On Friday, Peacock launches The Continental: From the World of John Wick, the prequel series spun off of the movies starring Keanu Reeves‘ titular assassin.

Albert Hughes, who along with his twin brother Allen directed genre classics like Menace II Society and The Book of Eli, went solo in directing two of the series’ three chapters, the first of which is now streaming.

He tells ABC Audio, “There was two projects I was considering. One was very similar to the stuff you’ve seen me and my brother doing the past, you know, social issues, inner city, race, generational trauma.”

He adds, “And then I read this [project] and I go…My gut’s saying, ‘Let’s just go have fun.'”

Colin Woodell plays a younger version of Ian McShane’s Winston, the manager of the infamous hitman hotel. Newcomer Ayomide Adegun plays the younger concierge Charon, who was played in the four Wick movies by the late Lance Reddick.

The roles were “both very difficult to find,” Hughes admits.

“Colin Woodell…this guy has throwback movie star looks, and if you look at a younger Ian McShane, they’re very similar.” Albert adds his skills are “well beyond his years.”

Hughes says another actor nearly was “almost” cast as Charon, “And then I get this call from the casting agent and says, ‘We found this kid in drama school in Wales, and you should see this tape.’ We [watched] like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s him’…And his first scene on set was against Mel Gibson, which I would crumble under that kind of pressure. But he was amazing.”

Of Gibson, who plays the vicious New York Continental manager Cormac, Hughes gushes, “he was just the perfect fit for that role.”

The filmmaker adds, “And sometimes with those type of actors [who] have been around, when they play villains, there’s just something extra that comes out in them.”

SAG-AFTRA backs ‘DWTS’ cast amid pressure from WGA: “They are required to go to work”

Amid pressure from striking writers and picketers gathering outside the Dancing with the Stars rehearsal facilities, SAG-AFTRA is backing the show and its cast members.

“Our members appearing on Dancing with the Stars are working under the Network Code agreement” and “are not in violation of SAG-AFTRA strike rules … we support them in fulfilling their contractual obligations,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement to ABC Audio.

“The program is a SAG-AFTRA non-dramatic production under a separate agreement that is not subject to the union’s strike order, the statement continues. The majority of our members on Dancing with the Stars had contractual obligations to the show prior to the strike. Many are under option agreements that require them to return to the show if the producer exercises their option which the producer has done.”

The statement goes on to explain that its members are also subject to a ‘No Strike Clause’ in the Network Code Collective Bargaining Agreement, which runs through June 30, 2024. This means the performers have agreed not to strike during the term of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“By not showing up to work, our performers can be held in breach of contract and the Union is prohibited from advising them not to work.”

” … We stand with our union siblings across the industry as we also recognize our obligations under federal labor law,” the statement concludes.

On Thursday, September 21, Matt Walsh, one of this year’s celebrity contestants, announced he is pausing his participation in the show in light of the writers strike.

Dancing with the Stars season 32 is still scheduled to premiere Tuesday, September 26, on ABC and Disney+. However, ABC Audio has confirmed the network is making plans to postpone in light of the growing static the celebrities are experiencing.

Investigators have determined a cause of death for Euphoria star Angus Cloud on July 31, and it appears to have been a tragic accident.

A representative for the Alameda County coroner’s office told ABC Audio that the actor’s death on July 21 was caused by “accidental acute intoxication due to combined effects of methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl and benzodiazepines.”

Incidentally, the cause of death is as his mother, Lisa Cloud, suspected.

In the wake of the actor’s death, there was speculation that the 25-year-old may have died by suicide, as he was reportedly distraught about his father’s death.

However, Angus’ mother posted to Facebook on August 4 to say the actor “did not intend to end his life.”

She said that despite the family tragedy, Angus was “joyful,” and “spoke of his intent to help provide for his sisters at college” and help her through the tragedy.

She wrote, “When we hugged goodnight we said how much we loved each other and he said he would see me in the morning. I don’t know if or what he may have put in his body after that. I only know that he put his head on the desk where he was working on art project’s [sic], fell asleep, and didn’t wake up.”

Lisa added, “[W]e may find out that he overdosed accidentally and tragically,” but it remains “abundantly clear that he did not intend to check out of this world.”

The Young and the Restless closed its episode on Thursday, September 21, with a farewell to one of its own, Billy Miller.

The actor, who would have turned 44 last Sunday, reportedly died by suicide on September 15.

In the tribute, he was shown in happier times in four photos that ran at the end of the show, according to Deadline.

Miller won three Daytime Emmys for playing Billy Abbott on Y&R from 2008 to 2014. He also starred on General Hospital and played Marcus Specter, the brother of lead Gabriel Macht‘s Harvey Specter, on Suits.

Patricia Miller, the actor’s mother, had an associate post a statement to social media on Monday, September 18, that revealed Billy’s death resulted from a “long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years.”

She added that “he did everything he could to control the disease. He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life.”

Sofia Vergara stars in and produces Griselda, the Netflix drama that has her playing the savvy and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable drug cartels in history.

A teaser for the six-episode series starring the Modern Family alumna dropped on Thursday, September 21.

The streaming service teases, “In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as ‘the Godmother.'”

If the story rings a bell, Catherine Zeta-Jones played the same person in the 2017 Lifetime movie Cocaine Godmother.

Because of her looks and her gender, the real Griselda was underestimated, demonstrated in a scene in which a fellow dealer asks Vergara, “Who is the one in charge?”

Griselda’s death stare answers his question.

The series from Narcos and Narcos: Mexico showrunner and directing team Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz premieres globally on Netflix on January 25.

Len Goodman may have died in April, but the legacy of the former Dancing with the Stars judge will live on in the show for the forthcoming 32nd season and beyond.

ABC Audio has confirmed that the reality competition show’s ultimate prize, the coveted Mirrorball, will be renamed the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy in honor of the former host.

Goodman, who was also a judge on the British reality competition Strictly Come Dancing, died at 78 years old from bone cancer.

He had stepped down as head judge on Dancing with the Stars in November of 2022 to spend more time with family.

Meanwhile, Matt Walsh, one of this year’s celebrity contestants, has announced he is pausing his participation in the show in light of the writers strike.

Picketers have been gathering at rehearsal facilities for the show.

“I am taking a pause from Dancing with the Stars until an agreement is made with the WGA,” The Hangover veteran began his statement. “I was excited to join the show and did so under the impression that it was not a WGA show and fell under a different agreement. This morning when I was informed by my union, the WGA, that it is considered struck work I walked out of my rehearsal.”

Walsh added, “I have been and will always stand with my union members of the WGA, SAG and DGA. Beyond our union artists, I am sensitive to the many people impacted by the strike and I hope for a speedy and fair resolution, and to one day work again with all the wonderful people I met at DWTS who tolerated my dancing.”

Dancing with the Stars season 32 is still scheduled to premiere Tuesday, September 26, on ABC and Disney+.

After months of striking, there appears to be more progress between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the organization that represents the studios. They are continuing their negotiations Thursday, September 21.

The two parties first met Wednesday, September 20, after what appeared to be a stalemate over issues including studios’ use of AI and proper compensation for writers on streaming shows.

However, after a meeting that an insider described to Deadline as “very encouraging,” the two groups issued a rare joint statement to say they’re willing to stay around the table for another day.

According to the trade, on the studio side of things, Netflix head Ted Sarandos, Universal’s Chief Content Officer Donna Langley and Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav were present along with Bob Iger, the CEO of ABC News’ parent company Disney.

Ellen Stutzman, the WGA’s chief negotiator, was not alone representing their camp, but no other names were mentioned.

Another insider told the trade of the meeting, “This is what happens when principals get serious. Things start moving.

It looks like Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner‘s divorce might get messy.

According to documents obtained by ABC News, Sophie has filed a request to have Joe return their two daughters to their “forever home” in England. In them, she accuses Joe of “wrongful retention” of the children, starting “on or about” September 20.

Specifically, Sophie is claiming that Joe refused to give their daughters’ passports to her after he, according to the documents, agreed that the kids would return with her to her home country of England on September 17.  He’s also allegedly refusing to consent to the children returning to England, period.

This action, Sophie says, is a breach of her rights of custody under English law as England is the children’s “habitual residence.” The documents reveal that during Christmas 2022, Sophie and Joe decided that they’d look for their “forever home” in England and settle their family there.

They did so in April of 2023, according to the documents, and since then, the children have attended school and participated in extracurricular activities there. Sophie says that when Joe filed for divorce, he claimed the kids had lived in Florida — where the family used to live — for six months prior to the filing. Sophie says this is incorrect as they’ve lived in England since April of 2023.

Also of note, part of the documents says “the breakdown of the parties’ marriage happened very suddenly.” It claims that after Sophie and Joe argued on August 15, Joe filed for divorce on September 1, but Sophie only found out September 5 “through the media.”
