On This Day, March 23, 1983…

ZZ Top released their eighth studio album, Eliminator, which went on to be the band’s most commercially successful album, peaking at #9 on the Billboard Album chart.

The album, which used more synthesizers and drum machines than previous ZZ Top records, featured four hit singles: “Legs,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharped Dressed Man” and “TV Dinners.”

The success those songs — and the album — were helped by their popular accompanying music videos. They were in regular rotation on MTV, helping to attract a younger fan base.

Eliminator was the first of the band’s albums to become a worldwide success and went on to sell over 11 million copies in the U.S. It has been certified Diamond by the RIAA.

The ARMY was ready for new BTS.

ARIRANG, the new album from the K-pop superstars, broke streaming records on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon when it was released on Friday. On Spotify, it was this year’s most-streamed album in a single day. On Apple, it set a new record for biggest pop album by a group, based on first-day streams.

On Amazon Music, it was the biggest first-day debut for a K-pop album.

On Saturday, BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE, the group’s first full concert since 2022, streamed on Netflix live from Seoul, South Korea. In front of some 100,000 fans, BTS performed 12 songs, including multiple tracks from ARIRANG, and hits like “Butter” and “Dynamite.” RM, who recently injured his ankle, had to sit on a stool while the rest of the group performed their signature choreography.

While onstage, SUGA told the crowd, “With this album, we wanted to show you the most honest side of the seven of us. We worked hard to show a more mature and evolved BTS, and I’m so happy to finally present it to you.” You can watch highlights on Tudum.com.

BTS will be in New York on Monday for a Spotify event for the group’s top listeners, followed by a two-night stint on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Netflix will premiere BTS: THE RETURN, a documentary about the making of ARIRANG.

April 9 marks the kickoff of BTS’ world tour. Two of the first few concerts will be streamed live in movie theaters to give fans a taste of what they can expect from the trek, which is set to continue into 2027.

Parkway Drive has issued a statement regarding “someone we’ve been associated with” who has pleaded guilty to an underage sex offense dating back to 2002.

“This is appalling and we condemn it,” Parkway Drive writes in an Instagram post. “We’re gutted and we support the victim.”

The group continues, “This happened before we were a band, however we bear moral responsibility for contracting him from 2003, on and off over the years.”

The statement does not use anyone’s name.

“While he hasn’t toured with us since 2017, more recently he’s been part of our Australian online mech team,” Parkway Drive writes. “When the band heard about this, we terminated his contract immediately. He’s no longer involved with Parkway Drive in any capacity.”

“This is heartbreaking on a very human scale,” the post concludes. “This is still ongoing in the courts so we’re closing comments.”

Bruce Springsteen is joining the American Civil Liberties Union’s fight against Donald Trump’s attempt to do away with birthright citizenship.

The rocker has lent his iconic tune “Born in the U.S.A.” to a new 30-second ad that debuted ahead of Supreme Court hearing arguments in a case challenging Trump’s executive order attempting to alter the 14th Amendment, which grants anyone born in the U.S. to citizenship.

“We’re reminding President Trump what it means to be born in the U.S.A.,” reads the ad’s description. “We’re honored that the one and only Bruce Springsteen trusted us with use of his iconic anthem ahead of our landmark Supreme Court case Trump v. Barbara, where we’re challenging President Trump’s attempt to overturn birthright citizenship. The 14th Amendment speaks for itself.”

“Born in the U.S.A.” is the perfect song to capture what’s at stake in this Supreme Court case and how birthright citizenship is integral to America,” Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU, tells Rolling Stone. “It’s a song that tells the story of a Vietnam veteran returning home to an America he knew was neglecting its people. The song calls on our nation to live up to its ideals.”

He adds, “Decades later, the song still reflects the struggle to hold onto the things that make us proud to be Americans today,” noting, “Even if you put the lyrics aside, the song basically makes you feel good. It makes you feel proud. It makes you feel bold. And that’s what our ad campaign captures.”

“Birthright citizenship is what makes America great, and we ought to be proud to defend it,” he continues. “It’s a reminder that we all have a role to play in fighting for a nation that follows our democratic principles.”

It “Ain’t a Bad Life” when you have two songs in country’s top 15. Just ask Jordan Davis.

At #12 is his third single from Learn the Hard Way.

“‘Turn This Truck Around’ is one that — I wanted to do it because I felt like it was different,” he tells ABC Audio. “I felt it was something we’ve never released.”

The other is his pal Thomas Rhett’s “Ain’t a Bad Life,” from the deluxe edition of his About a Woman collection.

“Me and Thomas have always talked about doing a song together and this song was perfect for it,” Jordan says. “He played it for me, and I finally pestered him enough to where he allowed me to sing on it.”

“But now they’re both doing great, so it’s really cool to have two songs out working, but man the one with Thomas is special,” he adds.

“Ain’t a Bad Life” is currently at #4 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

Fly the W once more: Weezer is teasing new music.

Rivers Cuomo and company have shared a video on Instagram showing four different symbols drawn on a piece of paper. The clip begins with the famous “Buddy Holly” guitar lick before transitioning into what sounds like a new song in which Cuomo sings, “Shine again.”

You may recall a Weezer post published in February that promised, “Weezer will shine again soon.”

The video ends with Thursday’s date, March 26, appearing on the screen. In its caption, Weezer simply writes, “JOIN US!” along with a link to the band’s website.

Weezer last put out an album in 2021, when they released two records: OK Human and Van Weezer. They also put out four EPs in 2022 as part of their SZNZ project.

While we wait for possibly new Weezer, a past Weezer song is currently having a resurgence. “Go Away,” which originally appeared on the 2015 album Everything Will Be Alright in the End, has entered the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart amid going viral on TikTok.

The Black Crowes have released a lot of music over their almost 40-year career, but frontman Chris Robinson believes their iconic ballad “She Talks To Angels” is the one song of theirs that will stand the test of time.

In a new interview with New York Magazine’s Vulture column, Robinson says one reason is because “[t]hat’s the song really in people’s imagination,” adding it’s a “very inviting song.”

“I wrote that song from a dark romantic perspective as a kid who was yet to really be in the world that much,” he says, adding that when he wrote it he hadn’t yet experienced some of themes the song deals with, like addiction.

“The reason I say that song might resonate longer than any other is because I meet people all the time who say ‘She Talks to Angels’ means so much to them — whether they knew someone like that or have been through something similar personally,” Robinson says. “People share their stories with me about the song a lot, and I always find it to be really poignant and touching.”

“If you’re a songwriter, that’s what you’re shooting for, that soulful connection. It has to exist on some other levels besides just having a nice melody,” he adds. “I mean, when we play the song, we’ll still see people crying. To me, that’s what the song is for.”

“She Talks To Angels” appears on The Black Crowes’ debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, which was released in 1990.

The Black Crowes just released their 10th studio album, A Pound of Feathers. They launch a U.S. tour May 17 in Austin, Texas. A complete list of dates can be found at TheBlackCrowes.com.

Don Cheadle has joined the team for the docuseries Vs. Goliath. Deadline reports he’s been tapped to executive produce the show with nonprofit The Solutions Project, which promotes climate justice.

The series, according to Deadline, “explores stories of everyday people from working-class communities across the U.S. taking bold action against the fossil fuel industry.”

“The climate crisis is not just about science,” Cheadle said in a statement. “It’s about justice, courage, and the people rising up to do what’s needed. Vs. Goliath spotlights communities that are being directly hurt by fossil fuel pollution, and refuse to be invisible. The series makes these communities the heroes of the battle, and stays loyal to participant-driven storytelling. I’m honored to help amplify those voices.”

“We created Vs. Goliath to spotlight the heroes of the environmental justice movement – everyday people standing up to enormous odds,” the production team added. “Having Don Cheadle join us as executive producer, with the incredible support of The Solutions Project, not only validates the urgency of this work, but also brings powerful visibility to the people and stories featured in the series.”

How Harry Styles’ ‘Sign of the Times’ made it into ‘Project Hail Mary’

In the new Ryan Gosling movie Project Hail Mary, the character of Eva Stratt, played by Sandra Hüller, performs a karaoke version of Harry Styles’ debut solo hit, “Sign of the Times.” How did that particular song end up in the movie and its soundtrack? Turns out it was Sandra Hüller’s idea.

In the movie, Sandra’s character sings the song while bidding farewell to her team. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the German actress, who was Oscar-nominated for her role in 2023’s Anatomy of a Fall, explains, “It came from a playlist [of] goodbye songs. So I was looking for something that was, like, a final goodbye to someone — that was the first thing.”

“And then, it was a coincidence, actually, that it was also about space, and going to the sky and all these things,” she adds. “And then I thought, ‘Wow, I didn’t know.’ I know that song, but I never made this connection in my head. … And also, when you sing it, it’s very moving, especially in the last part, where it goes, like, really big.”

“I realized in that moment when I listened to it, like, really, really closely, that it could be for us,” she continues.

She also shared with EW that she ran the idea by her daughter: “I asked my daughter if it’s actually cool or if it’s just me who finds it cool at almost 48 [years old]. And she approved.”

In the song, Harry sings, “You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky” and “Just stop your crying, have the time of your life/ breaking through the atmosphere.” In 2017, he told Rolling Stone that the song is written from the point of view of a mother who is dying while giving birth.
