The sequel to the 1984 rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap will feature appearances by several rock stars, including Paul McCartney and Elton John. And the film’s director, Rob Reiner, has nothing but praise for their comedic talents.

“They were all great. Paul McCartney is really funny. I mean, really funny,” Reiner tells Entertainment Weekly. “And Elton was spot on. He knew exactly what he wanted to say, and either you can do it or you can’t do it.”

He adds, “But these guys are used to being asked questions. They’ve been asked a million questions over their careers by reporters, and so they were totally comfortable, and you’ll see what they say. It is good.”

Reiner says McCartney’s storyline comes out of a real experience where the guys in Spinal Tap were rehearsing for a tour, and McCartney was in another studio rehearsing for his tour and “dropped in on them.”

“He came in and said, ‘Hey fellas, sing us a song.’ And they wound up singing the worst version of ‘Start Me Up’ that ever lived,” Reiner tells the mag.

In the movie, McCartney pops in when Spinal Tap is rehearsing a song.

“McCartney comes, he listens, and then he gives a suggestion of what to do, how to fix it,” Reiner says. “And then they get into singing together. … And then that one is in the album.”

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues opens in theaters Sept. 12. In addition to McCartney and John, it will feature cameos by Garth Brooks, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich.

Daniel Caesar announces new album

Daniel Caesar has a new album on the way. In his “profound and clever” attempt at announcing the news, he wrote a letter in which he opened up about the stories his father, a Jamaican musician, told him when he was disappointed in him or simply trying to get a message across.

Among those was a warning “of the dangers this world had to offer, seeming pleasant but sometimes fleeting” and the encouragement to center God in his life.

Daniel admits he wasn’t always interested in his father’s stories and life lessons, which have now become a guide in his life. He says he’s also come to realize that everything is cliche, noting, “No one will ever think a thought that hasn’t been thought before, nor will anyone try a thing that hasn’t been tried before.”

Daniel adds he has since leaned into family, honesty and faith, writing, “Never forget that God is the only eternal measuring stick for morality. I am nothing. But in my flesh, I am Spergy’s son, and in my spirit, I am God’s.”

The caption to Daniel’s post reads “Spergy of Son,” which is seemingly the name of his upcoming album.

It’s also the name of his website, where he posted a video of him walking into a body of water. Title cards reading “WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT” and “HAVE A BABY (WITH ME)” are interspersed, and a snippet of a new song soundtracks the video.

Daniel’s last album was 2023’s Never Enough.

Billy Joel is ‘not a big fan’ of The Beatles’ ‘White Album’

Billy Joel has shared his thoughts on The Beatles’ 1968 self-titled ninth studio album, commonly referred to as the White Album, and they aren’t positive.

During his appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Joel and Maher were discussing classic double albums when Maher mentioned The Beatles’ record.

“I’m not a big fan of the White Album, but some people love it,” Joel said. “I hear it as a collection of half-a**** songs they didn’t finish writing because they were too stoned, or they didn’t care anymore.”

He adds, “I think they had fragments and they put them on the album.”

Joel also suggested that John Lennon “was disassociated” during the recording of the record, and Paul McCartney was “carrying the weight.”

While The Beatles officially broke up in 1970, Joel said he has a theory that the Fab Four “almost broke up a couple of times, just like a marriage.” He added, “They had their ups and downs and sometimes they were more prolific and sometimes they weren’t and I hear that in some of those things.”

Lainey Wilson just can’t stay away from her new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

She was there with her parents to preview the Tough as Nails display before it opened on July 18, but by the weekend, she was back. Lainey stopped by the Ford Theater, where Jon Decious and Aaron Raitiere were holding a special Songwriter Session as a tie-in with the exhibit.

Lainey surprised the crowd by performing her hit “4x4xU” and the Whirlwind track “Ring Finger” with her friends, who co-wrote both tunes.

Jon and Aaron have also written songs together for Miranda Lambert and Ashley McBryde.

Lainey Wilson: Tough as Nails runs through June 2026.

Epitaph

Thrice has announced a new album called Horizons/West.

The record is due out Oct. 3. It’s described as a companion to Thrice’s 2021 effort, the similarly titled Horizons/East.

“This is the first time we leaned into something that felt like a direct continuation, like a sequel to a previous album,” says frontman Dustin Kensrue.

He continues, “A lot of this record is about parsing reality. We’re constantly being influenced by algorithms, by fear, by our own social echo chambers. Horizons/West tries to pull the curtain back on some of that.”

The first single off Horizons/West is called “Gnash” and is out now.

Thrice will launch a U.S. tour in October.

Here’s the Horizons/West track list:
“Blackout”
“Gnash”
“Albatross”
“Undertow”
“Holding On”
“Dusk”
“The Dark Glow”
“Crooked Shadows”
“Distant Suns”
“Vesper Light”
“Unitive/West”

While fans are holding out hope that one day they’ll see Taylor Swift release a behind-the-scenes documentary of the Eras Tour, one production company has beat her to it — sort of.

Deadline reports that the two-part documentary series, with the working title Taylor, will air on the U.K.’s Channel 4. It’ll include interviews with industry insiders, fans and “high-profile commentators,” and focus on how Taylor became a “global phenomenon,” charting her rise from teen star to cultural icon.

Deadline also reports the documentary will follow the Eras Tour and Taylor’s revealing Miss Americana Netflix doc. The publication quotes director Guy King as saying, “Taylor Swift is an unprecedentedly powerful 21st century voice for women and young people. Under the microscope of social media since the earliest days of MySpace and Tumblr, she came of age during a new feminist wave.”

“With her fame came controversy, which she so skillfully wrestled to the floor. We’re excited to tell her story.”

No word on when the doc will air, or whether it’ll come to the U.S.
