What’s the truth behind the Milli Vanilli lip-synching scandal of the late ’80s/early ’90s? The new movie Girl You Know It’s True, opening in select theaters across the country and available on digital and on-demand platforms on Aug. 9, takes us behind the scenes and into the lives of frontmen Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, producer/mastermind Frank Farian, the label executives at Arista Music and more.

After admitting to not singing on the hits that made them famous and won them a Grammy, Rob and Fab were chased out of the industry. While Fab was able to weather the storm psychologically, Rob was not. He slipped further into addiction, dying of an overdose in 1998.

Fab tells ABC Audio the emotions of what happened are still near the surface, as evidenced by what happened at a recent screening of the film in San Francisco.

“I was doing a Q&A. And as I was talking, I was reliving this scene in the movie of Rob. And bro, I broke out. Like I was talking and suddenly I’m crying, like, ‘Oh my God.’ And it just happened in 20 seconds.”

“Rob paid a price with his life … I had the strength and resilience to go through this gauntlet and come out stronger,” says Fab, but the others involved “continued to go on about their business, there was no consequences for them.”

Looking back, Morvan says he’d “get us in the studio while Frank was sleeping [and] change those voices … and then we’d be good. I would have saved myself and Rob the pain of being called … not talented, can’t sing. Because I’ve had to deal with that my whole professional life as an artist.”

Reviews hint it might be game over for ‘Borderlands’ movie

Lionsgate

The video game franchise Borderlands has legions of fans around the world. However, the upcoming movie adaptation, not so much — at least according to reviewers.

The action comedy starring Cate BlanchettJamie Lee CurtisKevin Hart and the voice of Jack Black heads to theaters on Friday with a Rotten Tomatoes aggregated critics score of just 3% — one of the lowest scores of the year.

It remains to be seen what audiences think of Eli Roth‘s action comedy, which also stars Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munteanu — after all, a critics score a blockbuster does not necessarily make.

That said, the reviewers absolutely teed off on the film, which was branded a “catastrophic disappointment” according to one critic; a “noisy rip-off” of Guardians of the Galaxy, according to another; and a movie that no less “represents the lowest point cinema could ever reach,” according to a third.

That said, even the most savage review still gave points to Blanchett’s performance as Lilith, who leads a ragtag team on an extraterrestrial treasure hunt.

Believe: Co-creator Bill Lawrence says ‘Ted Lasso’ could return — under one condition
Apple TV+

When it comes to the future of the Emmy magnet Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso, the coach has the ball.

That’s the word from the show’s co-creator Bill Lawrence, who tells Collider that a fourth season of the beloved show is a possibility — but only if its titular manager Jason Sudeikis puts the whistle back on.

“Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it,” Lawrence tells the website.

He adds, “Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children. It’s a big deal.”

For the record, Lawrence wants to see a season 4, too. “So, as a fan, if someone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna happen again,’ I’ll go nuts. As a partner, I’m down for whatever he wants to do.”

So, for now, Lasso fans, do like the sign in AFC Richmond’s locker room says: “Believe.”

The rumors were true: Michelle Pfeiffer is joining Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone universe. The actress will headline The Madison, a project that had a working title of 2024.

Paramount Networks calls the series “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”

In the announcement, Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global co-CEO, called Pfeiffer “a remarkable talent who imbues every role with emotional depth, authenticity and grace” and “the perfect anchor to the newest chapter of the Yellowstone universe.”

As reported back in May, both Pfeiffer and Matthew McConaughey were reportedly circling the follow-up to Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel shows 1883, 1923 and the upcoming 1944

So far, no word has emerged about McConaughey’s involvement.

In May, Puck News reported that the flagship show’s Kelly ReillyCole Hauser and Luke Grimes — who respectively play fan favorites Beth Dutton, her husband, Rip, and her brother, Kaycee — will be back in the saddle for what was then known as 2024.

There’s no official word on the trio’s return as of yet, as Yellowstone begins its ride into the sunset with the second part of its fifth and final season starting Nov. 10 on Paramount Network.

Every Saturday at 11:30 p.m., Saturday Night Live will be on — but 49 years ago, that was impossible to imagine.

That’s the central thrust of the new trailer to Saturday Night, director Jason Reitman‘s look back at the evening of Oct. 11, 1975: The very first night of the show that would become an icon of comedy.

Before the curtain rose on that first show, however, there was chaos. A green, 30-year-old producer named Lorne Michaels had to convince a skeptical, even hostile, NBC that he had what it took to control a rowdy cast of comedic talent, including John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and Garrett Morris, and somehow pull off a live, 90-minute comedy show.

Cooper Hoffman plays Dick Ebersol, then the young producer of late-night programming for the network. “You ever wonder why they said yes? They want you to fail!” he tells Gabriel LaBelle‘s Michaels.

In addition to the volatile combination of Matt Wood as Belushi, Ella Hunt as Radner and particularly Cory Michael Smith as an egomaniacal Chase, backstage that night was a fiery George Carlin (Matthew Rhys) and a confused Jim Henson (Nicholas Braun), who laments some of the comics left Big Bird hanged in effigy outside the Muppets creator’s dressing room.

Dylan O’Brien stars as Dan Aykroyd, whose last name was unpronounceable to emcee Don Pardo (Brian Welch), and Finn Wolfhard appears as a lowly NBC page.

Willem Dafoe also appears as a network executive, who seethes at Michaels, and J.K. Simmons appears as a smug Milton Berle.

“We just have to make it to air,” Michaels insists as the clock ticks to 11:30.

Saturday Night hits theaters on Oct. 11.

Colin Jost limps away from Olympics surfing correspondent gig amid “growing list of ailments”

NBCUniversal

After scraping his foot on a coral reef and getting a staph infection, then suffering a subsequent ear infection, SNL‘s “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost has apparently signed off as NBC’s “Olympic surfing correspondent.”

While the funnyman told NBC’s Olympics anchor Mike Tirico he had a “growing list of ailments” in the South Pacific and planned to get “as many infections as there are Olympic Events,” Deadline reports Jost has left Tahiti, and the network replaced him at the surfing beat with Australian weatherman Luke Bradnam.

Jost recently updated his Instagram with footage of a pre-taped, hard-hitting interview with Teahupo’o [TAY-ah-HOOP-oh], a display of skulls in Tahiti that shares the name with the monster wave break in which the Olympic competition is taking place.

Jost asked the wall-mounted noggins if the term “Teahup’o” is “offensive to skulls.”

One replied the term is in fact insulting and just another example of “this anti-skull nonsense: You know, they put us on the poison label, they put us on the pirate flag.” Some commenters correctly pointed out that the mounted skulls sounded suspiciously like Triumph the Insult Comic Dog’s alter ego, comedian Robert Smigel.

Jost captioned the video bit by saying, “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

Deadline notes it’s not known if he’ll be rejoining NBC’s coverage of the Summer Games in Paris.

Blake Lively and Hugh Jackman are throwing it back nearly seven decades, appearing in a new Alfred Hitchcock-inspired photo shoot, a modern take on the famed director’s 1955 film To Catch a Thief.

The shoot’s titled “The Heist of the Heart” for Vogue‘s September 2024 issue, which was photographed and directed by Baz Luhrmann. In the pictorial, Lively plays “the Cat,” a modern reinterpretation of Carey Grant‘s sticky-fingered character, the male thief in the Hitchcock’s romantic thriller.

Deadpool & Wolverine star Jackman poses as “L’Ombre,” the target of Lively’s thievery. Looking very James Bond, Jackman shows off a sleek black tuxedo, adjusting the cuffs on his suit in one photo while playing the wealthy victim.

“It was all about finding an imagined role for Blake that perhaps we’d all like to see her play,” Luhrmann told Vogue of the artistic decisions made in the shoot.

In one photo, Blake stuns in a head-to-toe all-black catsuit. In another, she sits with a contemplative look in a room filled with precious jewelry strewn haphazardly across the floor.

The Monaco setting of the original film is apparent throughout the shoot with the southern French coast glittering in the moonlight behind a nefarious photo of Lively.

In another photo, Lively and Jackman jet across the famous coastline on a motorcycle, Lively’s polka-dot dress flowing in the background.

Though the cinematic views of Monte Carlo are enchanting, the photos were all shot in New York City using LED backdrop technology, according to Vogue.

It Ends with Us star Lively is also the cover star of Vogue‘s September 2024 issue.

Ewan Mitchell unwraps that ‘House of the Dragon’ season 2 finale

No more dragons for a while. HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon concluded season 2 with its finale Sunday and the episode seemed to set up all-out war in season 3.

Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond Targaryen, the acting king of Westeros and the guy with the biggest dragon, tells ABC Audio what he loved about the season 2 finale.

“That’s the first time that you start to see Aemond break a little bit, and he gets desperate and he begs his sister to join him upon Dream Fire. And then he starts to overextend,” he says. “And I can’t wait to see more of that in season 3.”

We learn in the finale that Aemond used his dragon Vhagar to decimate the town of Sharp Point. While we don’t see the carnage, the implication is that it was an act of rage from a bitter ruler who feels his grasp on power is slipping. However, Mitchell thinks there was more to Aemond’s madness.

“Geographically where Sharp Point is situated is very close to The Gullet. And so I think Aemond kind of justifies that action by saying, look, I’m just warming up the blockade ahead of next season … I think Aemond, he does have that kind of strategic kind of justification for what he did,” he tells ABC Audio.

Mitchell doesn’t have any idea where season 3 is going, because he’s only read George R.R. Martin‘s Fire and Blood, the book the series is based on, to where season 2 ends. But if he did, even his family and friends aren’t getting anything out of him.

“I even kept the secret of my nude scene to my mom in episodes two and three,” he says. “I kept it all hush. And yeah, she screamed the house down. It was very funny.”
