Music notes: Harry Styles, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry and more

Harry Styles has been simultaneously leading Billboard‘s Hot 100, Artist 100 and the Billboard 200 for two straight weeks. He is the seventh artist in history to achieve the feat, but has a ways to go to beat Taylor Swift, who has the second-longest streak. She led all three charts for 10 weeks.

How well do you think Dua Lipa plays tennis? According to a new Evian commercial that sees her being taught by tennis pro Emma Raducanu, she shouldn’t quit her day job. Dua shared the hilarious commercial to her Instagram, where she fails to embrace her inner Serena Williams.

Ed Sheeran revealed why he names his albums after math symbols. He says it’s “to give the illusion that I’m good at maths.” He admitted on TikTok, “Fun fact I actually failed maths in school.”

Of course Katy Perry matches her shoes to her biggest songs. She told Footwear News that her rainbow Rizzo shoe matches her song “Firework,” while her jelly shoes make her think of “Teenage Dream.”

Carly Rae Jepsen announced her The So Nice tour, which kicks off September 24. Tickets go on sale June 10 at 10 a.m. local time via CarlyRaeMusic.com/tour, which also lists her tour dates.

Kelly Clarkson channeled George Michael on Tuesday by belting out his 1984 hit “Careless Whisper.” She had to make do without a saxophonist, though, so she gave her cover its own unique flair.

Jewel showed off how she packs for her tour and, spoilers, she cannot go without her treasure trove of hats.  She revealed it all on her TikTok, where she showed her car packed with numerous boxes of hats, which she names. She also shoved in a drum, plus a foam roller “for the physical therapies.”

Documentarian, Capitol Police officer to testify at 1st prime-time Jan. 6 hearing

J.Castro/Getty Images

(WASHINGTON) — New details are emerging about how the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol plans to begin presenting its findings to the American people this Thursday, June 9.

The prime-time hearing, kicking off at 8 p.m. EDT, will feature never-before-seen footage, including a dramatic 10-minute video, and witness testimony as lawmakers aim to explain what they say was a “coordinated, multi-step effort” to undermine democracy and overturn results of the 2020 presidential election.

It was revealed this week that the panel brought in a seasoned television executive, former ABC News President James Goldston, to help produce the hearing and capture public attention after nearly a year’s worth of work conducted behind the scenes, a development first reported by Axios and confirmed to ABC News by congressional sources. Goldston, who left ABC News last year, started working with the committee several weeks ago.

One of the witnesses planned for Thursday’s hearing is documentary filmmaker Nick Quested, who was embedded with the extremist far-right group the Proud Boys during the assault on the Capitol, ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl reported.

The hearing will be the first time Quested shares his story publicly. Lawmakers are also expected to air material captured by Quested and his crew. While his documentary has not been released, some of his footage has been used in a Department of Justice case related to Jan. 6.

Earlier this week, Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio and four other members were indicted on seditious conspiracy charges. They all were previously indicted on less serious conspiracy charges related to their involvement in what transpired on Jan. 6. All previously pleaded not guilty and there is a hearing scheduled in their case for later this week.

Another expected witness is Capitol Police officer Caroline Edwards, who suffered a head injury in the attack. She told ABC News last October that she was still struggling months after the incident.

“You kind of have this, this guilt of like, ‘Am I, am I making this up?’ — because I can’t tell you know I can’t show in a tangible way that I’m injured, but you know I really have to tell people I’m not feeling good today,” Edwards said.

The Jan. 6 committee’s presentation will be the culmination of more than 11 months of work including more than 1,000 interviews and over 140,000 documents.

The panel — including seven Democrats and two Republicans — has talked to Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner as they investigate former President Donald Trump’s role in efforts to subvert the election outcome. Trump has consistently attacked the panel, calling it the “Unselect Committee.”

Committee members have also interviewed former Attorney General Bill Barr; former national security adviser Michael Fynn; Trump’s former personal assistant Nick Luna; former aide to Mark Meadows, Cassidy Hutchinson; and Stephanie Grisham, the former White House press secretary and chief of staff to Melania Trump.

Most major news networks are expected to carry Thursday’s hearing live in their prime-time slot, with the exception of Fox News.

The conservative outlet announced Tuesday that their prime-time programs will cover the hearings “as news warrants.” At 11 p.m. EDT, “Fox News @ Night” anchor Shannon Bream will host a two-hour live special analyzing the hearings.

Instead, Fox Business will be covering the hearings live, with Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum as anchors. Local Fox affiliates around the country, the Fox website and Fox Nation app will also be able to air the Fox Business feed.

The Jan. 6 committee’s second hearing is slated for June 13 at 10:00 a.m. The dates of the other hearings have not been released.

The committee has set a fall deadline to share its complete findings, a release that would coincide with the 2022 midterm elections.

The committee can refer cases for prosecution, but only the Justice Department can decide whether to file any charges.

Texas suspends inmate transports after escape allegedly killed 5 people

Oliver Helbig/Getty Images

(HOUSTON) —  Texas prison officials have suspended inmate transports after a convicted murderer allegedly killed a man and his four grandchildren after escaping from custody.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, escaped a prison bus after stabbing the driver in the hand and chest on May 12. Lopez was serving a life sentence for capital murder in Hidalgo County and an attempted capital murder in Webb County.

“TDCJ has temporarily suspended the transport of inmates as the agency conducts a comprehensive review of its transportation procedures. If it becomes necessary to do a transport such as releasing or an emergency medical appointment, additional security measures will be implemented,” the TDCJ wrote in a statement to ABC News Houston station KTRK. “The agency is conducting an internal Serious Incident Review and also intends to bring in an outside firm to conduct an independent review to identify factors that may have lad to the escape of (Gonzalo) Lopez.”

State Sen. John Whitmire, chair of the Texas Senate’s Criminal Justice Committee, said the Texas Department of Justice should suspend transports until safeguards are in place.

Whitmire is calling for the requirement of three armed correctional officers on a bus that carries violent offenders with a trailing vehicle behind.

Currently, the state only requires two officers on the bus and there are no requirements for a car following the transport.

“While the investigation continues into exactly what happened with the recent escape and tragic murder of 5 members of the Collins family, we must act swiftly to ensure no other Texan is in danger of losing their life or being harmed by an escaped inmate being transported on Texas roads,” Whitmire said in a statement prior to the decision to suspend transports.

Lopez escaped from a prison bus on May 12 after breaking out of a cage structure and stabbing the driver. Lopez was being transported from Gatesville to Huntsville for a medical appointment.

Lopez, the driver and a second officer all exited the bus before Lopez got back in and drove away in the vehicle.

Lopez remained on the run until June 2, when he is believed to have murdered five other people before being shot and killed by authorities in a shootout.

Officials allege Lopez entered Mark Collins’ home in Leon County and murdered Collins and his four grandchildren, whose ages range from 11 to 18.

Authorities have alleged that Lopez stole clothes, firearms and a 1999 white Chevrolet Silverado from the residence.

The victims were seen on the morning of June 2 and found murdered that evening around 6 p.m., according to authorities.

Deputies from the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspected stolen vehicle later that night and followed it until officials were able to lay out spike strips that flattened the truck’s four tires in Jourdanton, almost 250 miles from Leon County.

According to authorities, Lopez fired the first shots with a rifle aimed out of the truck’s window. The deputies returned fire, killing Lopez.

Prior to the shootout, Lopez was added to Texas’ 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List and officials issued a $50,000 reward for his capture.

Queen members reveal an archival track featuring the late Freddie Mercury is due out in September

On Saturday, Queen + Adam Lambert rocked the crowds in front of Buckingham Palace to kick off the star-studded Party at the Palace concert celebrating Queen Elizabeth II‘s 70 years on the throne.

Shortly before the event, Queen drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May shared an exciting tidbit of news during a BBC Radio 2 interview, revealing that a previously unheard track by the band featuring late frontman Freddie Mercury is scheduled to be released in September.

“We did find a little gem from Freddie that we’d kind of forgotten about,” Taylor told BBC host Zoe Ball. “And it’s wonderful. Actually, it was a real discovery.”

Taylor also revealed that the track came from the sessions for Queen’s 1989 album The Miracle, which was the next-to-last record Mercury made with the band before his death from AIDS in 1991.

“It was kind of hiding in plain sight,” May told Ball. “We looked at it many times and thought, ‘Well, no, we can’t really rescue that.’ But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, ‘OK, we can do this and this.'”

He added, “It’s like stitching bits together. But it’s beautiful. It’s a very touching piece from Freddie.”

Taylor concurred, calling the track a “very passionate piece [that] turned out beautifully.”

According to Deadline, the title of the track is “Face It Alone.”

Queen + Adam Lambert recently launched a 2022 European leg of their Rhapsody Tour, which continues Wednesday, June 8, with one of a series of shows that the band is playing at London’s O2 arena.

After months of speculation, Variety is reporting that Ozark star Julia Garner — who most recently earned raves for playing the title role in Netflix’s Inventing Anna — has officially been offered the role of Madonna in the Queen of Pop’s forthcoming biopic.

Variety quotes sources familiar with the project as saying that there were more than a dozen candidates for the role, but Garner has emerged as the favorite. It’s been rumored for months that Garner would land the role in the movie, which Madonna is co-writing and directing. A source tells Variety that Garner’s team is “considering” the offer, but is expected to accept.

The rest of the cast for the movie, which will follow Madonna’s early days, has yet to be determined and the production timeline is currently unknown. In the initial announcement of the project, Madonna said, “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive.”

‘Blade’ reboot with Mahershala Ali reportedly getting underway July 4

Marvel Studios

You can bet two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is already sharpening his fangs: While Marvel Studios is mum so far, the industry job listing site called Production List says his Blade reboot will get underway July 4.

The Atlanta and New Orleans-shot production will see Ali playing the fan favorite half-human, half-vampire vampire hunter, taking over the role Wesley Snipes brought to the big screen in 1998. The modestly budgeted film is credited with kick-starting the superhero craze, which continues to this day.

Snipes’ film spawned a pair of sequels: Blade 2 in 2002, starring The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus and directed by eventual Oscar winner Guerlmo del Toro, and 2004’s Blade Trinity, which also starred Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced Ali would be rebooting the role back in 2019; the acclaimed actor made an in-character voice-over cameo in the after credits for Eternals in 2021.

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.

Watch Jack White shred custom Fender guitar that will make Tom Morello “jealous”

Scott Kowalchyk/CBS via Getty Images

If you’ve caught Jack White on his ongoing Supply Chain Issues Tour, you may have seen him try out his new custom Fender Jazzmaster guitar. In a new Instagram post, the White Stripes/Raconteurs/Dead Weather rocker shared a video of the guitar in action.

“Can anybody tell me what’s happening with this guitar?” White asks after 10 seconds of shredding.

The folks over at Guitar World have an answer, having recently interviewed White about the instrument. Essentially, it includes a pitch-shifting pedal built into the body of the guitar.

As White tells Guitar World, he was partly inspired by one of Muse frontman Matt Bellamy‘s signature guitars, which similarly has an effects sampler built into it. White’s also hoping that his custom Jazzmaster will catch the attention of another iconic shredder.

“I think Tom Morello may end up getting jealous of this and have to put it on his guitar, too,” White says. “I’ll have to send him a clip of it and see what he thinks.”

White’s tour continues Tuesday in Vancouver.

“He’s in great spirits”: Young Thug’s ex-girlfriend provides update on jailed rapper

Prince Williams/Wireimage

Young Thug remains behind bars in an Atlanta jail after a Fulton County judge denied a bond request for the YSL rapper. His former girlfriend and ex-fiance, Jerrika Karlae, shared details of a recent conversation she had with the rapper, and provided an update on his well-being and mental status.

“He’s doing good, actually, and he’s in great spirits,” she said in an appearance on The Progress Report podcast on Monday. “I feel like this is just a moment for him to learn a lot of lessons.”

Karlae said of the rapper, “I see the growth.” She also opened up about noticing his attention to his faith.

“I feel like I really see his faith. I really really do,” she said. “That’s what a lot of people don’t know. Bro, that man really knows the Bible inside and out. Nobody would know that about him because they don’t talk about that … They talk about everything else.”

Karlae reacted in shock to Young Thug’s positive mindset and optimism about his current legal situation.

“Honestly, he was giving me advice,” she said before adding, “He was like, ‘Keep your head in the game, wake up every day and put a smile on your face and be thankful, and we good.'”

Karlae says Young Thug sends a message to the music industry: “‘I love my fans,'” she says he told her.

As a result of his arrest on May 10 due to RICO charges, among others, Young Thug is expected to stay behind bars until January 9, 2023, his anticipated trial date.
