‘Breeders’ Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard reflect on the show’s legacy

No more breeding for Breeders — the FX comedy about a messy British family just started its final season on FX, streaming next day on Hulu. Before the start of the actors strike, show co-creator and star Martin Freeman told ABC Audio that he learned from his time on The Office — which ran for just two short seasons — and from other short-lived British shows like Fawlty Towers, “Knowing when to get off stage is vital,”

“Even from an egotistical point of view, like even if you want to kind of think about your legacy or what you leave behind, I think you’re more likely to have good favor with people if they still like what you’re doing when you stop doing it,” he adds.

Freeman’s goal was to portray that “the idea of a perfect family doesn’t exist. And the idea of this sort of identikit, lovely, colorful, sunshiny family just is not true. And we know it’s not true. And we’ve always known it’s not true.”

“So let’s make people feel okay about the fact that they come from dysfunctional, weird families,” he continues.”

Freeman says the show has always been about how messy family can be, especially for the kids, explaining, “If you’re a sibling, you have not chosen any of this, right? You haven’t chosen any of it. So it’s hard, you know, but it’s worth the struggle because I think family can be the most beautiful thing in our lives.”

For Daisy Haggard, who plays Aly on the show, “it’s about showing the other side, the real side, of family life, and allowing people to identify with the slightly darker moments rather than feel ashamed. So if the show can do that for people, then I’m delighted.”

Zendaya is paying tribute to her Euphoria co-star Angus Cloud one day after his family confirmed he had died at the age of 25.

The actress, 26, took to Instagram on Tuesday, August 1, writing, “Words are not enough to describe the infinite beauty that is Angus (Conor).”

“I’m so grateful I got the chance to know him in this life, to call him a brother, to see his warm kind eyes and bright smile, or hear his infectious cackle of a laugh (I’m smiling now just thinking of it),” she continued.

She added in part, “I know people use this expression often when talking about folks they love…’they could light up any room they entered’ but boy let me tell you, he was the best at it. I’d like to remember him that way. For all of the boundless light, love and joy he always managed to give us. I’ll cherish every moment.”

Zendaya stars in Euphoria as Rue, a teen struggling with drug addiction and finding her place in the world; Cloud played Fezco, a local drug dealer and Rue’s friend.

Her Euphoria co-star Sydney Sweeney also posted a tribute to Cloud Tuesday, calling it “the hardest thing ive ever had to post.” She said in part, “You will be missed more than you know, but I’m so blessed to have known you in this lifetime, and I’m sure everyone who has ever met you feels the same.”

News of Cloud’s passing came July 31 via a statement obtained by ABC News from his family, who called Angus “an incredible human.”

Cloud’s family said he’d been struggling with the recent loss of his father, stating, “The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend.”

Can’t get enough ‘Barbie’? Get ready for ‘Monopoly: Barbie Edition’
Hasbro

For those who haven’t gotten their fill of Barbie, Hasbro has announced preorders for its forthcoming Monopoly: Barbie Edition.

Coming on the high heels of the record-setting film’s release, the special edition of the beloved board game gets a pink makeover — and the game’s traditional game tokens are getting an upgrade, too.

Gone are the iron, the thimble and the like; in their place, there’s a game piece shaped like Barbie’s head, a puppy, a speedboat, a Dream Car, a roller skate and of course a high-heeled shoe, all done up in “signature Barbie pink.”

The usual “Chance” and “Community Chest” cards are swapped out for “Dream Career” and “Dream Closet” cards, to boot, among other gameplay changes. Players can “purchase famous locations in the Barbie dream world” and “build [their] own DreamHouses,” according to the ad copy.

The game is expected to hit store shelves on October 1, retailing for $24.99.

Family Guy and American Dad creator Seth MacFarlane has donated $1 million to The Entertainment Community Fund, the charity dedicated to actors who are struggling financially.

The organization notes that with the addition of MacFarlane’s gift, the group formerly known as The Actors Fund has raised more than $6.3 million from more than 7,500 donors.

With the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes crippling Hollywood production, there is a growing need to provide.

The Entertainment Community Fund noted in its announcement, “As of July 28, 2023, the Fund has provided more than $2.7 million to more than 1,500 people affected by the current work stoppages.”

The strikes come, of course, just as the industry was finding its footing after the pandemic closures.

It adds, “Thanks to these substantial donations, the Fund is helping film and television workers in need with emergency financial assistance to cover basic living expenses (rent, groceries, health insurance, medical bills, etc.), mental health support and more.”

The organization said other notable donors included: actress and Entertainment Community Fund Chair Annette Bening; former Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron; Rosanne Cash, in memory of her late father, Johnny Cash; Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan; TV producer Greg Berlanti, Michelle Pfeiffer and her TV producer husband, David E. Kelley; Bridgerton and Grey’s Anatomy producing mogul Shonda Rhimes; and Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg and his actress wife, Kate Capshaw.

In a statement, Bening noted the group is “overcome with gratitude,” adding, “Each day, the calls for help increase; these gifts will immediately assist so many in our industry who are still struggling to recover after the pandemic.”

‘Arrow’ vet Stephen Amell catches arrows from fellow SAG-AFTRA actors for saying he “does not support striking”

Actor Stephen Amell, famous from CW’s so-called Arrow-verse of superhero shows and now on the STARZ wrestling show Heels, has taken a heel turn of his own, in the eyes of those supporting the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild strikes.

While speaking at a fan Q&A session at GalaxyCon in Raleigh, North Carolina, over the weekend, Amell was asked about the ongoing Hollywood strikes. According to video at the event, the actor said, “I support my union. I do, and I stand with them,” then added, “I do not support striking. I don’t. I think it’s a reductive negotiating tactic, and I find the entire thing incredibly frustrating.”

The actor who played Oliver Queen/Green Arrow also called the strikes “myopic” because SAG-AFTRA rules specifically forbid actors to promote the shows they’ve worked on.

Amell’s comments drew flak from his fellow actors. Matt Letscher, who played the villain Eobard Thawn/Reverse Flash on the CW show The Flash and others, sniped, “Still waiting on that comprehensive list of totally non-reductive negotiating tactics we get to employ now. Thank god for superheroes!…”

This led one of his followers to snark in reply, “…Reverse Flash was actually a lesser villain than Green Arrow. Who knew????”

Many fans — some struggling actors among them — used a gif from Arrow, with Amell’s own character expressing, “You have failed this city.”

While Amell hasn’t explained his comments on Instagram, followers let him have it there, too, shredding him in the replies to a thank you post to con attendees.

‘Suits’ producer addresses show’s streaming resurgence and the possibility Meghan Markle could return in reboot

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, chances are you’ve seen a trailer for the former USA Network legal drama Suits. Given Nielsen numbers, there’s a better chance you’ve clicked on it, either to rewatch the series that ran from 2011 until 2019 or — more likely — to watch it for the first time.

According to data from the company, it’s currently among the most-watched shows between Netflix and Peacock, with some 3.1 billion viewers across the platforms — a Nielsen record, according to TVLine.

The series was centered on Patrick J. Adams‘ Mike Ross, a brilliant college dropout with a photographic memory who is hired by Gabriel Macht‘s Harvey Specter, an ace attorney in one of New York City’s most prestigious law firms.

Even if you’ve never seen an episode, you probably have heard Meghan Markle was on the show, too. She played paralegal Rachel Zane, leaving two seasons shy of the ninth and final season, which only runs on Peacock.

The show’s executive producer Gene Klein tells TV Line he’s just surprised as anybody about the resurgence.

“I, obviously, had a sense…it would probably get another burst of viewing and that kind of thing, but I did not think this would happen,” he admitted, explaining as the numbers racked up, he texted creator Aaron Korsh, “and it was something on the order of, ‘Holy s***.'”

With reboots all the rage — and considering its streaming resurgence — is a Suits reboot in the offing?

“…I’m expecting a call at some point,” Klein says. “But I’m not aware of any serious conversations,” adding he “wouldn’t be surprised” if that call does come.

However, getting the cast back together might be difficult, he admits, particularly Markle. “I would assume that’s just not possible,” he contends of her return.

Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, have some thrilling news to share — they’re expecting a baby girl!

The couple, who are already doting parents to their adorable 5-year-old daughter Olympia, documented the moment in a YouTube video showcasing the fabulous baby shower-slash-gender reveal party to share the exciting news in style.

Decked out in a lovely pink and white ensemble that showcased her growing baby bump, Serena made it clear that she was firmly “team pink.” In the video posted online, she expressed a hint of nervousness, admitting she had no backup plan in case it turned out to be a boy. But rest assured, it was all pink galore at the celebration!

The outdoor bash was a rainbow of colors, with a stunning balloon arch taking center stage, proudly displaying the sign, “Our Next Great Adventure.” The vibrant ambiance included long white sticks with multi-colored balloon bouquets, imitating trees, and comfy blankets scattered across the lush grounds for guests to relax.

As the party heated up, Ohanian decided to add a dash of fun and surprise. Instead of the usual pink or blue cake, he threw a curveball and opted for a yellow cake, playfully intending to troll Serena and Olympia. But his plan took a hilarious turn when Serena saw the yellow cake and playfully smooshed it into Alexis’ face. Shortly after, drones above spelled out “Girl!”

Amidst cheers, applause, and sheer joy, the family celebrated the upcoming addition to their lives.
