Drew Barrymore says her therapist fired her before she stopped drinking

In a wide-ranging interview with the Los Angeles Times, Drew Barrymore describes how she turned to alcohol after her marriage to art consultant Will Kopelman fell apart.

The actress-turned-eponymous talk show host, who has battled addiction in the past, explained that before she quit drinking for good in 2019, her therapist quit on her.

“He just said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,'” Barrymore said of counselor to the stars Barry Michels. “It was really about my drinking. I said, ‘I get it. I’ve never respected you more. You see I’m not getting better. And I hope, one day, that I can earn your trust back.'”

Drew’s celebrity friends supported her, the interview says. Her longtime friend and Charlie’s Angels co-star Cameron Diaz called this period “difficult to watch.” She added, “But I knew that if we all stuck with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way. I have absolute faith in her.”

The Drew Barrymore Show convinced the star to turn things around. “I think the opportunity at a show like this really hit me,” Drew tells the paper. “I was like, ‘I can’t handle this unless I’m in a really clear place.'”

After a rough start, the show was retooled and rebounded in the ratings; it has been renewed for a fourth season. Her therapist also took her back, she says.

Despite having been in hit movies like Never Been Kissed and 50 First Dates, Barrymore insists she’s stepping back from acting — for now: “I hate when people are like, ‘I’m retiring’ … I don’t want it to come off that way.”

In addition to hosting the show, Drew says being a mom to her daughters with Kopelman — Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8 — is “the role of my life.”

Jeremy Renner announces his docuseries ‘Rennervations’ will hit Disney+ on April 12

Disney+

While he continues to recover at home from his near-fatal New Year’s Day snowplow accident, Jeremy Renner took to Instagram to announce his docuseries Rennervations will debut on Disney+ on April 12.

The four-part series will see the big-screen superhero and real-life renovation expert rehabbing vehicles and donating them to communities that need them the most.

In a press release, Renner said, “I’ve been on this journey for many years, and I started in my community by building vehicles for people in need. But a few years ago, I thought, how can I plus this up and create a bigger impact on a whole community – and that’s what this show does.”

The two-time Oscar nominee adds, “This is one of my biggest passions and it’s a driving force in my recovery, and I can’t wait for the world to see it.”

Disney+ teases, “With his best friend and business partner, Rory Millikin, and an all-star build crew, Renner travels the globe to reimagine decommissioned vehicles and rebuild them to serve a new purpose, such as turning a tour bus into a mobile music studio, a delivery truck into a mobile water treatment facility, a shuttle bus into a mobile recreation center, and a city bus into a mobile dance studio.”

The show will see Renner partnering with celebrity guests, including his Hurt Locker and Marvel movie co-star Anthony Mackie, actress and entrepreneur Vanessa Hudgens, Slumdog Millionaire and Mission: Impossible star Anil Kapoor, and Encanto singer and songwriter Sebastián Yatra, to provide vehicles to charities like Big Brothers Big Sisters, The BASE Chicago and Casa Hogar of Cabo San Lucas.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

“This is long overdue”: Courteney Cox takes a call from Ghostface in final ‘Scream VI’ trailer

Paramount Pictures

The final trailer for Scream VI starts off where it all began: a ringing phone.

Franchise mainstay Courteney Cox takes a call from Ghostface, who comments, “Strange you and I have never spoken on the phone. This is long overdue.”

Intercut with rave reviews from outlets that got a peek, we see the robed killer stalking Scream V‘s survivors — including Jenna Ortega‘s Tara, Melissa Barrera‘s Sam, Jasmin Savoy Brown‘s Mindy and Mason Gooding‘s Chad — both below and above the streets of New York City.

The group also encounters “a shrine” to the murderer, featuring mannequins of his earlier incarnations.

However, they’re not going down without a fight. “We’ve got to lure him in,” Tara says, “and we execute him.”

Judging by the clips that follow, however, that’s apparently easier said than done.

Scream VI opens Friday.

Road to the Oscars 2023: Paul Mescal says his mum always believed he would be an Oscar nominee

A24

When Paul Mescal agreed to act in Aftersun, awards were the last thing on his mind. So, when he found out he was up for best leading actor at this year’s Academy Awards, Mescal tells ABC Audio it came as a shock.

“The way awards season works, there’s always three or four [performances] that are fairly sure bets as you get to Oscar nominations morning. And we were never, ever inside that,” Mescal says. “The drama of that actually happening is probably something that won’t ever happen again.”

While being an Oscar-nominated actor seemed like a far-off dream, Mescal says there was one person who always believed in him — his mother.

“She’s had that date booked in her diary for years. She had lots of confidence, probably more confidence than I did, that this was ever going to happen,” Mescal says.

That date is quickly approaching. Mescal and his mother will attend the ceremony on March 12, and he says he’s been thinking about what it will feel like to experience the Oscars in person.

“I just have a hyper fixation of what it’s going to feel like,” Mescal says. “I distinctly remember waking up in the middle of the night to watch it back in Ireland. That’s the image in my head, is sitting in the car with my mum and driving to it.”

While Mescal’s mother will sit next to him during the ceremony, his father will also attend, seated elsewhere in the theater. Their support, Mescal says, was crucial in getting him to this moment.

“I feel like I’ve had a network of people around me who never said no,” Mescal said. “If I’m ever going to be a parent, I’m going to take a leaf out of their book and never say no. Ever.”

Road to the Oscars 2023: Why “Naatu Naatu” could beat Rihanna and Lady Gaga for Best Original Song

L; Jr. NTR Jr., R: Ram Charan in ‘RRR’/Courtesy of Variance Films

In the category of Best Original Song at Sunday night’s Oscars, the nominees include songs by pop superstars Rihanna and Lady Gaga, rock star David Byrne and legendary songwriter Diane Warren, plus one outlier: “Naatu Naatu,” from the Indian film RRR

The first song from an Indian film to be nominated in this category, “Naatu Naatu” is sung in the Indian language of Telugu and is the centerpiece of the film’s critically acclaimed dance number. It’s already won the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Original Song. Many feel it also deserves the Oscar because, unlike the other nominated songs, it’s part of the plot.

RRR is about the friendship between two Indian revolutionaries during the time the British ruled India. “Naatu Naatu” soundtracks an important scene in which the main characters, Raju and Bheem, are insulted by a rude Englishman. Instead of fighting him, they dance him under the table.

“That is one of the reasons it has great emotion,” Ram Charan, who plays Raju, tells ABC Audio. “And that’s why you’re enjoying the steps and enjoying that song.” Charan says the title “Naatu Naatu” means “local local” or “rootedness,” in terms of being “rooted” in the Indian soil.

The song is being performed at the Oscars this Sunday, but Charan says he doesn’t know if he’ll be doing the dance.

“I would love to do it,” says Charan. “It’s like giving back to the audience … a way of saying a big ‘thank you’ to everybody across the world.”

What Charan is sure about is that he’s going to have a “fanboy moment” on the red carpet and will be excited that, as he says, “I am actually witnessing this and experiencing this — and I’m so grateful to God for that.”

Halle Bailey‘s version of Ariel in The Little Mermaid will be seen in theaters — and possibly stores, too. In an Instagram post Monday, the singer revealed her character has its own doll, which even has a mole just like hers.

“I have something really exciting to reveal to you all. I am gonna cry,” she said in a video. “This is the new Little Mermaid doll! I am literally choking up because this means so much to me.”

She wrote in the post’s caption, “Omg…the little girl in me is pinching herself right now ..I have my own Little Mermaid Ariel doll !!! I can’t believe how much she captures my version of this iconic character…brb gonna go cry now.”

Halle stars as Ariel in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, set to premiere May 23 in theaters nationwide. It’s not clear when or if her new doll will be released.

‘The Bachelor’ recap: Zach picks the four women whose families he’ll meet

ABC/Craig Sjodin

Emotions ran high on Monday’s episode of The Bachelor, as each rose came with the chance for Zach to visit that lady’s hometown and meet her family.

A week in charming Budapest, Hungary began with Kaity and Zach exploring the city and writing love poems to each other. Over dinner, she revealed that what she wanted out of a relationship was “family,” “stability” and a man who would “be there” for her, explaining that she’d lost two dads in her life — her birth father, who left when she was very young and a man who dated her mother and became a father figure to Kaity, before leaving as well. Zach took the first step by offering her the date rose and the chance to introduce him to her family in Austin.

Next, a group date featuring a mentalist triggered emotions and anxieties that caused some of the ladies — Gabbi included — to question their connections with Zach. Gabbi’s fears were alleviated when Zach offered her the date rose, and a chance to meet her family in Vermont.

Brooklyn‘s one-on-one date ended in heartbreak after telling Zach that she could definitely see a future with him. Despite feeling a “strong” connection with Brooklyn, however, Zach said he also felt something hadn’t “clicked,” and sent her home.

Greer, who was sidelined by COVID-19 last week, rejoined Zach and the others in Budapest, only to learn that some of his other connections had already “gotten really strong,” and there was no way for her to catch up before hometowns.

The final two hometown dates, revealed during Monday’s rose ceremony, went to Ariel and Charity, leaving Kat to return home to Tampa.

Here are the four remaining women whose families Zach will meet:

Ariel, 28, a marketing executive from New York City, N.Y.
Charity, 26, a child and family therapist from Columbus, Ga.
Gabriella “Gabi,” 25, an account executive from Pittsford, Vt.
Kaitlyn “Kaity,” 27, an ER nurse from Austin, Texas.

The Bachelor returns on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, when Zack will meet the families. Then on Tuesday — also at 8 p.m. — your favorite ladies from season 27 return for The Bachelor: The Women Tell All.
