Nirvana will be among the recipients of the 2023 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The accolade recognizes “performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.”
Other 2023 Lifetime Achievement honorees include Heart‘s Ann and Nancy Wilson, The Supremes, Nile Rodgers, blues pioneer Ma Rainey, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” artist Bobby McFerrin and rapper Slick Rick.
The Lifetime Achievement Award will be handed out during the Recording Academy’s 2023 Special Merit Awards Ceremony, taking place on February 4 ahead of the 2023 Grammys on February 5.
Nirvana has won just one Grammy previously — the band’s MTV Unplugged album took home Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 ceremony, two years after Kurt Cobain‘s death in 1994. In 2017, Nirvana’s iconic single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
