Elvis Costello taps Latin-music artists to record Spanish-language version of his 1978 album ‘This Year’s Model’

UMe

Elvis Costello has enlisted some of the biggest artists from the Latin music world to create a Spanish-language reimagining his 1978 sophomore studio effort, This Year’s Model.

The new album, titled Spanish Model, will be released on September 10, and features all of the songs from This Year’s Model plus select other tunes from that record’s sessions, with the various Latin artists singing the songs’ lyrics in Spanish over the original music played by Costello and his band The Attractions.

Costello collaborated on the project with Latin Grammy Producer of the Year winner Sebastian Krys, who remixed the This Year’s Model tracks from the original master recordings.

“Part of the fun of this project is its unexpected nature,” Elvis says. “Although, I think people in my audience that have been paying attention are pretty much used to surprises by now.”

Colombian rock star Juanes‘ rendition of the Costello classic “Pump It Up” has been released as an advance digital single from Spanish Model, and a companion music video has debuted at Costello’s official YouTube channel.

“‘Pump It Up’ is such an iconic and signature song from Elvis’ amazing repertoire, that it was a real honor to have the chance to sing with the original 1978 recording and be a part of that propulsive energy,” says Juanes.

Other artists who have contributed to the album include Luis Fonsi, Sebastián Yatra and Cami.

Spanish Model will be available on CD, digitally and as a 180-gram vinyl LP. A newly remastered version of This Year’s Model also will be issued on September 10. In addition, a limited-edition two-LP set pairing the remastered original album with Spanish Model will be available exclusively via ElvisCostello.com, uDiscoverMusic.com and the Sound of Vinyl website.

Harvey Guillén makes his “childhood dream” come true with new role on ‘Mickey Mouse Funhouse’

Disney Junior

Harvey Guillén cavorts with vampires in the FX series What We Do in the Shadows, but now he’s hanging with a more wholesome cast of characters as part of the new Disney Junior animated series Mickey Mouse Funhouse.

Guillén voices Funny the Funhouse, an enchanted playhouse that magically takes Mickey and friends on all kinds of adventures. The self-proclaimed Disney fan calls the role a dream come true.

“I still can’t put [it] into words,” he tells ABC Audio. “[This] was my childhood dream. If I would have gone back in time and told five-year-old me, like, ‘You’re going to be a Funhouse in Mickey Mouse’s Funhouse,’ I would have not believed myself.”

Guillén hopes the series will bring that same feeling to a new generation of little ones.

“It’s a really lovely story, just the idea that, you know, we don’t know what every day has for us, but what we can do is that we can rely on our imagination,” Guillén says. “So whatever our circumstance is, you could be in your house and your house can become a spaceship. Your house can become a castle.”

He continues, “I love the idea that we’re introducing…that world to kids where we don’t need to get on a plane and go on an adventure, we can stay in our backyard and it becomes a fantasy world.”

Mickey Mouse Funhouse debuts with a primetime special “Mickey the Brave!” on Disney Junior at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT tonight, followed by the series premiere on Friday, August 20 on both Disney Channel and Disney Junior at 8 a.m. ET/PT.

FAA mandates inspections of Boeing 737 switches that could pose safety risk

nycshooter/iStock

(WASHINGTON) — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is instructing airlines to inspect their Boeing 737 fleet for faulty altitude pressure switches that could potentially pose a safety risk.

The switches are part of a system designed to warn flight crew of cabin depressurization. Planes are equipped with two cabin altitude pressure switches so there is a backup if one fails. But the crew and maintenance personnel are not alerted of switch failures.

If both switches fail and the plane is over 10,000 feet in the air, the FAA says there is a danger of the cabin altitude warning system not activating. In that case “oxygen levels could become dangerously low.”

“A latent failure of both pressure switches could result in the loss of cabin altitude warning, which could delay flight crew recognition of a lack of cabin pressurization, and result in incapacitation of the flight crew due to hypoxia (a lack of oxygen in the body), and consequent loss of control of the airplane,” the agency said.

The FAA order affects around 2,500 planes in the U.S. including the Boeing 737 Max and 737 NextGen. The directive does not remove any planes from service and is unrelated to the 737 Max flight control system issues that contributed to two recent fatal crashes.

Airlines have roughly 90 days, or every 2,000 flight hours, to complete inspections and replace switches as needed. The inspections can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes and around 15 minutes for replacements. Previously, inspections of these switches were required every 6,000 flight hours.

According to the FAA, there have not been any in-flight switch failures. The concern was prompted by a test in September when an operator reported that both switches had failed on three different models of the Boeing 737.

In November, Boeing decided the failures were not a safety issue, the FAA said.

But “subsequent investigation and analysis led the FAA and the airplane manufacturer to determine, in May of 2021, that the failure rate of both switches is much higher than initially estimated, and therefore does pose a safety issue,” the FAA said, adding “addressing these failures requires immediate action.”

In response to the analysis, Boeing issued a reccomendation to ramp up switch insepections on all Boeing 737s.

“Safety is our highest priority, and we fully support the FAA’s direction, which makes mandatory the inspection interval that we issued to the fleet in June,” Boeing said in a statement to ABC News.

On ‘Good Morning America,’ Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo announces four-album ‘Seasons’ series

ABC/Byron Cohen

In 2021 so far, Weezer has released two albums — OK Human and Van Weezer — and Rivers Cuomo says he’s got a bunch more coming.

Appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday to promote the upcoming Hella Mega tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy, Cuomo said, “I’ve guess I’ve had a lot of time on my hands so I wrote four albums that we’ll put out next year. It’s called Seasons, and each album comes out on the first year of the season.”

Cuomo described the “spring” album as “happy chill,” the “fall” album as “dance-rock, Strokes-style,” followed by the “sad, acoustic, Elliot Smith-style” music for winter. He didn’t mention what summer will sound like.

Billie Joe Armstrong appeared on GMA with Cuomo, but when asked about plans for new Green Day music to follow their most recent single, “Pollyanna,” he said, “Not in the immediate future but you never know. We always get a wild hair and end up doing something. But right now, we’re just looking forward to the tour.”

Also on the show, Weezer performed “Hero” and Fall Out Boy did “Uma Thurman” to get fans hyped for the Hella Mega tour, which kicks off July 24.

While the mercurial funnyman is legendarily hard to reach in Hollywood, it’s pretty clear director Wes Anderson has Bill Murray‘s number, creatively speaking.

Murray has reportedly agreed to star in Anderson’s next project, an as-yet-untitled film set in Spain, Variety reports. Another frequent Anderson collaborator, Tilda Swinton, has also signed on.

The trio recently collaborated on The French Dispatch, which they promoted at the Cannes Film Festival.

The new project is the ninth between Anderson and Murray, who has appeared in the director’s films starting with 1998’s Rushmore, and including The Royal TenenbaumsThe Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,  Fantastic Mr. FoxThe Darjeeling LimitedMoonrise KingdomIsle of Dogs, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Murray is notoriously choosy in his career, employing a 1-800 number for people to call and record job offers to him, rather than using an agent or manager.

(NEW YORK) — Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is withdrawing from the Olympics and will not play for Team USA, his agent told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski Friday.

Love spent ten days with the U.S. Men’s National Basketball Team in Las Vegas, preparing for the upcoming Olympics. But Love continues to recover from a right calf injury that forced him to miss much of the NBA season.

“I am incredibly disappointed to not be heading to Tokyo with Team USA,” Love said in a statement. “But you need to be at absolute peak performance to compete at the Olympic level and I am just not there yet.”

Love is the second player Team USA will have to replace on short notice, after Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal was forced to withdraw due to COVID-19 protocols. Beal entered the health and safety protocol for the virus earlier this week.

USA Basketball also announced late Thursday that its exhibition matchup against Australia, scheduled for Friday night, was being canceled. That after a second USA player, Detroit Pistons star Jerami Grant, was also placed in the health and safety protocol.

Team USA’s final exhibition game is scheduled for Sunday against Spain. They are expected to fly to Japan on Monday, before their Olympic Opener on July 25.
