Suspect arrested in violent mugging of 91-year-old man in New York City: Police

Darrin Klimek/Getty Images

(NEW YORK) — A suspect has been arrested in a violet mugging that left a 91-year-old man with multiple injuries, the New York Police Department confirmed on Monday.

Christian Torres, 45, was arrested in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City Sunday at approximately 10:15 a.m. and charged with attempted robbery, according to an NYPD spokesperson.

The attack took place in the Upper East Side neighborhood on Feb. 1 when 91-year-old Hyman Silverglad was walking on East 86th Street between First and Second Avenues around 10:30 a.m. local time, police said.

Police confirmed the suspect, believed to be Torres, pushed Silverglad to the ground and punched him while attempting to remove his wallet.

After the attack, Silverglad was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital Medical Center with multiple injuries. Torres allegedly fled the scene on foot.

In an interview with WABC in New York last week, Silverglad, and his son, James, recounted the brutal assault.

Silverglad said he was walking home from the grocery store when the assailant violently knocked him to the ground, punched him and tried to steal his wallet.

The retired attorney from Coney Island said he held onto his wallet until the suspect fled the scene.

Hyman Silverglad told WABC the fractures he sustained in the attack have left him “in agony.”

“[The suspect] threw me to the ground and I have suffered at least six fractures, very bad fractures,” he said. “I cannot walk, I’m in never-ending constant pain.”

Despite the injuries sustained, the 91-year-old maintained, “I had to fight for my life. Who wouldn’t put up a good fight?”

Judge in Trump’s Georgia election case to hear arguments on whether Willis, Wade must testify about misconduct allegations

Mint Images/Getty Images

(NEW YORK) — The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s Georgia election interference case will hear arguments Monday on whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and prosecutor Nathan Wade will have to testify during a hearing Thursday scheduled to examine allegations of misconduct against the two of them.

Wills and Wade, along with a number of employees in the DA’s office, have been subpoenaed to testify Thursday by Trump co-defendant Michael Roman, who last month filed a motion seeking to dismiss the election charges against him and disqualify Willis on the grounds that she allegedly engaged in a “personal, romantic relationship” with Wade, one of her top prosecutors in the election case, which allegedly resulted in financial gain for both of them.

A subsequent court filing from Willis admitted to the relationship but denied that there was any financial conflict of interest that would disqualify her from the case.

Roman then accused the DA of misrepresenting in that filing aspects of the relationship, including when it began.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee set a Feb. 15 hearing to hear evidence regarding the allegations of misconduct.

Willis’ office has asked the judge to quash the subpoenas to her, Wade, the DA’s office employees, and Wade’s business associate, calling the effort “harassment and disruption.” She has also asked the judge to cancel the upcoming evidentiary hearing altogether.

Willis argued there is “no factual basis” that “could reasonably justify requiring” her and a number of her employees to become witnesses in the case, and accused Roman of “an attempt to conduct discovery in a (rather belated) effort to support reckless accusations.”

“Harassment and disruption of this type should not be entertained,” the filing says.

Roman, however, says a business associate of Wade’s will “refute” claims made in Willis’s filing, and is ready to testify on Thursday. That individual, Terrance Bradley, has been subpoenaed by Roman. The DA’s office has asked the judge to quash that subpoena as well.

Wade also filed a motion seeking to quash a subpoena for his bank records, and a former DA’s office employee is also seeking to quash a subpoena issued to her.

Trump has joined in on the effort to disqualify Willis and dismiss his charges, accusing the DA of violating her office’s ethics obligations with statements she made at a church in the wake of the allegations.

Trump, Roman, and 17 others pleaded not guilty in August to all charges in a sweeping racketeering indictment for alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state of Georgia.

Four defendants in the case subsequently took plea deals in exchange for agreeing to testify against other defendants.

Swizz Beatz says fans are “talking about the wrong” thing amid Usher, Alicia Keys Super Bowl moment

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Usher‘s Super Bowl 58 halftime performance was jam-packed with memorable moments that had the internet talking.

Many called out the R&B crooner for the nearly 2 minutes he shared onstage with Alicia Keys when singing their 2004 hit, “My Boo,” since they say he might’ve been a bit too touchy with Keys, who’s married to producer Swizz Beatz

But Swizz is setting the record straight that he feels no way about the performance; he in fact thinks it was “nothing but amazing.”

“Y’all talking about the wrong damn thing!” Swizz wrote in his Instagram message, jokingly suggesting that the focus should be on Key’s red bejeweled body suit and extended cape that covered “the entire stadium.”

“Tonight’s performance was nothing but amazing with 2 amazing Giants! Congrats @usher and my love @aliciakeys that song is a classic,” the Grammy winner wrote.

“We don’t do negative vibes on this side we make history,” he added.

About four minutes into Usher’s 15-minute set, he joined Keys at her red piano and got close to her with his dance moves. He followed behind as she walked up and down the stage and at one point, put his hand on her hip. They ended with Usher hugging Keys from the back; they both smiled and laughed before the next segment kicked off with the help of Jermaine Durpri.

Among the comments that circulated were “Personally I ain’t letting this slide if I’m Swizz Beatz” and “It’s never the best idea to allow Usher, get anywhere near your Gal.”

Heartbreak inspires Nate Smith’s “Bulletproof”

Courtesy of Sony Music Nashville

Nate Smith has dropped a new breakup song, “Bulletproof.”

Ben JohnsonHunter Phelps and Ashley Gorley penned the track, and it’s one that Nate says he relates to even though he didn’t write it.

“I’ve tried to outrun the pain of a heartbreak in so many different ways. And I feel like the only thing that can really get you through it is time. And just doing that self-care, that self-healing, and stuff so,” says Nate. “That’s kinda what the song is about. Trying everything you can to outrun the pain of a heartbreak, but you can’t do it.”

“Bulletproof” will serve as the follow-up single to Nate’s latest #1 hits “World on Fire” and “Whiskey on You.” It’s also the first preview of his as-yet-untitled sophomore album.

Nate’s currently on his World on Fire Tour with upcoming stops in Los Angeles, Bakersfield and Sacramento, California, on February 15, 16 and 17, respectively.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin cancels overseas trip following hospitalization

pablohart/Getty Images

(NEW YORK) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has canceled a trip to Brussels this week following his hospitalization due to “an emergent bladder issue,” a U.S. defense official said Monday.

The Pentagon had announced last week that Austin would be traveling to Brussels to attend a monthly meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, the more than 50 countries providing military aid to Ukraine, and a separate meeting of NATO defense ministers.

News of Austin’s hospitalization on Sunday had raised questions as to whether Austin would be healthy enough to continue with that planned travel.

“The secretary will no longer travel to Brussels and Wednesday’s Ukraine Defense Contact Group will now be held virtually,” the U.S. defense official told ABC News.

Austin’s latest hospitalization on Sunday was made public shortly after his security detail took him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center seeking care for the new issue that appeared tied to his secret hospitalization in early January for complications resulting from a surgical procedure to treat his prostate cancer.

“At approximately 4:55 pm today, Secretary Austin transferred the functions and duties of the office of the Secretary of Defense to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks,” Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement, updating the public early Thursday evening. “The Deputy Secretary of Defense has assumed the functions and duties. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House, and Congress have been notified.”

Late Sunday night, Austin’s doctors at Walter Reed — Dr. John Maddox and Dr. Gregory Chesnut — said he had been admitted to the critical care unit.

“Earlier today, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue. Tonight, after a series of tests and evaluations, the Secretary was admitted into the critical care unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for supportive care and close monitoring,” their statement read.

“At this time, it is not clear how long Secretary Austin will remain hospitalized. The current bladder issue is not expected to change his anticipated full recovery. His cancer prognosis remains excellent. Updates on the Secretary’s condition will be provided as soon as possible,” their statement concluded.

The defense secretary previously underwent a minimally invasive surgical procedure for prostate cancer on Dec. 22, which led to a urinary tract infection and serious intestinal complications. He was hospitalized again on Jan. 1, but the White House didn’t learn of it for three days — secrecy that sparked intense scrutiny and criticism.

“I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis, and should also have told my team and the American public,” Austin told reporters earlier this month. “I take full responsibility. I apologize to my teammates and to the American people.”

Austin also spoke in personal terms about his health challenges.

“The news shook me, as I know that it shakes so many others, especially in the Black community. It was a gut punch,” he said then. “And frankly, my first instinct was to keep it private. I don’t think it’s news that I’m a pretty private guy. I never like burdening others with my problems. It’s just not my way.”

President Joe Biden has publicly faulted Austin for not informing him earlier of his hospitalization after his cancer procedure, telling reporters in January that he still had confidence in Austin but noted it was a lapse in judgment.

Austin has said he directly apologized to Biden and told him he was “deeply sorry” for not letting him know of his diagnosis immediately.

An internal review as well as an investigation by the Defense Department inspector general are ongoing.

Jon Stewart explains why he’s returning to ‘The Daily Show’

Michael Greenberg/CBS

Jon Stewart makes his grand return to The Daily Show on Monday night, and he’s revealed exactly why he decided to come back to his old desk on the Comedy Central series.

“Who better to comment on this election than someone who truly understands two aging men past their prime?” Stewart said on CBS Mornings.

While Stewart’s not setting out to have an influence on politics, he hopes his return to the show will bring about catharsis, a way to comment on things and a way to express them in a way that people enjoy.

“But as far as influence … just about everything that I had wanted to happen over the 16 years that I was at The Daily Show did not happen,” Stewart said. “I think I’ve learned that post-Daily Show.”

Stewart stepped away from The Daily Show anchor desk in 2015 after a hosting stint that began in 1999. In addition to hosting the series on Mondays through the 2024 election cycle, he’ll also serve as an executive producer.
