“Dune: Part Two” worms its way to #1 at the box office with $81.5 million opening weekend

Warner Bros.

Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune sequel scooped up an estimated $81.5 million in its North American domestic debut — the biggest opening weekend of the year and the largest since Taylor Swift‘s concert film The Eras Tour, which racked up $93 million.

Dune: Part Two — starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Austin Butler — added an estimated $97 million overseas, for a global haul of $178 million.

Bob Marley: One Love slipped to second place, earning an estimated $7.4 million. It’s three-week domestic tally now stands at $82.7 million in North America and $146 million globally.

Ordinary Angels, the faith-based film starring Hilary Swank, finished in third place, grabbing an estimated $3.8 million in its second week of release.

Finishing in fourth place was Madame Web, delivering an estimated $3.2 million, bringing its three-week North American total to $40 million and $50 million internationally.

Rounding out the top five was the faith-based historical drama TV series The Chosen Season 4, episodes 7 and 8, grossing an estimated $3.1 million domestically. That’s slightly behind episodes 4-6 and far below the $6 million opening of episodes 1-3, which collected a total of $14 million during its two-week run.

Travis Denning says “Going Places” offers a good overview of debut album

Courtesy of Mercury Nashville

Travis Denning‘s upcoming debut album, Roads That Go Nowhere, is set to offer a collective chronicle of his roots, life journey and where he’s headed. But if there’s one track that encapsulates it all, the singer says it’s “Going Places.”

“I think [‘Going Places’] is the most indicative piece of it. You know, I’ve tried to be as deliberate [with] all the songs I’ve recorded for it. This one feels like a better cornerstone than the other two songs [‘Things I’m Going Through’ and ‘Strawberry Wine and a Cheap Six Pack’],” Travis tells ABC Audio.

“I try to challenge myself sonically on this one and melodically and just do something different,” he says of the track, which he co-wrote with Paul DiGiovanni, Jeremy Stover and Matt Mulhare.

Travis loves and believes in “Going Places” so much that he’s got a hunch it’ll take his career to new heights.

“I don’t like to be the hype guy, but I mean, I feel very excited about this one. It just feels like it could be something,” shares Travis. “I don’t know, it feels good. And, you know, [we’re] trying to go places, so we’re doing it all.”

Roads That Go Nowhere drops May 24 and is available for preorder now.

Here’s the Roads That Go Nowhere track list:

“Why I’m Drinking”
“I Know How It Sounds
“Better At Leaving
“Strawberry Wine and a Cheap Six Pack”
“Going Places
“Someone That Isn’t Me”
“Southern Rock” (featuring HARDY)
“Love You Past That”
“Things I’m Going Through”
“Add Her To The List”
“Roads That Go Nowhere”
“The Sound of a Beer Getting Cracked” (featuring Josh Ross)
“Can’t Find One”

“Let’s make a deal”: Pop-Tarts wants Taylor Swift’s homemade toaster pastry recipe

Kirby Lee/Getty Images

Turns out fans weren’t the only people interested in hearing that Taylor Swift made homemade Pop-Tarts for her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his Kansas City Chiefs teammates. The company that makes the official toaster pastry took notice, too — and now they want Tay’s recipe.

The Pop-Tarts brand took out a full-page ad in The Kansas City Star‘s March 1 print edition. It read, “To KC’s most famous fan, we heard you have a Pop-Tarts pastry recipe. We’re tortured not knowing more about this DIY delight. What’s the filling? Does it have frosting? Do they have little holes? So let’s make a deal.”

The ad says Pop-Tarts is making a donation to a local food bank in Kansas City and will double it “if you share (your version) of our recipe with the masses. And this time we’ll make sure coach gets a bite. You in?”

That last line refers to Chiefs coach Andy Reid, while appearing on a podcast, noting that she didn’t give him one of the Pop-Tarts she’d made for the offensive linemen.

The ad also includes an illustration of a friendship bracelet that reads “Crazy Good.”

This isn’t the first time that Pop-Tarts has tried to gain attention with a Swift reference. In 2022, after she released Midnights, the brand posted a parody of the album’s cover with the caption, “FYI we’re around if you need a midnight snack (aka emotional support Pop-Tarts).”

The cover also listed song titles that had been changed to reference Pop-Tarts, like “Strawberry Glaze,” “Betoasted,” “Anti-Hunger” and “Snackster-Mind.”

Sum 41 explodes ‘Billboard’ chart record with “Landmines” single

Disney/Randy Holmes

Sum 41 is no longer “Still Waiting” for another #1 hit.

“Landmines,” the lead single off the “Fat Lip” outfit’s upcoming farewell album, Heaven :x: Hell, has reached the top of Billboard‘s Alternative Airplay, their second song to achieve that feat. In doing so, the Canadian rockers have also set a new Billboard record.

Sum 41’s first #1 on Alternative Airplay was “Fat Lip,” which conquered the chart way back in August 2001 — 22 years, five months and three weeks ago, to be exact. No other artist has waited that long in between number ones in the 36-year history of Alternative Airplay. The next closest is The Killers, who went a mere 13 years and sixth months between hitting #1 in 2006 with “When You Were Young” and in 2020 with “Caution.”

In breaking one Billboard record, Sum 41 also keeps blink-182 from setting another. The “All the Small Things” trio’s single “ONE MORE TIME” had spent the last 20 weeks at #1 on Alternative Airplay, tying Portugal. The Man‘s “Feel It Still” for the longest reign in the chart’s history. With “Landmines” grabbing pole position, “ONE MORE TIME” would now have to climb back up to #1 in order for blink to gain sole possession of the record.

Heaven :x: Hell, a 20-track double album, is due out March 29. Sum 41 is supporting the record on a final tour, which comes to the U.S. in April. They’ll play their last-ever show in January 2025 in Toronto.

In other chart news, Pearl Jam‘s new single “Dark Matter” has hit #1 on Billboard‘s Hot Hard Rock Songs tally, while Linkin Park‘s “Friendly Fire,” an unearthed song from the sessions for their 2017 One More Light album, takes the top spot on Rock & Alternative Airplay.

Abe Rasheed talks innovation at MNRK Music, cultivating new talent + working with DJ Drama

Abe Rasheed

When Abe Rasheed stepped in to head up the urban space at the legendary MNRK [Monarch] Music Group, his mission was to innovate, cultivate and help the label maintain its spot in today’s ever-changing musical landscape.

One of the ways he’s achieved his goals so far, he says, is by ramping up the R&B landscape and signing “real” soul artists who bring a much-needed voice to the hip-hop world.

“Rap can’t be nothing without R&B because they live in that same space,” Rasheed tells ABC Audio. “You need the melodies. You need the artists that are helping to transcend records.”

Rasheed believes that R&B stars of today — “the Daniel Caesars, the Giveons” — are appealing to younger audiences with their “more relatable” music, which is helpful in keeping the sound alive.

Frustrated with many of the rappers who were signed to the label and “hitting a wall with their growth,” Rasheed “felt like it was a need for us to have a breath of fresh air.”

In came Jaz Karis and Ivory Scott, who were part of Rasheed’s roster revamp.

But the SVP has also worked alongside a not-so-new hip-hop star, a legend, as many in music might refer to him — DJ Drama

While the Philadelphia native has seen many years of underground and mainstream success, Rasheed helped to release Drama’s Billboard-charting recent album, I’m Really Like That.

“It’s just been amazing just to even be in the same room as him,” Rasheed says of working with Drama.

The famed voice of mixtapes isn’t letting up either, Rasheed says, explaining that a new Drama album is underway featuring nothing but U.K. artists.

As for his plans for MNRK in the future: “Ideally, by this year, we’ll become a household name.”

11-year-old suffers possible shark bite off Honolulu, officials say

Gary Bell/Getty Images

(HONOLULU) — An 11-year-old girl suffered a possible shark bite off Honolulu, officials say.

Honolulu Ocean Safety, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services and the Honolulu Fire Department responded to a possible shark bite Saturday afternoon, Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department told ABC News.

“The 911 call came in just before 1:30 p.m. for an 11-year-old girl who may have suffered a shark bite to her left foot at [a] spot known as Rainbows in Ka’a’awa (across from the back gate to Kualoa Ranch),” Enright said in an email.

The child suffered non-life-threatening injuries and her parents declined EMS transport to an emergency room, she said.

“A witness described seeing what appeared to be a small reef shark in the area,” Enright said.

The report said the girl “was close to shore when this occurred,” Enright added.

Honolulu Ocean Safety was working to post warning signs in the area.

Teen shot outside Six Flags Over Georgia as gunfire erupts between police and ‘unruly crowd’: Officials

ABC News/WSB

(AUSTELL, Ga.) — Multiple suspects are being sought after a 15-year-old was shot when police exchanged gunfire with what they described as an “unruly crowd” of up to 600 people near the Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park in suburban Atlanta, authorities say.

The shooting erupted around 6:15 p.m. Saturday on a service road just off the 290-acre theme park’s property in Austell, about 17 miles northwest of Atlanta, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

Before the shooting, Cobb County police officers were called to the park by Six Flags Over Georgia security to help disperse “a sizeable unruly crowd” of 500 to 600 people “running through the park and fighting,” Cobb County police said in a statement to Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB-TV.

When police arrived, they were confronted by a large crowd leaving the park, which was celebrating its opening day of the season, according to authorities.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is leading an investigation into the shooting, said in a statement Sunday afternoon that preliminary information indicates Cobb County officers were responding to assist with crowd control near the park’s entrance “after several fights had taken place amongst patrons” leaving the park.

“At some point, multiple people began shooting, hitting an unoccupied CCPD marked patrol car,” according to the GBI statement. “As officers identified where the shots were coming from, they ran after people who had run into the woods. During the incident, one CCPD officer fired his weapon, hitting one minor.”

The wounded teenager was taken to Grady Hospital in Atlanta, where he was in critical condition on Sunday, according to the GBI. The teenager’s name was not released.

A handgun was recovered by police near where they located the wounded teenager, according to the GBI.

“It is incredibly disappointing that our community is disrupted at public events throughout the region by groups of underaged youth. Just like other venues in the area, we are committed to keeping this type of trouble outside our park and off our property,” Six Flags Over Georgia said in a statement.

The shooting occurred on the South Service Road, which is not owned or operated by Six Flags, theme park officials said.

“However, we join our community and the Atlanta region in our commitment to safety and security. We won’t put up with that type of activity here,” park officials said, adding that the park has “state-of-the-art security systems and metal detection.”

“Every guest is expected to follow our strict code of conduct and anyone unwilling to follow that code of conduct is unwelcome,” park officials added.
