On May 12 at 10 p.m. ET, ABC airs TIME100: The World’s Most Influential People, filmed at the publication’s star-studded annual gala on April 25. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, it includes appearances by many of the 100 honorees, plus musical performances by Dua Lipa and Fantasia Barrino. At the gala, Henson told ABC Audio she’s been told she’s personally influenced people by “speaking her truth.”

“I’m honored. I’m amazed, and I’m grateful for that,” Henson told ABC Audio. “You know, when my celebrity started to rise, I didn’t want to fumble the ball because I know it’s a blessing to be in this position. And I made a pact with God, and I was like, ‘I’m going to share this gift with the world, but not just on the screen … I want to go out and try to bless others.’ So that’s what I try to do, because this thing called art is bigger than me.”

Another of this year’s 100 honorees, Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, told ABC Audio he’s very aware that he’s an influence on people — young people especially, including his former theater students.

“I know they’re watching … what I say, how I talk about being an artist, how I talk about the work,” he said. “I actually am very conscious that people are listening, so I know the microphone and the platform that I have.”

TIME CEO Jessica Sibley says the 100 most influential people were chosen for their “impact” and also whether or not it was “their year.”

Also during the event, you’ll see Michael J. Fox receive the Impact Award, given to “global leaders who have done extraordinary work to move their industries forward over the course of their careers.”

20th Century Studios

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes swings into theaters this weekend. The 10th film in the sci-fi franchise is set 300 years after the events of 2017’s War of the Planet of the Apes.

This time around, Wes Ball takes the reins as director from the previous trilogy’s helmer Matt Reeves, and Ball tells ABC Audio Kingdom is more than your usual summer movie fare.

“We started writing this thing right as COVID hit, right? And so we were thinking about that a lot. And so we kept talking about treating knowledge like a virus,” Ball says. “How you can catch it, you can spread it … It can change you for better or worse, you know what I mean?”

He adds, “Yeah, it’s a lot of stuff to chew on, I think, in the movie.”

Owen Teague stars as the main chimp Noa, with Freya Allen playing a mysterious human called Nova. Allen describes what she was looking at on set while all the ape actors were in their motion capture outfits. “A big stick coming out the head, the camera on it, a lot of dots and nipples,” she recalls.

Allen explains that last one a bit more, “Basically they had very tight suits on, and they had all these things on them which had, you know, circle and then a ball in there and it looked like nipples.”

Teague says of the mocap get-up, “I mean I think the first day when you’re aping for the first time, it can feel a bit silly, but … we were all so into it and so committed … We all just bought into it instantly.”

Prime Video revealed the first looks at its new animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Thursday, May 9.

The Warner Bros. Animation project was produced by The Batman‘s director Matt Reeves, Star Wars: Episode VII filmmaker J.J. Abrams and Bruce Timm, one of the legends behind the beloved and Emmy-winning Batman: The Animated Series.

Along with the 10-episode series’ release date of August 1, Prime Video has dropped teases of the looks of the show’s cast of characters, of course including Batman/Bruce Wayne, as well as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Clayface and Commissioner Gordon.

The streaming service also debuted a tease: “Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear,” it begins. “Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human — the BATMAN. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.”

Netflix’s recent The Greatest Roast of All Time, the all-star send-up of football legend Tom Brady, was a hit for the streaming service, notwithstanding some of the jokes about the controversy having to do with Kim Kardashian‘s appearance.

When the reality star and entrepreneur was first called to the podium Sunday, May 5, to take her shots at the star she was once rumored to be dating, Kim was met with boos from the crowd loud enough for host Kevin Hart to intervene.

After the live, three-hour presentation, however, the boos were silenced in post-production. To The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s Vice President of Comedy Content Robbie Praw insisted Kim didn’t demand the change.

“Post edits are standard practice for comedy specials and happen in live broadcasts, whether that’s subtitles, adding things or removing things that we can’t do when it’s streaming live,” Praw said, adding, “It’s part of, quite frankly, the fun of watching it live to not miss those things.”

He added, “But I will just say this, in addition to that, that no talent were [sic] consulted as part of that.”

Praw also revealed that despite some scathing comedic attacks — Praw called Nikki Glaser‘s scorching set “exceptional,” in fact — Brady was a good sport.

He called the reaction from Brady’s camp after the event “positive,” adding, “It was very clear that it was a very special night, both in the football world and in the comedy world, and the mood after the show was pretty jubilant.”

The replay of the Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady is now available for streaming — even if the boos are not.

With new tease, FX reveals Emmy-winning Hulu hit ‘The Bear’ gets cooking again June 27
FX

FX has just revealed that its Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning dramedy The Bear will drop all 10 episodes of its third season on Hulu on Thursday, June 27.

The network released a moody tease, showing Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto entering the empty kitchen of his new restaurant that shares the show’s name.

As the camera tracks toward him, he starts to unroll his knives, then pauses and stares directly into the camera, which zooms in further before tracking out through the eatery, out the window and up into the sky over Chicago.

While that doesn’t tell fans much about the new season, the announcement from FX reveals season 3 follows Carmy, Ayo Edebiri‘s Sydney Adamu and Ebon Moss-Bachrach‘s “Richie” Jerimovich as their characters “do what it takes to elevate The Bear, their beef stand turned fine dining establishment, to the highest level, all while doing their best just to stay in business.”

“Carmy pushes himself harder than ever, and demands excellence from his crew, who do their best to match his intensity,” the network continues, adding in part, “Their quest for culinary excellence will propel the crew to new levels and stress the bonds that hold the restaurant together.”

FX adds, “Our chefs have learned that every second counts, but this season we’ll find out if they have what it takes to make it to tomorrow.”

The acclaimed series also stars Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, and real-life chef and actor Matty Matheson, with Oliver Platt and Molly Gordon.

Seth MacFarlane‘s potty-mouthed bear Ted had two movies to his name, and now he’ll have at least two TV seasons to it, as well.

Peacock announced on Thursday, May 9, that it is re-upping the prequel series Ted for a sophomore frame.

The show features the voice of producer MacFarlane as the titular teddy, alongside Max Burkholder as the bear’s Thunder Buddy John — Mark Wahlberg‘s character from the film — in his high school days.

Peacock says the series debuted on January 11, and broke records as one of the streaming service’s most-watched original titles and ranked as the #1 original streaming comedy in the U.S. for two months straight, according to Nielsen data.

The show, which earned an audience score of 90% in its first season, per aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, was also a hit for Peacock overseas, scoring particularly well in Australia and Canada.

Dev Patel calls his action picture ‘Monkey Man’ “an anthem of representation”

Dev Patel calls his action picture ‘Monkey Man’ “an anthem of representation”
Universal Pictures

On the red carpet at the recent TIME100 Gala in New York City, one of the list’s honorees, actor and now director Dev Patel, talked about his new action picture Monkey Man

Co-produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele, the movie stars the Slumdog Millionaire vet as an underground fight club combatant who becomes a one-man army of retribution against the elites who took everything from him.

Made for around $10 million, the movie has grossed more than triple that worldwide since its release on April 5.

Regardless of the box office take, Patel tells ABC Audio that the movie is already a personal triumph. “I’m really proud that it exists and that it got a theatrical release. And we were at the Mann Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles,” he says, referring to the famous venue now officially called the TCL Chinese Theatre.

He adds, “[It’s] like the Mecca of Hollywood, with … a predominantly brown cast,” calling that development huge for representation.

He describes his movie as “an anthem of representation at its core.”

“We made this film in the height of the pandemic in Indonesia on a small island,” Dev says, adding that Monkey Man “really enjoys the art of martial arts and revenge cinema, but it also underneath … the physical punches, it has some emotional and political punches, too.”

Disney and HBO got together and just announced they’ve made a streaming bundle of joy: a package that will offer viewers content from Disney+, Max and Disney-owned Hulu.

It’s a unique collab, as most streaming services offer content bundles from within their corporate umbrella — such as Disney and its sports brand ESPN, or Paramount+ with Showtime, the latter of which are both owned by parent company Viacom.

Max is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to the announcement, the package, which will be made available this summer, will provide subscribers “with the best value in entertainment and an unprecedented selection of content from the biggest and most beloved brands in entertainment including ABC, CNN, DC, Discovery, Disney, Food Network, FX, HBO, HGTV, Hulu, Marvel, Pixar, Searchlight, Warner Bros., and many more.”

Joe Earley, president of Disney Entertainment’s Direct to Consumer division, commented, “This incredible new partnership puts subscribers first, giving them access to blockbuster films, originals, and three massive libraries featuring the very best brands and entertainment in streaming today.”

Both an ad-free and a less expensive ad-supported version of the new bundle will be made available for purchase on all three platforms. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
