Portishead’s Beth Gibbons reveals title of debut solo album

Mike Lewis Photography/Redferns

Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons has revealed the title of her debut solo album.

The upcoming record is called Lives Outgrown, which Gibbons says “reflects what’s been going on with me internally.”

“My 50’s have brought forward a new yet older horizon,” Gibbons writes in an Instagram post. “It has been a time of farewells to family, friends and even to who I was before, the lyrics mirroring my anxieties and sleepless nighttime ruminations, hence Lives Outgrown.”

News of Lives Outgrown arrives over a decade after Gibbons first signed with Domino Records for a solo album in 2013. While a release date for the record has yet to be announced, Gibbons teases that “I am able to offer some new music very soon.”

Portishead’s most recent album is 2008’s Third, and they performed live for the first time in seven years in 2022.

Outside of Portishead, Gibbons also released an album in 2002 in collaboration with Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb, as well as a symphony recording in 2019.

Watch Jelly Roll be shocked by his own tattoos in new Super Bowl ad

Disney/Scott Kirkland

Jelly Roll is the latest musician to land a spot in a Super Bowl ad.

The country/pop/rock crossover artist appears in an ad for Uber Eats, and you can watch a 15-second teaser for it now.

In it, Jelly is in the bathroom putting stuff away in the medicine cabinet. But when he closes the mirrored door and catches a glimpse of his own tattoo-filled face, he’s shocked.

“What happened to my face? Are these tattoos?” he screams. “They’re everywhere! And they’re horrible!”

Then we see the words, “Whatever you forget this Sunday … remember Uber Eats. 2.11.24.”

Before his “appearance” at the big game, though, Jelly Roll has the Grammys coming up Sunday. He’s up for Best New Artist and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Save Me,” his duet with Lainey Wilson. If Jelly, 39, wins Best New Artist, he’ll be the oldest solo artist ever to have won that particular award.

Oh, and Lainey’s also in a Super Bowl ad, for Coors Light.

Latto says Megan Thee Stallion is “making us proud” with “Hiss” success

Aaron J. Thornton/Getty Images, ABC/Chrys Davis

Latto hopped in Megan Thee Stallion‘s Instagram comment section Wednesday to show the Houston Hottie some love.

Megan has been sharing behind-the-scenes content and chart updates about her bombshell latest record, “Hiss.” In her most recent post, where she thanked her fans for the continued support, Latto dropped by to let her know she’s a fan of the song, too.

“Hotties I really really love and appreciate everything KEEP RUNNING UP #HISS EVERYWHERE,” Megan wrote

Latto responded, “U making us proud Meg,” along with the star-struck emoji.

Megan recently shared some of the song’s milestones: it topped the U.S. Spotify chart and reached #1 on iTunes.

The support from Latto follows days of online controversy between Megan and Nicki Minaj, who apparently took issue with the lyric about “Megan’s Law” — U.S. legislation regarding registered sex offenders. The line is said to be a slight at Nicki’s husband, Kenneth Petty, who failed to register as a sex offender.

Nicki went on a social media rant and dropped a diss record called “Big Foot,” which is an apparent jab at Megan being shot in the foot in 2020.

Latto had her share of beef with Nicki when the two exchanged words over after Nicki called out the 2023 Grammys for including Latto’s “Big Energy” in the rap category and not her own “Super Freaky Girl.” Latto, who once publicly praised Nicki as one of her idols, said in a series of tweets that she would no longer let Nicki bully her.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says cancer diagnosis was ‘gut punch,’ instinct was keep private

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin meets with the U.K. Secretary of State for Defense Grant Shapps at the Pentagon on Jan. 31, 2024 in Arlington, Virginia. (Samuel Corum/Getty Images)

(WASHINGTON) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is holding a press conference at the Pentagon podium, his first media briefing since his surgery and subsequent hospitalization — both of which were kept secret from the public and White House.

“We did not handle this right. I did not handle this right,” Austin said.

“I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis, and should also have told my team and the American public,” he continued. “I take full responsibility. I apologize to my teammates and to the American people.”

It is also the first time the public is seeing him standing. He continues to undergo physical therapy.

The defense secretary underwent a minimally invasive surgical procedure for prostate cancer Dec. 22, which led to a urinary tract infection and serious intestinal complications. He was hospitalized again on Jan. 1, but the White House didn’t learn of it for three days.

The delay in informing President Joe Biden and top administration officials of his hospitalization prompted intense scrutiny and is under investigation by lawmakers and the Pentagon.

Austin said he never “directed anyone” to keep his Jan. 1 hospitalization from the White House, and also denied creating a “culture of secrecy.”

Austin also said he directly apologized to Biden, and told him he was “deeply sorry” for not letting him know of his diagnosis immediately.

Austin spoke frankly about his first response after learning about his cancer diagnosis.

“The news shook me, as I know that it shakes so many others, especially in the Black community. It was a gut punch,” he said. “And frankly, my first instinct was to keep it private. I don’t think it’s news that I’m a pretty private guy. I never like burdening others with my problems. It’s just not my way.”

“But I’ve learned from this experience,” he continued. “Taking this kind of job means losing some of the privacy that most of us expect. The American people have a right to know if their leaders are facing health challenges that might affect their ability to perform their duties — even temporarily. So a wider circle should have been notified, especially the president.”

On Jan. 12, Biden publicly faulted Austin for not informing him earlier that he was hospitalized for complications from cancer treatment.

When a reporter asked Biden whether it was “a lapse in judgment for him not to tell you earlier,” Biden replied, “Yes.”

At the same time, when asked by a reporter if he still had confidence in Austin, Biden replied he did.

Ryan Reynolds, Jimmy Kimmel collab on Groundhog Day ads for Frito-Lay

Courtesy Maximum Effort

And whether or not Punxsutawney Phil, or any other local marmots, see their shadows, you’ll definitely see a new set of Groundhog Day-themed Frito-Lay ads on ABC.

That’s because Ryan Reynolds‘ Maximum Effort brand has crafted a cheeky set of commercials starring Groundhog Day star Stephen Tobolowsky — best known to fans of the beloved 1993 film as Ned “BING!” Ryerson.

The spots will run all day Friday on ABC and Hulu; in each one, Tobolowsky is seen returning to the same cashier over and over again — each time trying to purchase a different flavor of Lay’s chips and each time getting increasingly suspicious.

But like Bill Murray‘s character, every time he relives the same moment, Tobolowsky’s character gets more and more upset. “I’m never gonna get out of here,” he moans as the time loop continues.

Eventually, the cashier, Always Sunny‘s Artemis Pebdani, gets dark: “Do you know how many flavors of Lay’s there are? You’re never getting out of here. We haven’t event gotten to the Veggie Poppables yet.”

“Ooh, they make Veggie Poppables?” Tobolowsky asks, hopefully.

Apparently, Maximum Effort conceived of the chain of ads just two weeks ago and reached out to Frito-Lay, which approved the quick turnaround. Jimmy Kimmel‘s Kimmelot company helped get them to air.

In keeping with the looping theme, Frito-Lay, Kimmel and Reynolds issued cheeky, identical comments about the spots, noting in part, “Creativity is at the core of everything we do at Maximum Effort and that allows us to bring fun ideas to life over, and over, and over again.”

Report: Luke Combs + Tracy Chapman to perform at Grammy Awards

ABC

Luke Combs is reportedly set to perform his hit cover of “Fast Car” with Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Variety reports that Tracy, who released her pop song in 1988, will return to the spotlight for the performance after years of being away from the public eye. Her upcoming appearance with Luke is particularly noteworthy because “she has only performed for the cameras three times since wrapping up her last tour in 2009,” according to Variety.

Luke’s rendition of “Fast Car” hit #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase Country charts in 2023 and is now an RIAA-certified double-Platinum single. The song also won Song of the Year and Single of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards.

While Tracy couldn’t be there in person, she shared a statement with the CMA that was read onstage. “I’m sorry I couldn’t join you all tonight. It’s truly an honor for my song to be newly recognized after 35 years of its debut. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all of the fans of ‘Fast Car,'” Tracy said in the statement.

Luke and his manager, Chris Kappy, have also expressed interest in singing with Tracy. “We would be more than excited if the opportunity arose for Tracy and Luke to perform the song together,” Chris told Billboard in a 2023 interview.

The 2024 Grammy Awards take place Sunday at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air live on CBS and stream live on Paramount+.

Three teens shot, one fatally, in apparent targeted attack near their Chicago high school: Police

avid_creative/Getty Images

(CHICAGO) — One teenager was killed and two were injured in an apparent targeted shooting in broad daylight a few blocks from their Chicago school, according to police.

The three teens were walking Wednesday afternoon when a car pulled up, and several people got out and fired shots toward the victims, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference.

One teen was killed, one is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg, Snelling said.

“We do believe that the three individuals were targeted,” Snelling said.

The victims, all Nicholas Senn High School students, are ages 15 and 16, Snelling said.

“A loss of life is horrific under all circumstances, but it is especially harsh when our young people are targeted,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “We do everything in our power to keep our children safe. So this hurts, and I know our city is hurting.”

The mayor and police chief vowed to bring the shooters to justice.

“The individuals who are responsible for this kind of violence, it has to end,” Johnson said. “Whatever conflict, whatever pain you are expressing — this is not the way to do it. The loss of life is tearing at the fabric of this city.”

“We have to push back against this type of violence, this type of brazenness,” Snelling said. “We will hold violent criminals accountable — I can promise you that.”

Report: Luke Combs & Tracy Chapman to team up for Grammys performance

ABC

A few months ago, Luke Combs told ABC Audio that he had yet to meet or speak to Tracy Chapman, who originally wrote and recorded his crossover hit “Fast Car.” But if one report can be believed, that’s no longer true.

Sources tell Variety that Tracy and Luke will sing a duet version of “Fast Car” at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards. Luke has already been announced as a performer. According to Variety, Tracy has only been captured performing publicly three times since 2009. And while she’s issued a statement about the success of Luke’s cover, she hasn’t made any appearances as a result of the song’s resurgence.

In November, “Fast Car” won Tracy the Country Music Association Award for Song of the Year, making her the first Black woman ever to capture that title.

In 2023, Luke and his manager expressed interest in any opportunity that would allow him and Tracy to perform the song together.

The 2024 Grammy Awards air live Sunday on CBS and on Paramount+.
