(NEW YORK) — Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden gave a much-needed morale boost to John Hao, a 20-year-old Michigan State student who was paralyzed from the chest down after the deadly shooting on campus earlier this month.
After Harden read about Hao, who is a huge fan, he knew he wanted to help.
The star point guard surprised Hao, who is getting care in the hospital, with a FaceTime call.
“Everything will work itself out. Be strong. You’re alright, you’ll be alright. I promise you are,” Harden told Hao. “I got you. I love when you’re smiling too … I’m with you.”
“I know it’s tough right now but you gotta stay physically strong you know what I mean? You just gotta just think positive things and keep pushing and keep fighting. I got you,” Harden went on.
He then had another surprise for Hao.
“I got some gifts for you too,” Harden said. “I got some things coming your way [to] hopefully give you some encouragement, make you smile.”
Harden sent Hao sneakers, including one pair that was worn in a game.
Harden also contributed to Hao’s GoFundMe page, which was set up to help pay his medical bills, which total $366,000.
“Let me know if you need anything else, I got you,” Harden said at the end of their call, giving Hao his personal cellphone number.
Harden told ESPN that he wanted to brighten Hao’s day even if it was just for one minute.
He also spoke to reporters about the interaction after the 76ers won on Thursday night.
“There’s things like that, where you sit back and think about just real life and things bigger than basketball,” Harden said. “I heard that he was a fan of mine, so I wanted to get up on that ASAP and just see what I could do, anything I could do.”

(NEW YORK) — Alex Morgan is a superstar soccer player and now a history-making mom on the field too.
In Wednesday night’s final of the SheBelieves Cup, Morgan scored her 14th goal for the U.S. Women’s National Team since giving birth to her daughter Charlie nearly three years ago.
The goal makes Morgan the highest scoring mom in USWNT history, the team confirmed on Twitter.
Morgan’s goal Wednesday night also helped lead the USWNT to a 2-1 victory over Brazil, giving them their fourth straight SheBelieves Cup title.
Morgan is one of three mothers on the current USWNT roster, joining Crystal Dunn and Adrianna Franch.
Morgan’s daughter Charlie, who will turn 3 in May, watched her mom compete against Brazil on Wednesday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, and joined her on the field after to celebrate the win.
Charlie has grown up on the soccer field, traveling with her mom to games and tournaments across the country.
Morgan scored her first goal for the USWNT as a mom in February 2021, less than one year after she gave birth.
The San Diego Wave star has scored 120 goals and counting for the USWNT over the course of her career.

(SALT LAKE CITY) — Team Giannis bested Team LeBron 184-175 to win Sunday night’s NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Boston Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum led Team Giannis with 55 points, setting the record for the most points scored in an All-Star Game. The previous record holder was power forward Anthony Davis, who scored 52 points in 2017.
Tatum, 24, was crowned the MVP of the night for his record-breaking performance.

(NEW YORK) — Basketball Hall of Famer Paul Pierce has come to a settlement after he touted EMAX tokens, crypto asset securities offered and sold by EthereumMax, on social media without disclosing the payment he received for the promotion, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Friday.
“Pierce did not disclose that he was being compensated by the entity offering and selling the security for giving the crypto asset security publicity,” the SEC order said.
Pierce also made false and misleading promotional statements, the SEC said.
Pierce, 45, agreed to settle the charges and pay $1.4 million in penalties, disgorgement and interest.
“This case is yet another reminder to celebrities: The law requires you to disclose to the public from whom and how much you are getting paid to promote investment in securities, and you can’t lie to investors when you tout a security,” said SEC Chair Gary Gensler. “When celebrities endorse investment opportunities, including crypto asset securities, investors should be careful to research if the investments are right for them, and they should know why celebrities are making those endorsements.”
Pierce failed to disclose he was paid more than $244,000 worth of EMAX tokens to promote them on Twitter, according to the SEC’s order. Pierce also tweeted misleading statements related to EMAX, including a screenshot of an account showing large holdings and profits without disclosing that his own personal holdings were in fact much lower than those in the screenshot.
“Despite the claim in this Tweet that he ‘made more money with this crypto in the past month then [sic] [he] did with [ESPN] in a year[,]’ Pierce was at least negligent in not knowing that this statement was materially misleading. Pierce, whose gross compensation from ESPN was over $1 million the prior year, only received EMAX tokens two days prior to the post, the value of which was approximately $46,000 at the time he was paid,” the SEC order said.
Pierce, who worked as a commentator, was let go by ESPN in 2021 after posting offensive photos from a poker game.
The shooting guard played 19 seasons in the NBA, including 15 with the Boston Celtics, where he won a title in 2008. He made 10 All-Star Games and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
He’s just the latest in a number of prominent celebrities to end up paying huge fines for promoting crypto on social media without disclosing their personal interest in the brands. Kim Kardashian settled with the SEC for $1.26 million for promoting EMAX tokens in October 2022.
