, says Collider. The blog post also shared a new synopsis of the series, which read, “This new comedy series sees Bruce Banner help his cousin, Jennifer Walters, when she needs an emergency blood transfusion and guess what? She receives his powers too.” The series also sees Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk and stars Tim Roth as The Abomination. Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News…

Stephen Colbert will make his grand return to The Late Show after experiencing “symptoms consistent with a recurrence of COVID.” On Sunday, Colbert announced on Twitter, “I’m footloose and Covid free! See you tomorrow.” The Late Show‘s Twitter revealed there will be “all-new shows this week” and Monday’s guests will be Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and comedian Judd Apatow. The Late Show airs weekdays at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS…

David Tennant and Catherine Tate are heading back to Doctor Who to mark the series’ 60th anniversary, reports the BBC. Tennant famously played the show’s 10th Doctor and Tate originated the role of Donna Noble, which she played from 2006 until 2010. Tennant’s Doctor tragically parted ways with Tate’s Donna after wiping her memories to save her life. It is not revealed what brings them together again, but showrunner Russell T. Davies teased of their reunion, “The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”…

Steve Martin crashed Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez’s Saturday Night Live hosting debut. He appeared in the skit “Inventor Documentary,” which parodies the invention of the whoopie cushion, which has Martin playing so-called inventor Archie Gizmo. The skit is about Giz discovering what sound works best for his invention, with rejected sounds being a doorbell and cow moo, before he meets Aidy Bryant‘s Dina Beans, who farted every time she sat. Her bad luck also inspired Giz to create other joke devices, like snakes in a can, googly-eyed slinky glasses and the hand buzzer…

Selena Gomez crushed her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live, which saw her flexing her Miley Cyrus impression and leading the audience into an impromptu sing-along to the Barney theme song.

Selena threw some love to her Only Murders in the Building co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin in her opening monologue, joking that she sought the veteran comedians’ advice on how to knock her hosting debut out of the park.

“Steve said, ‘Trust no one,’ and Marty said, ‘I think Steve Martin has been using my credit card,'” she joked. Selena also turned to pal Miley, whom she said was one of her “oldest friends.”

Whipping out a spot-on impression, Selena said Miley told her, “Just be yourself and have fun.” She continued, “I was like, ‘Miley, is that just an excuse for me to do an impression of you on the show?’ And she was like, ‘Hell yeah, I’m Miley Cyrus.'”

Selena also used her monologue as an open casting call for her next significant other because, as she said, “I’ve heard SNL is a great place to find romance.”

“I just want to put it out into the universe that I’m manifesting love. I would like to say that I’m looking for my soulmate, but at this point I will take anyone,” she told the crowd, which led to Kyle Mooney, James Austin Johnson and Punkie Johnson shooting their shot with her.

Selena ended her monologue by leading the audience into a singalong of the Barney theme song.

Post Malone served as the night’s musical guest, performed his song “Cooped Up” and debuting the song “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol,” which will be featured on his forthcoming album, Twelve Carat Toothache.

(NOTE LANGUAGE) When Gwyneth Paltrow‘s lifestyle brand Goop announced the Diapér [Dye-PAIR] — a luxury disposable diaper selling for $150 for a pack of 12 — it raised eyebrows.

Then again, Goop also sells that infamous Gwyneth’s nethers-scented candle for $75, so it also wasn’t exactly a surprise.

However, Paltrow took to Instagram to reveal The Diapér was just a gag, but one with a serious undertone.

Noting that “there was a lot of outrage” when Goop launched the item, Paltrow responds in a video post, “Good. It was designed to pi** us off.” The “outrageous, fake luxury diaper [was] designed to shine a light on an outrageous luxury tax” put on the real thing.

In 33 states, she comments, diapers are taxed as a luxury item. “This leaves one in three families struggling to afford them,” Paltrow says. “While eliminating the diaper tax is not a complete solution, it could allow many families to buy another month’s supply.”

“If it made you mad, good. Help us change the diaper tax,” Paltrow concludes.

True Lies, an adaptation of the 1994 James Cameron-directed film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, is coming to CBS as a series.

The series had been in development for a while, with Cameron producing. Last year, Shameless veteran Steve Howey and forthcoming star of Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk, Ginger Gonzaga, were announced as playing Harry and Helen Tasker, the roles Schwarzenegger and Curtis respectively played in the blockbuster film.

As in the movie, Harry is hiding from his unfulfilled wife his life as secret agent for an independent spy agency. The TV show’s cast also includes Lucas Jaye, Erica Hernandez and Omar Miller.

(NOTE LANGUAGE) Chris Rock says he will eventually address his infamous Oscar night slap at the hands of Will Smith.

“I’m okay, if anybody was wondering,” the 57-year old comedian and actor said during a stand-up performance Thursday evening at London’s Royal Albert Hall, according to U.K. newspaper The Telegraph. He added, “Got most of my hearing back.”

Seemingly confirming earlier reports, Rock apparently won’t address the situation fully for free. He riffed, “Don’t expect me to talk about the bulls***,” noting, “I’ll talk about it at some point…on Netflix.”

“Your tickets were expensive, but not that expensive,” Rock reportedly joked to the U.K. crowd.

The comedian is currently on his Ego Death world tour.

‘Conversations with Friends’ cast talks messy relationships and conversation starters

Enda Bowe/Hulu

Conversations with Friends takes the “it’s complicated” relationship status to a whole new level.

The Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s debut novel, from the same team that brought us 2020’s Normal People, follows the intersecting relationships between four people. Alison Oliver and Sasha Lane play best friends and exes Frances and Bobbi, who become entangled with a married couple, Nick and Melissa, portrayed by Joe Alywn and Jemima Kirke.

“I was really interested in kind of, I guess, the dynamic between these four characters and how, you know, when one shifts how it affects all the others,” Oliver says of what drew her to the story.

It’s a four-way affair of sorts, which Alwyn and Oliver can only describe as “a mess.” “I guess it’s a really productive ‘love mess,’ in a way,” Oliver laughs.

One thing’s for sure — the show is definitely a conversation starter. So what conversations are the cast hoping to spark when people watch?

“I hope maybe they’re, like, sitting with their partner and they’re like, ‘Would you ever…?’ And I just want to see how that one unfolds,” Lane says.

“I would like to see people have the F***, Kill, Marry conversation after they watch this,” Kirke adds, laughing.

Conversations with Friends debuts this Sunday on Hulu.

Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo are set to star in a new comedy series from Disney’s Onyx Collective.

Unprisoned, created by relationship author Tracy McMillan, is inspired by McMillan’s own life. It follows a relationship therapist and single mom, played by Washington, whose life gets thrown for a loop when her father, played by Lindo, gets released from prison and comes to live with her and her teenage son.

Washington and Lindo will also serve as executive producers on the eight-episode series.

“From the moment Tracy McMillan brought this project to [my production company] Simpson Street, we knew that it had the potential to be provocative, groundbreaking and life-affirming,” Washington says in a statement. “I love this show. I love these characters and the stories that they inspire. And I’m extremely excited to be working, once again, with both Onyx Collective and ABC Signature and honored to be collaborating with this talented group of creative partners.”

Washington previously produced the Onyx legal drama Reasonable Doubt.

Unprisoned marks the first scripted comedy series from Onyx. It will be streamed exclusively on Hulu in the U.S.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Apple TV+

Just in time for Friday the 13th, Apple TV+ teases the star-studded animated film Luck. The teaser has Simon Pegg voicing Bob, a black cat who welcomes viewers to the Land of Luck.

It’s here, you see, that luck is partitioned out to our world, both good and bad — but don’t put that on the black cat himself. Bob explains that in his native Scotland, black cats are good luck.

Instead, the magical creatures of Land of Luck work behind the scenes, like the critters in Monsters, Inc., to affect the human world. However, when a human lands there — also a la Monsters, Inc. — things go awry.

Sam, the unluckiest girl in the world, voiced by theater vet Eva Noblezada, accidentally ends up in Luck, with comedic results.

The film, which also stars the voices of Oscar winners Jane Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as The Suicide Squad‘s Flula Borg and Free Guy‘s Lil Rel Howery, debuts August 5 on Apple TV+.
