Tate McRae is having a moment: After headlining Lollapalooza and Canada’s Osheaga festival in a single weekend, and going viral for dipping herself in gold paint at the end of her performances, she’s been honored with a special award.
At Variety‘s Power of Young Hollywood event on Wednesday, Tate was given the Triple Threat Award, honoring her achievements as a singer, songwriter and performer. Accepting her award, Tate said, “I’ve realized that I’m incapable of doing anything casually in my life.”
She then described how ballet lessons led her to a professional dance career, while an interest in poetry led her to become a songwriter, which then led her to her current status as a global pop star.
“So, I guess I have a slight problem with doing the most at all times,” she continued, laughing. “It’s not like I was soaking in gold paint two days ago or anything.”
“But honestly, I think that obsession has always been the thing that drives me,” she continued. “When I love something, I really love it. I wanna know everything about it. I wanna get better at it. And I pretty much let it consume my entire life.”
“Dance was my first love, writing became the way I understood myself, and music somehow gave me a place where I could put it all together. The fact that I get to do all three for my actual job is a dream come true, so thank you.”
Tate was given her award by Madison Beer at the event, which also featured Sombr receiving the Songwriter of the Year award from Fleetwood Mac guitar legend Lindsey Buckingham. Plus, Sienna Spiro performed her song “Pure” live.
